Room Upgrade?

I heard that you can request an upgrade to your resort and as long as it is available Disney will let you have a better resort. Is that true? Am I making any sense?

Room upgrades may be available when you check in so ask if that is what you want. You will have to pay the difference though as very few upgrades are gratis.

Disney is in the business of making people happy ... in order to make a profit. If there is availability and if you are willing to pay the difference, they would be happy to accommodate you at a higher-level resort.

Are you asking about checking-in at your resort and asking about a free upgrade to another resort that's more expensive than yours? Never heard of that.

I've heard of rare instances when they ask you if you are willing to do it (because of overbooking issues, such as a guest who was supposed to have already checked-out but won't leave their room because they want to stay a few days past their reservation), but they are doing this for their own purposes and aren't doing it to be nice to you. In general hotel lingo, this is called "walking" someone to a different hotel.

You can ask for a room upgrade when you arrive, there is no guarantee they will give it to you free of charge you would have to pay the difference. They will not upgrade you to a better resort without paying. The only time that would ever happen was if they resort you were booked in was overbooked and it was Disney's error. The way their system is set up, it is almost impossible that a resort gets overbooked.

If, say your booked at a value resort, you get there and decide you want to go to a moderate, the value resort could charge you for the first nights stay, and you would have to pay the new resort their rates.....

We too got Upgraded from Woods View To Courtyard View at Wilderness Lodge back in 2004. The CM just gave it to us without us asking.

Yes and no. If you ask to be upgraded to lets say from a standard room to a preferred room at a value resort and it is available, Disney will upgrade you to the preferred room and charge you the difference.

By policy Disney will only offer free upgrades, which can range all the way from a better room at your existing resort to moving you to a better resort, for operational needs of the resort. This could include overbooking, under booking, rooms being pulled out of service or any one of a myriad of reasons.

We go about once a year and have never been lucky enough to be offered a free room upgrade.

I guess you just have to be in the right spot at the right time, just like the YOAMD promotion.

Oh well, maybe one day!!

What's known only to certain experienced WDW guests is that if you walk right up to the registration counter, put your hand (either one) on top of your head, and spin clockwise 12 times while singing the 'It's a Small World' song, the CM's behind the desk will give you special attention.

True but that "special attention" will usually include a tazer, a straight jacket and a padded room.

Once in a while, totally up to the management's discretion, they may "surprise" guests with a room upgrade. Also, as others have stated, when you arrive, you can certainly ask for a room upgrade, if it's available, and pay the difference (we did this once at the DVC resort at Hilton Head). I think, over the years, the two "facts" have merged into an unholy rumor that goes "When you check in, and you ask for a free upgrade, or tell them to 'make my vacation magical,' they HAVE to GIVE it to you!"

I'd say a good rule of thumb is, when you check in, be super-extra nice and polite, make sure they know how happy you are to be there, even ask the CMs assisting you questions about themselves, like how long they've been working there, what are their favorite restaurants or attractions, are there things at the resort to look out for, that sort of stuff. If there are skids, that might grease them. But personally, I'd find it kinda doo-schnozzly to ask for something free, though I guess it might work for some people. Your mileage may vary, consult your user's manual.

As indicated above, don't ask for anything you're not willing to pay for.

If you happen to get surprised, well that's just very nice. Happened to us once at Wilderness Lodge, went from a regular room to a room looking straight out onto Bay Lake.

Also got flipped from the Bay Lake side to the Seven Seas Lagoon side once in the tower at at the Contemporary, but that was a long, long time ago.

We've gotten an upgrade @ Pop before, it even was the first year of free dining in September (So it wasn't really busy) All we did was ask at check in if any upgrades were available. We got a preferred room, King size bed, however it was a handicap room so no bathtub only a stand up shower. (Not good for a 2 year old @ the time)

It was no extra charge. You just have to ask at check in and hope you have a CM having a good day.:animwink:

A few years ago we stayed at the Polynesian for my parent's 50th anniversary. We had two rooms and asked that they be close together. I don't know if it was because of the special occasion or the request to be close, but we were upgraded from garden view to water view (a beautiful view of the marina and volcano pool) at no charge. It was great! :) Hasn't happened since :(.
