Rock work in the STOLport area

It just seems early in the game for this to have anything at all to do with FLE. Rockwork wouldn't begin until after major construction. Heck, they haven't even finished foundations.

Short Take Off and Landing air port. Many many moons ago there was a small airport located next to the TTC. The runways remain and you can check them out on Google earth.

Originally, it was Walt's idea (at least I think it was his idea) to bring people in by plane from Orlando or direct if you had your own plane. I had heard that the Epcot beam was in the way of the approach and that is why it is no longer used. I don't really see that, but maybe because they are all small planes, the company felt there was more of a risk of planes falling out of the sky onto the Monorail.

Sorry, just thought I would add some insight to the runway. Now back to our regularly scheduled rock formations!!

Shawnee Airlines operated several flights a day from McCoy to WDW back in the early 70s.

There were also plans, and provisions to build an international airport on the property.

Yet another reason I love these boards. Ask a question and within minutes get a detailed answer with photos. Thanks everyone!!:)
Yep, what did you expect us to do; actually do work at our jobs.

This thread would be a lot more understandable with some pictures of said rocks. Then we could make a better determination.

If you look on a satellite, there is an entrance to it off World Drive. I have seen it with me own eyes and would have driven down it, but they had some cargo containers blocking the way

If you "accidentally" take the first right before Wilderness Lodge you will end up on the old runway. River Country is completely blocked off. You can not get there with going past some rather obvious barriers but you can see it on the boat ride from Ft Wilderness to MK.

lol maybe i'll try going today and pull a tourist move...:p

I seem to remember someone saying that you could walk up to the "gates/barrier" of RC and be able to somewhat see it. Is that no longer true? or would I have to go past the obvious barriers before i could see any of RC..?

Not sure. I have not run the perimeter in quite some time.

I ran the beach trail from FWL to RC several weeks ago and I saw no evidence of any changes near RC. From the old docks and pump area all the way down to the cast parking area seemed wholly unchanged, but I didn't peek over the fence.

What kind of superstructure is required to create the rock work? It seems like it would not be easy to move or install if built off site. I agree that the most likely explanation is a place to practice, but I would have thought they would do something like that off site, or at least somewhere less conspicuous.

It would depend on how large it is and if it will be static or moving. Smaller static rock work can be not much more than rebar and hardware cloth. Larger stuff will typically have a steel beam superstructure, rebar and hardware cloth.

In the old Eyes and Ears Cast papers from the 70's they had a travel agency at the Polynesian as well as trips to the Bahamas from WDW! It was like a $49 flight to Freeport.
