Richard Petty Driving Experience- Adding Exotic Cars?

I saw a rumor posted on the DISboards about a new road course infield being paved next year and the ability to drive a Lamborghini, Ferrari, Corvette and eventually Aston Martin and Porsche as well.

Has anyone heard anything more confirmed about this? I'd be ready to sign up to drive a Ferrari 458!!!!!!

That would be awesome!

this would be a neat thing to do, but maintenance costs/warranty issues would certainly destroy any possibility of this ever happening IMO

An update to this, from Inside the Magic:

A new driving experience will debut at Walt Disney World’s Richard Petty Driving Experience in January 2012 featuring fast and sleek exotic sports cars. Tentatively titled “Project Exotic,” the experience will offer a chance to get behind the wheel of some of the world’s fastest cars.

Included on the list of cars that will be available for taking around the track are the Ferrari F430 Scuderia, Ferrari F458 Italia, Lamborghini Gallardo LP560, Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera, Audi R8, Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, and Porsche 911 GTR3.

The exact name of this addition to the existing Richard Petty Driving Experience, which allows Disney guests to ride in or drive open-wheel and stock cars, is still being decided. According to the survey on the Project Exotic web site, name choices being considered include “Exotic Driving Experience,” “Exotic Track Experience,” “ExotiCar,” and “Exotic Drives.”

Regardless of what it will be called, in just a couple months new cars will be hitting the track located just outside the parking lot for the Transportation and Ticket Center and Magic Kingdom.

Back in February, guests at Epcot had a chance to drive the Corvette along with other Chevrolet and GMC cars in a special (and unrelated) traveling event called Main Street in Motion. The relatively small course laid out in cones in the Epcot parking lot offered a quick taste at what it’s like to drive fast cars near a Disney theme park.

If the excitement of that brief drive is any indication of the thrills that will be offered during high-speed loops around the Richard Petty Driving Experience track come January, then Project Exotic is sure to be a success.

The will be governed down and a pace car in front to the point brakes will not be needed in turns. I'll pass and head back to my VIR and Summit Point.

Oh man. I wonder if they're going to do this Project Exotic at different locations where the Richard Petty Driving Experience is already set up. My oldest is turning 16 in March and would loooove a ride (he knows he doesn't have a prayer of driving). I don't want to have to take him all the way to WDW for a ride. We have no solid plans to go back to WDW until 2013 at the earliest so waiting to celebrate late isn't an option. Ugh! Very cool that this is being offered. I would do it in a heartbeat! :D

Not even one Merc!?

I can't help but wondering, are they going to let you really drive the cars? I assume they'll restrict you to a certain speed. Plus, I can't imagine they'll let you turn the traction control off :ROFLOL:

Any driving experience. Unless you foot the bill for a Panoz, Skip Barber, or something of the like then the vehicle will be governed significantly. It is how all of the schools are conducted. Ferraris at Sebring, Ariel Atom at Laguna, all Richard Petty experiences (I have participated in several of them at Daytona, Richmond, and Charlotte), and even the Mustang challenge that Ford has been doing for promotional reasons.

Don't get me wrong I think it is something great for people who do not spend a lot of time at cars or tracks. 120-140 mph can be exhilarating for someone with no track experience. If you do visit tracks and actually race then you will be disappointed.

There is too much liability with letting cars run all out. Many people know nothing of driving lines, apexes, or car control. All of those are crucial to high speed driving. On the note of that the track has no safer-barrier walls and that is the big reason NASCAR no longer has events there. Running at high speeds and hitting the wall there would be very painful and poses a huge risk for injury.

I seriously doubt the cars will be governed. I would imagine an instructor will be in the car with you as you drive to provide instruction and guidance. Also if pricing is around $199, it would be TOTALLY worth the experience. I think speeds will reach over 100mph for sure around the turn and straightaways...I read a couple of blogs saying the track will be "hybrid" - 1/2 road course 1/2 oval...pretty unique idea. Hopefully by 2013 they will have expanded to other locations. I think Daytona would make the most since as the next location.... I'm definitely going to give it a try.....
