Riverside vs French Quarter?

We are debating on which resort to stay at in september 2012. I have previously stayed at CBR (in 1998) and found it very large, are the POFQ and PORS comparable in size? Which of the two PO is better? Any recent renos or any pros and cons that anyone can share? Thanks! BTW this is my DBF first trip to disney and my 4th :)

We loved FQ! It was on the small side, but that made everything 100% walkable. The food court was great and so was the pool. When we last stayed there we were a grand gathering of 15 ppl and not one person had a single complaint about it. We plan to stay there again next year especially after learning that they upgraded bed to queen size from full.

OH my gosh, we must have twenty different threads on this exact same topic, so maybe a search will give you hundreds of opinions....

To me, it completely depends on your party and your needs. I personally won't stay anywhere BUT POFQ anymore. But others swear by PORIV.

POFQ is half the size of any other resort at WDW -- its small size means that even the furthest rooms are no more than a 5 minute walk from the food court and the busses. All of the rooms have been refurbished. Even a few years ago, it was the best kept secret at WDW -- mostly geared toward adults who enjoy the romantic location, the adult amenities, and the general quiet ambiance. The last few years, that secret is out, and it's filled with groups, families with multiple strollers, and is generally always packed now. It also is generally the first bus stop (sometimes the busses service both resorts) so you can get a seat.

PORIV is huge -- it sprawls all over the place and many of the rooms are distant from the foodcourt, pool, and transportation. It is however gorgeous. It has more activities for kids, and recreational options for the family. The river winding itself through the resort is lovely. The food court is larger and seats more people. The entire resort is beautifully designed. Only three buildings have been refurbished so far, though.

That being said -- the rooms at both resorts are virtually identical. No matter what they look like on the outside, they look the same on the inside as every other room at the resorts. No differences there between the two resorts. They both have transportation to Downtown Disney via boat, which is lovely. It's easier to get a seat if you stay in PORIV, depending on the time of the year. It offsets the terrible bus service that RIV has to the theme parks. The busses are plentiful -- but they are always completely packed to the gills.

In general, if you are traveling with adults only, POFQ is the better option. If you are traveling with kids, PORIV is the better option. They are both physically lovely.

I prefer PORS. Although I've never stayed at POFQ. I've visited a few times. We've been to RS each of the past 3 years. We absolutely love it. It is more spread out and much more peaceful and relaxing, especially Alligator Bayou. FQ always seems loud to me. The food court is huge and Boatwright's, the sit down restaurant, is a hidden gem. The bar area and YeeHaw Bob are great for entertainment. Note: Kids are allowed. The gift shop is nice too. We have never had an issue with the busses. Ever! We've been in September 2 of the last 3 years and the only time a bus was shared with FQ was during the day. Hope this helps, if you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

I personally always stay at FQ....it's just so comfortable for me. I do however walk to RS often and enjoy walking around that resort. It seems to have a better food court, gift shop, recreational facilities and a sit down restaurant...if those things are important to you.

Haven't they completed the renos at RS? I thought they were doing the entire resort, not just some princess rooms??? I know they recently renovated the entire FQ resort. I stayed in a brand new room last Jan/Feb....nice....clean....queen sized beds a real bonus. :)

Although I prefer Riverside, and have only been there as part of a couple (as opposed to traveling with children), French Quarter would probably get the nod as the more "romantic" resort. Bear in mind "romantic" at WDW doesn't necessarily equate most non-WDW-visitors standards of romance.

The major perks Riverside has over French Quarter - the onsite restaurant (even though it's only open for dinner), the lounge has nighttime entertainment about 5 nights out of the week (I don't believe Scat Cat over at French Quarter does, my apologies if I'm wrong), and the pool/recreation area is, IMHO, much more fun than FQ's. Plus Riverside has a number of quiet pools, which FQ does not. Each time I've stayed at Riverside, I've never been more than around the corner from a quiet pool, and while I enjoy a good giant pool as much as the next guy, quiet pools are, well, quiet, and sometimes at WDW, that's what you need. Even when kids were there at the same time, theytended to be quiet kids. :D

Scat Cat has nighttime entertainment for 4 nights a week starting from 8:30 p.m. to midnight on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday with Elliot Dyson being the performer.

I've stayed at Riverside many times, dating back to the Dixie Landings days and we absolutely love it. I can't comment on French Quarter as I have never stayed there.

We've just got back from a 2 week trip at Riverside, was my partners first time there and he couldnt believe how beautiful the surroundings were! We also got one of the newly refurbished rooms in Magnolia Terrace which was spotless.

We have stayed at both and Riverside is the one for us. Heck we remember when it was FQ and Dixie Landings. In any case for rooms you cant miss with Magnolia Bend. As for entertainment you cannot miss with Riverside as they have Yehaa Bob! Yehaa Bob is the most fun ever. Totally audience participation appropriate for kids and an absolute blast.

Our last stay was our third at French Quarter since 2007. It's our favorite moderate resort because of its small size, quaint atmosphere and better-than-average bus service. The rooms are very nice now that they've been refurbished.

That freak snowstorm that hit the Northeast in late October canceled our flight home, so we booked two more nights with Disney and stayed at Riverside for the first time. The room we were given was close to the pool and main building, which is good since the resort is seriously sprawling. The room hadn't been refurbished yet, but it was still comfortable. We enjoyed having dinner at Boatwrights. Buses to the parks seemed really full by the second stop (there are four stops at Riverside).

I think that if you're likely to use your hotel's amenities, the sit-down restaurant and recreation options at Riverside make it ideal. If those things aren't a big draw for you, however, the French Quarter is the more convenient resort.

we like both resorts. i prefer pofq for the size, it's smaller than por or cbr. i'd say cbr and por are about the same size imo. i've had positive experiences at all 3.

Why, exactly, is the POR bus service so horrible? We're staying there for the first time in two weeks and still debating whether to drive to the parks or take the bus.

I'm staying at FQ for the first time next september. I can't wait after all the great feedback I've heard about it :) Also like the look of FQ much better than the POR. We're going to pick up a rental car at the airport and drive to all the parks, gives us so much more freedom to have breakfast off property and to do grocery shopping and other stuff after the parks :)

Yep there are a lot of threads on this topic - so please do search. But we have stayed at both and they each have their positives and negatives. We lean toward FQ as we enjoy the smaller resort feel.

I absolutely love Riverside. I've stayed there the past two years. We are staying at Coronado this winter but that is just because we want to try something new. We loved every minute of Riverside.
It is very large and expansive. I like this about the resort however. I don't mind a bit of a walk and it is amazing how quiet and empty the resort feels when really it is most likely quite filled up. We loved the food court and main building areas. It has really beautiful theming. The quiet pools are also great. I am not one to visit really crowded pools so I liked that each building had a quiet pool close to it. I would definitely recommend the Magnolia Bend rooms over Alligator Bayou. I haven't stayed in Alligator Bayou and I am sure it is just as nice, but I prefer Magnolia Bend's theming.
We've walked or taken the boat over the FQ many times and it is just as lovely, but like everyone else said much smaller. Depending on what you prefer maybe you would like the smaller resort more.
I don't think you can lose with either one so this is going to be a hard decision. I definitely think you are in the right direction with picking Port Orleans over other moderates. The boat service to Downtown Disney is a great perk and it's extremely relaxing as well. We took it one night just to take a short ride, we didn't even stay at Downtown Disney for very long. I love passing the Treehouse Villas!

If you want to see some pictures from Riverside, I wrote a photo review on my blog. You can check it out here:
