Ride Injuries

I was just checking out Themepark Insider and the section on ride injuries. There are a lot of confirmed (and unconfirmed) injuries, some fatal, on a number of rides @ WDW. Which leads me to the question---just how well does Disney design, test, and maintain their rides if people are suffering brain damage on such rides as RnR and ToT? Sure, any ride carries a risk, but the number of injuries confirmed by official reports is a bit scary. I'm not knocking Disney safety, but any thoughts?

I know for a fact that half the accidents are because of ppl... not the rides. Some idiots want to get a cheap thrill by running on a monorail beam then hey! Your gonna pay! Its the peoples iresponsiblitiy not DIsney....

The reason why there are injuries in rides is because morons want to have good pictures of like the floor on space mountain that they will reach over the side of the car and end up falling out... Why? Just because like I said... THEY'RE MORONS!!!!

to similiarly chime in.... I don't know of a single disney accident that could not have been prevented by people OBEYING SAFETY RULES. Unlike Six Flags which has a horrid DESIGN safety record (some coaster designs have resulted in constant injuries) Disney is relatively clean. I suggest you visitRide Injury Reports to get a good picture of the industry.

I agree with everyone's thoughts - most of the time it's people's stupidity. Here in Kansas City we have an amusement park, Worlds of Fun, which has had more deaths and serious injury than I can recall ever hearing Disney have. We've had everything from cars going off the track to people just slipping out of there harnises to the safety features just not working and people falling out to people just being stupid and standing up on a rollar coaster. You just don't hear that stuff with Disney. I'm not afraid to ride ANY ride at Disney. I am nervous about some rides at other parks throughout the USA. A lot of ride injuries I think are people who had problems to begin with or prone to those injuries and they're just trying to make a fast buck on their injury. We live in a SUE HAPPY time - if you can make money off of something why not - that's the way I feel a lot of our society is. And I hate that cause everyone else pays for it.

Well - I'll get off my soapbox now. Bottom line - I feel like Disney does an EXCELLENT job with maintain the safety of it's rides!!!!

As long as people insist on being idiots, people will keep dying on Disney rides for unnatural reasons.

I killed a pair of very expensive sunglasses on Rock N Roller Coaster !!!!! :hammer: As for physical injuries : if you obey the safety rules you don't get hurt, the rules aren't just there for you to read to pass the time as you wait in line:confused:

I would think that most of the serious injuries are b/c of A- those people shouldn't be riding the ride in the first place or B- lack of care on their part. Still, the rides are just machines and the occasional accident (minor or otherwise) is bound to occur.

To echo the majority sentiment, it's the people not following rules that's the problem. My brother fell and broke his arm after exiting Splash Mountain. How you ask? He and group were running through exit area and were trying to get back in line for one more ride before the park closed. They made it and took a last ride and then proceeded to leave the park and walk back to the Contemporary. Once back to the hotel, he took a cab to the hospital for an xray and cast. Luckily for all of them, they were leaving to come home in the morning.

I have to agree with everybody that anyone who gets hurt on a ride at WDW probably does so through stupidity! The rides are relatively slow and benign. Since I live 20 minutes away from Busch Gardens Williamsburg, we always have season passes. Believe me, there is nothing as physically "demanding" at WDW as any of the five coasters at BG! I'm sure this is true of any of the other coaster oriented parks around the country. What is special about Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, TOT, etc. is the way they are done as a whole experience, not their speed! And I also have no doubts that they are all over-engineered as as far as safety goes.

I once did a report on theme park accidents, so I have too much knowledge on this topic. THE CM death on CoP was due to her being positioned in the wrong place. Then, there was the fool hiding out on Tom Sawyer's Island at closing who drowned, the guy who decided it would be smart to stand up on Space Mountain, people leaning out of ride vehicles, stepping off of vehicles before they were stopped completely (as the little speil is running..."please wait for your vehicle to come to a complete stop..."). No offense, but I don't even feel pity for these people. I mean, for crying out loud!! A theme park can be the most dangerous place in the world for people who lack common sense. In my research, I don't remember finding ONE major accident that was caused by ride malfunctioning or anything other than guest negligence.

Then, of course, there's the 2 deaths that just occurred at Six Flags this weekend...(Denver) again, someone took off their restraints & tried to stand up on a ride. Well, guess what happened to this guy? (Georgia) And the employee who wandered into a "no access" area & got kicked in the head by someone on an upside down coaster. Another fatality.

Maybe you should be forced to submit to an IQ test before entering a theme park. I'm sorry if I seem harsh. I'm really not. It has just always bothered me when rides have to be closed & all sorts of hassles & scrutiny starts just because of someone's carelessness. Then, people start to wonder what the theme parks are doing wrong. Disney went through all sorts of grief over the kid on Roger Rabbit in DL & I'm sorry, but if the parent had been paying attention to their child, he wouldn't have had a chance to get his legs underneath the ride vehicle!! I go to WDW with my 2 kids frequently. Obviously, at the age of 2, my youngest doesn't comprehend what would happen to him if he tried to grab for Tigger or Pooh on a ride. It is MY job to see that he DOESN'T DO IT!!! So, people do stupid, careless things, start a big problem for others & try to sue the theme parks for it!! Very aggravating.

Hear hear, it's good to see a responsible visitor (and parent). I can't count how many times I've seen parents allow their children to do insane things in the parks and on the rides. Also, I was shocked at an incident I saw a few years back @ Universal where a father pushed his young son to the ground. And on my recent visit to WDW a mother smacked her child for crying about not wanting to go on Space Mtn. Fortunately the CM wouldn't allow the child to go...he was terrified. It's good to know there are still decent people out there who don't do things like this.

I don't know how it is that there aren't more injuries in the Speedway...kids jump out any side of the car and run between them....drivers slam other cars as people are entering or exiting a car (that happened to me)...and I saw kids jump out of their car on the Speedway and switch cars...the potential for injury has to be on the high side for this attraction.

I don't get why people walk right pass the safety precautions and get hurt on the ride. Why are they so dense!? Hellloooo??!!:hammer:

and how?

I had no idea so many people died on all these attractions

I don't think anyone DIED on the ferryboat....there are just a lot of injuries. I've seen at least 2....one was a child who slipped on the stairs and got a gash on her chin, another was an adult who was "pushed" during the departure rush and hurt her ?ankle ? foot.....I didn't get the details. Many people try to move around when the boat is docking (despite the warnings) and others get caught in the rush. Also, a lot of children don't have 2 story homes, so aren't very good on stairs....and these stairs are on a moving vehicle! I know my stairs have been a problem at my house when small children visit!

Well that, but, someone did die. Somthing came loose on the boat and hit someone. It killed that person and injured 2 others.
