PLOT: Young Princess Rapunzel’s (Mandy Moore) hair holds the secret to eternal youth, provided it never gets cut. In order to stay young, an old woman named Gothel (Donna Murphy) kidnaps the princess, raising her as her own child. Not knowing the truth about her royal roots, Rapunzel has spent her eighteen years as Gothel’s prisoner. When a young thief, Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi) stumbles upon Rapunzel’s tower, she blackmails him into springing her from her prison- but Gothel’s on their trail.

REVIEW: TANGLED is essentially a CGI update of Disney’s late-eighties/nineties era cartoons- like THE LITTLE MERMAID, ALADDIN, THE LION KING, and BEAUTY & THE BEAST. It’s a fairy-tale that, unlike the SHREK films, isn’t updated with a lot of current pop-culture references, but rather maintains the old-school Disney vibe. Like those earlier Disney classics, it’s a full-fledged musical, with tunes by Alan Menken (ALADDIN).

But how does it compare to current Disney classics, such as the long-line of modern masterpieces produced by Pixar? Well, it doesn’t. Despite John Lasseter being listed as a producer, TANGLED is missing the Pixar magic. Still, that’s not to say it isn’t quite entertaining in its own right, as there’s something charming about TANGLED’s old-school vibe. I couldn’t help but think that it probably would have worked better as a traditional, 2-D animated film, rather than CGI, but I suppose that’s no longer in vogue (sadly).

TANGLED follows the old-school Disney formula to a T, with it being your typical “boy meets/loses/wins girl” story, with a bit of swashbuckling mixed in to keep the lads interested. Princess Rapunzel, as voiced by Moore, makes a fine addition to the long line of Disney heroines. She’s cute, and sassy, and intensely likable. As for her numerous songs, well… Thing is, they’re very “cute”, and obviously something that the kiddie audience will go for in a big way, but as for grown-ups, I could have done with a song or two less, although a long number sung by a bunch of ruffians encounter by our heroes (being led by Brad Garrett, and JAWS- Richard Kiel, of all people) is quite clever.

Flynn Rider, voiced by Levi, of the cult fave TV series, CHUCK, makes a likable, swashbuckling hero- with him borrowing his name from the greatest swashbuckler of them all, Errol Flynn. As per the genre, he’s a likable rogue, and he’s a fun character. Levi’s great, but oddly, the character also seems heavily patterned on Chris Evans, from the look, right down to the cocky, wisecracking personality (he even rocks a soul patch, which is a Disney first I think).
Probably the most important thing to remember about TANGLED is that it’s a REAL kids film, as opposed to the Pixar films, which are truly for everyone. This one’s strictly for the youngsters, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a very well-made kid’s film. It’s the type of film that will likely be something your kids will watch over and over and over again on DVD, but it’s enough fun that even if you have to watch it a few times, it’s not that oppressive. As for older kids, I’m not sure they’ll take to it like they do to the Pixar films, so if you have kids over 10, you’re probably better off taking them to HARRY POTTER if you haven’t already. But for the youngsters- this is a slam-dunk!

Really? Only 7/10?

I've heard this is the best film since the Lion King/Walt-era good. A reviewer on RT.com says that he wanted to throw a parade for the movie.

I would say that is definitely an over-exageration --

It's a good film as far as Disney Formula goes....it doesn't even begin to compare with the Lion King era...

Individual reviewers can say whatever they want. I do the same. But you can't compare a fairytale retelling updated to have a "hip" sensibility (UGH, I can't stand the way kids talk these days -- this film is filled with those kinds of words and sayings) with a classic like Lion King.

Personally, I liked the film -- I liked a few of the songs, and I was glad it was better than last year's Princess and the Frog, which put me to sleep. But you could drive a truck through the holes in the script. Nothing really made sense -- a girl never out of her home before knows everything about interacting with the world around her after one short song?...whatever...

THe animation looked fantastic. Glad I saw it. But it's instantly forgettable.

Even if it is not Shrek style of movie and cgi fairy tale jabfest...marketing screwed up as that is the way it was often advertised, especially early on. I have not seen one AD for this film from teasers to present that says its a musical. Between changing the name to Tangled, advertising as a CGI one liner flick and not showing it has that musical class touch...it was a marketing fail. A good rep and reviews could help save it with wort of mouth though.

Rotten Tomatoes is giving Tangled an 87% rating; not too shabby indeed. And it brought in over $11 million on its first day.

My family saw it yesterday and I have to say it was great. I really can't point to anything I didn't like.

I also definitely disagree with the OP's posted review because it is definitely not a Children only movie. There are alot of good parts that adults can enjoy, heck out son's friend's parents came with us and they are not Disney film people but they were laughing hysterically through out most of the picture.

It is pretty good! I laughed a lot! The language is more moden and changes over time so of course it won't be the same as past movies.

We loved it. Pixar depth? Nope, but just as entertaining as ANYTHING produced by Disney in 10 years. Songs? Two are absolute show stoppers which hang with the best Disney toons. The others are very good. Animation? This is the first CGI film that (to me) felt as fluid as hand drawn and the backgrounds are flat out beautiful. And the witch / kidnapping mother figure is as evil a nemesis as you have seen in years. She and Lotso could go toe to toe.

Tangled is funny, sweet, and absolutely wonderful. It's not quite as brilliant as Beauty and the Beast Lion King, or Mermaid, but easily stands in their company. This is the real Disney comeback. This is what I had wished Princess and the Frog to be.

Last, the name change and advertising campaign were brilliant. My 17 year old son couldn't wait to see the film. My brother-in-law, who hasn't seen an animated flick in years was there on Wednesday. Both of them loved it. My theater (3 screens dedicated to Tangled) was sold out all day (NOT THE CASE for P&TF) and my 8 PM show was packed. There was applause at the end of the film, which I have not seen in years other than for a PIXAR release. This film will double the Box Office of P&TP and will have legs until January.

Welcome Back Disney.

I just got back from seeing it. And it is just amazing. The animation is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. In fact, Tangled is easily the most beautiful CGI animated film ever made, bar none. It recalls the beauty of 2D classics like Pinocchio and Sleeping Beauty. In fact, until I saw Tangled, I never thought a CGI film could ever look as good as Disney's best 2Ds, but Tangled comes about as close as I suspect CGI ever will.

The characters are quite likable, Rapunzel especially. Flynn's likable too, which surprises me, given how obnoxious he seemed in the trailers. The sidekicks aren't the spastic types you see in so many other animated films; I especially liked Maximus, the horse. The voice acting is superb. The music is lovely.

BUT the songs, unfortunately, aren't particularly memorable. Not a one has anything like the power of songs like "Beauty and the Beast" or "Part Of Your World". They're well-performed, but they're not gonna sell a lot of CDs IMO.

Still, I give the movie 4 stars out of 5. A VERY good effort by WDAS. AND it looks like Tangled's a bona-fide hit! It made 50 million in 3 days and looks to hit 70 million by Monday - and it had to compete with Harry Potter, so that's very good. Bravo, Disney! :sohappy:

Took my 9year old daughter and 10 year old niece.

We all loved it. They laughed, they cried ( I won't admit to anything :) ).
The lantern scene is awesome. The horse is a riot. The animation is great.

We all agreed it was a notch better than Princess and the Frog.

I still can't get over the "hip" dialogue that is scattered throughout the film and soundtrack...I preferred TPaTF.

What "hip" dialog didn't work for you? Disney's been using "contemporary" dialog in essentially all their movies since Oliver and Company, so why was Tangled an offender more than others?

I really liked this movie as agree it was better than Princess and the Frog, for me in almost every respect. Audiences seem to agree too with the movie making $69 million over its first five days of release according to Box Office Mojo as of now. Looks like this could be Disney's highest grossing domestic release of an animated movie since Lion King (). With adjusting for inflation? Only time will tell, but it wouldn't surprise me.

A flat out fun and entertaining movie!!! Period.

Yep, a couple of plot holes, but what Pixar or other animated films don't? Not sure what all the fuss over plot and plot holes is. It's a boy meets girl, loses girl, gets girl back story...and it was told well!!!

Including the first foreign box office numbers, Box Office Mojo has Tangled bringing in almost $83 million. :)

Hopefully. PatF turned pretty good Box Office numbers as well and they acted like the sky had fallen.

Hardly. I looked it up. P&TF had it's widest release weekend (3434 screens) with a box office 24,208,916 last year. Tangled did slightly less then 1/2 that in its opening day. P&TF barely hit 100 million after multiple weeks in release. Tangled may hit that by the beginning of its third week.

Is Tangled a monster type "Lion King" level hit? Too early to tell, but the early signs are very good. Tangled had the highest per screen average (13,628) of any major release this past weekend in 3606 screens. P&TF was at 7,050 per screen in its widest release weekend, which was far beneath what everybody thought it would do.

Now it is true that Tangled opened up in a better position (1 week AFTER Harry Potter vs PATF a week BEFORE Avatar). It's also true that Tangled out-performed everyones expectations and P&TF underperformed.

Disney is going to be VERY happy this morning!

Everyone is going to have an opinion of why this happened. In the end though, it boils down to this. Tangled is a more entertaining movie that was better marketed and opened in what turned out to be a better time slot.

I also think it has a much better chance to attract multiple viewers. That's really the "Holy Grail" of the really big Box Office numbers. I know that I am probably going to see it again when my kids are home from college over the holidays.

I just got back from it. Over all I thought it was pretty good, but not as good as some of the members on here have been raving. I thought the first half of the movie was just okay (it still had quite a Dreamworks-esque feel to it IMO), but from the lantern scene onwards I thought it picked up considerably. Especially the finale where it got really nice and dramatic.

My biggest problem? The songs. I for the life of me could not repeat any of them right now. I actually found the songs in PATF to be more memorable which is really saying somthing. They weren't bad, but none of them stood out or had any really catchy tune.
