Rooms to fit family of 5

In October, we're staying at the Wilderness Lodge and have a bunkbed room. I'm also laying out plans for our 2009 trip. Our children will be 6, 4, and almost 2 for that trip. I'm curious about what others have experienced when deciding on hotels as a family of 5. I know that POFQ has trundle beds or there are also daybeds at the deluxe resorts. But we all know how a family can take over a hotel room, so I'm not sure how realistic those two options are. Looking for any insight on trundles, daybeds, suites, and cabin options. Thanks!

If the 3rd child is UNDER the age of 3, you can use ANY Disney resort room, as they assume the child sleeps in a crib.

Once they turn 3, your choices are:

2 rooms at any resort
All-Star Music Family Suites
Port Orleans Riverside w Trundle
Ft Wilderness Cabins
Deluxe room/Junior Suite at WL/AKL
Other deluxes other than WL/AKL can have daybeds
I believe the new AKL Villas will have some rooms that sleep 5.

I have never been with 5, but I have read reports that the POFQ with trundle are just adequate, whereas the deluxe with day beds can comfortably accomodate 5 adults. There are also the cabins at FW that had PLENTY of room.

But since your youngest will not yet be three, you can do nearly any resort with a crib. I would recommend at least a mod in that case, however.

The standard Contemp. rooms w/2 queens plus the couch that folds down into a twin size would work. Most Boardwalk rooms also have a shorter (crib-mattress sized) daybed. We have stayed at both and they worked well for our younger kids.

We had a deluxe room at AKL which was the Queen (nice) and the bunks plus a sofa that flipped into a twin. The room was very large... plenty of room for all the "stuff" that comes with a family of 5. I think you can find the same room setup at WL as well. We'd take these rooms again in a heartbeat!

I'm 5'4" and I have slept on the daybeds in the deluxes with no problem at all. Under 2 can stay in any room in a crib so you don't have to worry about it just yet.

I love the cabins.....who knew? We are a family of 5 and we have stayed at the POLY and Contemporary and had more than enough room but I think the cabins are best. IMHO you can't beat the full size kitchen and the ability to prepare a good breakfast in your "room". It doesn't hurt that you can make a mess in the kitchen and leave for the day and come back to a clean place. That never happens to me at home!

Plus the campgrounds have so much for a family to do, the petting zoo, the outdoor movies and campfire, the horse stable, the beach area and bike and boat rentals.

On the other hand, if you are in WDW what could go wrong? There really is no bad choice. Just go and have fun!

We've got three kids, and we've been at several Deluxes and Port Orleans-Riverside. In all cases, we had enough room, and the kids were comfortable. The trundle bed at Port Orleans-Riverside is good for kids 12 and under. Our three boys alternated sleeping in the trundle bed each night - they all wanted to sleep in it.

We have a family of 5 and we all fit into POR. 2 adults and me (15 at time), sister (17) and brother (11). My brother's small so he slept on the trundle. We were fine with it. And it's not like you are in your room the whole day. As long as you are comfortable when sleeping, it should be fine.

When I was little, I had to sleep on the trundle, but back then, I was convinced it was a special bed just for me. It was actually very nice. I miss my family vacations. Those were the days.

just in case you have no idea what POR means, its Port Orleans Riverside (formerly known as Dixie landings)

Ps. POR has the best counter service food court on property. The security guard at the gate even agrees with me. If you are on a budget, that place has good food at a good price. Mashed potatoes, greens, and roast beef + drink = under 10 bucks! its so nice.

Thanks so much for the good information. I'd love to hear more and any experiences people might have with DVC rooms. Thanks again!

We fit 5 in POR. It wasnt bad but were really never in the room anyway, just to sleep.

This is where we are planning to stay for our next trip. We have never stayed at POR so I can't wait.

We have had two rooms before, at Music, and that works out great. We love having the extra space, so we may do this again too. It's nice for the parents to have one room and the kids have the other. :) I'm still waiting for the rates to come out. :brick:

They do not allow 5 in DVC studios or 1 BRs. Idk why they don't allow a roll-out for 1 BRs, because some of the room layouts look like they could accomodate them, but it's not allowed.

If one of the 5 is under 3 yo, and sleeps in a crib, then 5 is no problem at the DVC studios or 1 BR. Obviously the 1 BR would have more room.

I've only stayed at the SSR in a studio. Even though it is a bit larger than a mod, the kitchenette takes up some space, so it doesn't seem that much bigger. Also the pull-out is quite small. DDs then 13 and 9 preferred to sleep cross-ways on them so they didn't bump each other. I'm sure you would be comfortable with a crib in here once you figured out how to arrange things, but it is not as spacious as the deluxe resorts.

Have 3 kids and have been going to Disney a couple times a year since they were very little...they are now 18, 14 & 13. So from our experiences here goes....Our favourite memories are of the cabins at Fort Wilderness - worked very well for our family. Animal Kingdom lodge is also in our top resorts. For practicality and if you're not going to be in the room much, then POR is perfectly fine. Stayed in All-Star Music Family Suite in March, and absolutely loved it...2 bathrooms, and the small kitchenette, plus a separate bedroom for Mom & Dad. Tried Beach Club last year, but so far this has been our least favourite resort of all that we have stayed at - didn't feel it was worth the expense. Just me and 2 kids going in September, so finally get to try Coronado Springs, which wasn't a feasible option previously....looking forward to it. Good luck with your planning...no matter what resort you pick, you're at Disney, it will be great!
