Results of horrible weather

One year, we arrived the same day as Tropical Storm Fay. It was noon when we were at the entrance to the Magic Kingdom. I heard the music for the daytime parade. My husband said, "It can't be the parade. It's not 3pm." Sure enough, CMs were handing out fliers stating that should they have to close the park early, here's the 3pm parade." The storm joined us for the whole trip. It even had the same check out day I guess since that's the first day we saw blue skies.

Last year we were leaving the MK when a huge cell came. Lightning was insane. My mom in NY was texting me to take cover since she saw it online. We were huddled under the awning by guest relations outside the park. People were taking chances and walking to the monorail. Honestly, it did seem pretty risky at times. After waiting 45 minutes, I told the kids to take off their socks and sneakers. We put them in our wonderful, see-through, plastic backpack and just left. It wasn't the best way to end the day, but at least I didn't have to dry sneakers for the next day when we got back to the resort.

First trip ever and the our first park was Animal Kingdom. Went through the entrance, made it to the main walkway toward the tree of life and the bottom fell out and we stood under the rock shelter with several other people. The rain stopped several minutes later and out came the sun and off we went! We had several rain showers throughout the week but it was a great first trip!

This happened to us in September. We all seemed to want to wait out the rain even after the show was cancelled. They eventually asked everyone to exit.

I had the same thing happen at Indy 2 weeks ago. Show was canceled because of the weather, and most of the crowd just sat there for a while. It was not raining, but lightning, and was hot and humid. I guess everyone had the same idea we did, sit here for a while and plan what to do next.

Years ago, when the Little Mermaid show in DHS just opened, I got caught in a rainstorm and was soaked. We went into Little Mermaid and I was happy to be inside and drying off. Then it rains in the show. I had never seen it before and had no idea it was comming and was suprised by it. I said, rather loudly "Oh, what the HELL" when it started to rain. The people around me were kind of amused.

The worst rain we had was in Hollywood Studios last year while waiting for Fantasmic. It was overcast the whole time, then as we were waiting, started to rain. Then it turned to a downpour. They kept saying the show would go on, as we all waited in the rain. Then eventually, the rain got so bad the show was in fact cancelled, and they just did their non-actor, quick version of the show as it was still raining.

Never had a night show like that be cancelled before.

One time it was too cold for them to run Splash Mountain at night time, which was a bit disappointing, it really wasn't that cold, but at least everything else was open.

am I the only one who continues around the park when it rains? It's only water, last I checked, I'm not the wicked witch, not like I'm gonna melt. And I walk on to all the indoor rides

I throw on my rain jacket or poncho, tuck my camera and purse underneath, and continue on. I love to take advantage of the shorter waits! :D

We went on the Carousel of Progress a few years back. It was sunny and nice. We came out of CoP and there was standing water everywhere. A LOT of standing water. But the sun was out lol. We had missed the entire storm while on the ride. We have started renting a locker each day we are in the parks to keep some sweatshirts and ponchos available (we visit in December). If the forecast is calling for rain we carry the ponchos with us in a small backpack. Nothing worse than rain starting when you are near splash mountain and your rain gear is in a locker back at the train station near the front gate! lol

This is Orlando, it rains for an hour then stops.

In my own personal experiences at the parks, this is not true 100% of the time. We have had numerous days where it rained an entire afternoon/evening and others where it rained all day and night. A total washout. Much longer than the 1 hour Florida rain and it is done for the day. Over the years, I have seen June become more rainy and more days effected by it.

last summer we stayed at Polynesian and were getting ready to head to MK for a liberty tree tavern dinner reservation. As we were leaving the Hawaii building, the down pour started. The 3 of us (DW @awheartsdw and DD) started building hopping to try and get to the Grand Ceremonial House. 2 of us made it, I am afraid my DW was a puddle casualty. She lost a flip flop in a above ankle puddle and just froze there in the rain barefoot. Eventually we made it to MK and the rain stopped. The puddles were so deep that we all walked into MK barefoot. Still a great story for us.

I would very much agree. I think most of the Florida showers are very short - I'd say closer to 20 minutes than an hour. It's fun to wait them out, dry in a shop, while people are running for the exits. In 20 minutes the sun comes out and you have the park to yourself!

But then there have been times when the rain came in and stayed for many hours. I just pick up a cheap umbrella and continue with my park-storming day.

My worst rain encounter happened at Disneyland.

It started to rain while on It's a Small World, so when the boats exited the building we were stuck in the rain with nowhere to go for a few minutes (the boats are always backed up a little bit so you are sitting outside without moving at the end of the ride).

In May of 2010 my fiancee (now wife) and I where on the bus to HS when it began to pour. We had no choice but to exit into the downpour and were soaked by the time we got the turnstiles. The place looked empty. Hollywood Boulevard - deserted. Sunset Boulevard - maybe three people. We walked right onto the tower of terror. Went around and walked right onto it a second time.

When we came back out to Sunset Boulevard it was wall to wall people. To this day we have no idea where everyone was hiding out.

Lesson learned - don't be afraid of getting wet. Some of our best touring and shortest lines have been in the rain.

I've had 2 experiences. about 9-10 years ago, we had a bit of a hurricane. raining, windy all morning. we were staying at ASM. they gave all guests access to free movies (Disney related). afterwards, when it was clearing up, it was announced that the parks were opening for resort guests only. we went to MK & it was half empty. turned out to be a good day.
the 2nd one happened last October. it was our last day & we're at Epcot. the skies opened & it was a total deluge. we were considering throwing in the towel after lunch at 9 dragons. shortly after, sun & clear skies. Florida weather.

Our worst rain was January in MK. We knew the day would be soggy and prepared buy wearing water shoes or flip flops. We always scotch guard our backpack and stroller before leaving so they were ready. The ponchos, stroller rain cover and a few hand towels. We were doing OK until parade time, the skies really kicked up and the temp dropped to about 47. The babies in the stroller covered were fine but our other 4 kids were turning blue and had chattering teeth! We followd the parade out of the park. By the time we got to the Main Street hub our ankles were covered in cold water. Of course the Monorails were down so we rode the boat back to parking. Thank goodness for heated seats! We actually let our 5 and 6 yo's strip down and wear the towels home!
I will take summer rain ANY TIME after our wet freezing cold afternoon in MK!
We are returning this January and packing rain boots or shoes for all of us...

By the way, just a really late update on my story...

The performed the 3:00 show for us but cut it short right after the village number.

While I don't have any big storms stories but, youtube sure does...Like this one for example...

After living in Orlando for a year I see no reason why people complain about the weather. This is Orlando, it rains for an hour then stops. To your credit, last night it was crazy rain and fantasmic was cancelled. But again, this is Orlando, it will rain for an hour then stop.

Basically it's this.....
