Room Upgrades

It's my understanding that because Disney Resorts have been operating at much higher capacity year-round in recent years that the room upgrades are a thing of the past.

My mother in-law just got one in April. So they do still do it. I am just trying to see if something flags the rooms radomly or if it is for Florida residents, senior citizens, AP holders people who own dogs or ________.

Not sure, but I just stayed at the Contemporary last week in an AP room and my room was a Theme Park view in the tower(Didn't even have a choice in the matter, lol!!) for $374 a night...

We were upgraded last Oct at the Polynesian. We had booked a standard garden view room, and when we checked in, we were given a Magic Kingdom view room in Tahiti. It was my daughter's birthday, but I'm not sure if they were aware of that when we checked in. We are from the UK and we booked directly with Disney. This year we have booked through Virgin, I don't know if that will make a difference.

There is no way of ensuring a room upgrade. Common sense says that you stand a better change if it is a special occasion (honeymoon etc) or if the staff know that you are a very regular visitor but thats probably about it.

It will not make any difference. By policy free room upgrades are only made due to operational needs of the resorts.

Are they doing any upgrades as part of TYOMD celebration?

I do not think so. One big factor of the contest is that any person on property has an equal chance to win every prize. They do this by awarding prizes to people based on their location on property. (ie seat 6, simulator 2 on Star Tours) Singling out a resort guest for a prize could be construed as prejudice. I guess the Castle suite could be construed as a room upgrade but you will not be receiving that when you check in.

It all sounds fair and reasonable. I was just wondering if there was a way to improve the odds.
There is no sure fired way to do it anymore. The resorts seem to be at 90% + occupancy so there is no really need or ability to upgrade guests for free. The only thing that I would suggest is ti be really nice to the CM checking you in as it is up to his/her discretion to upgrade you if it is needed.

I made a reservation for me and my cousins at All Star Sports, with CM discount it was $59 a night. When we checked in, the front desk CM told us that we had been flagged for an "upgrade" to the Grand Floridian. So away we went... a water view room (we could see Space Mountain) at the Grand Floridian for $59 a night. I think that had to be the best deal ever!

We have had 3 experiances with upgrades. Twice when checking into the Poly we requested an upgrade to a lagoon view, both times we were ready and willing to pay for it, but we were never charged.

This passed trip when we were checking into the Contemporary we were told we were being given an upgrade and we didn't even ask for one.

So to answer your question, I have no idea who they decided to upgrade when. I, personally would never ask for an upgrade without being more than willing to pay for it. Don't go there expecting anything.

 That is a serious upgrade! I've gotten the modest type of upgrade from garden view to water view at Port Orleans before, but nothing as dramatic as changing resorts!

If you are an annual pass holder, are you more likely to receive a room catagory upgrade? Does it make any difference?

Room upgrades are rare. Passholder, Fl Res, etc., makes no difference as to who gets it. It's just a matter of luck and what the resort feels like doing. They could have a dozen upgraded rooms available and not give one to anyone. There is no rhyme or reason as to what they do. You can always ask, but ask very, very nicely, and don't push the issue. Don't say my mother got it, my friend got it, anything at all pushy and you will get nothing...believe me.

More than likely it was because of over-booking at the original hotel along with some sort of convention/block reservation.
