Rhino on the loose

Even if rhinos or other animals hit the vehicle, aren't the safari trucks built for that in the first place? So they're isn't that much to worry about as one would think.

Unlike the rhino on the Jungle Cruise at the Magic Kingdom, the rhinos at Disney's Animal Kingdom are wild animals, so they behave like the would in the wild.

Rhinos have a strong sense of smell and hearing, but they have poor eyesight, so when they see a truck, they see not a truck, but an interloper on their territory. Thus, they charge. But, when they get close enough, they see it is only a truck. Thus, they pull up. At least, that is usually how it works.

Disney tries to keep the rhinos separate from the guests, as much as possible, as much as for the protection of the rhinos, which are an endangered species, as for the guests, but accidents do happen.

This happens to some of us several times... a day. ;)

It's nothing out of the ordinary. Not sure what you mean by "Rhino area" but I'm assuming you're talking about the Black Rhino area that you see during the very first part of the safari. Towards the end of the safari, there is a different group of rhinos... White Rhinos. The White Rhinos are completely free roaming in that area of the reserve, which includes the ability to come right up to (and sometimes charge) the vehicles.

I can assure you the rhino was not "lost," and what you're describing just sounds like an average day at Kilimanjaro Safaris. (Never a dull moment!)

See for yourself in this short video, right around 14 seconds you'll see some white rhinos right alongside the safari truck:

Thanks for the clearup. My mom wasnt to clear on the description I just needed some feed back to see if this actually has happened before and what i Just read clearly proves its no big deal. Thanks!

Wow! Am I the only one who thinks this would be TOO COOL to see? I would love to see some upclose interaction with the animals. A friend of mine was on KS when a giraffe decided to check out the people in the truck very closely. She said he walked right up and stuck his head in. I've never seen anything like this on KS but would LOVE to.

No animal has ever hit the car that I was in. However, one time we had to stop for about 10-15 minutes because I Giraffe started walking across the pathway and then stood there in front of our truck and wouldn't move.:)
I had that same thing happen once too. We sat in the same spot for about 10 minutes before the giraffe decided to move back out of the road into the grass.

Man, I like the safari ride and all but kind of find it a little boring. I hardly see the animals move. I wish something more exciting would happen to me when I am there. Hopefully in 2 weeks they will be moving more!!!
Have you tried riding in the morning - right when the park opens? I'm never disappointed when I go at that time. It's my favorite ride in DAK!

:ROFLOL: :ROFLOL: This is funny so far....

We had an ostrich incident and were stuck for about 10 minutes while it stood in the road, but it was so close you could've reached over and been able to pet it - not that anyone has a habit of touching strange birds :lookaroun Maybe looking for a good spot to stick its head in the sand....

We had a White Rhino tailing our safari vehicle a few years ago. It was just like in the John Wayne movie Hatari.

You gotta be kidding.
Rhino's cant jump that high and it would take all the rhino's in the park to gang up and hit the same side of the lorry at the same time for them to tip it or cause damage.
As for liability.............what liability, I think its time to live dangerously.
Isn't that part of the exilleration of driving around WILD animals.

It's been three years since I've been to AK, so I must have had a fuzzy memory. I was kind of thinking the trucks had open sides such that a Rhino could charge and nail you in the leg. But I guess I was remembering incorrectly.

When that happens, do they like shut down the ride. I mean if theres like a long traffic jam, what can they do other than just sit there.

And if theres a long traffic jam couldn't that increase the risk of a rhino charging a vehicle if its stuck in that spot. Or another type of animal peering in another vehicle.

we were once by the white rhino and cheetah areas and a rhino started charging but then turned and ran right along side
but the coolest thing was all the cheetahs stood up and ran to the edge of their containment watching the rhino
