Resort to resort

I know this has been asked before but I don't remember the answer so I'll go ahead and ask it again. I've never stayed on property without a rental car so my info has some gaps regarding the bus system. Is there any way to get from one resort to another for dinner reservations, or do you have to take the bus to a park or Downtown Disney and then take one back out to your destination? Specifically, I will be arriving at Old Key West via DME but then dining at Whispering Canyon Cafe without spending any time in the parks in between. What would be my best option for making the round trip?

So long as you're travelling before MK closes, bus to MK and boat to WL and reverse going back. After MK closes, going back would likely entail bus to DTD then bus to OKW.

Unless you are NEAR Downtown Disney, don't use it as a transfer point. (I would put Port Orleans and Old Key West and Saratoga Springs near DTD)

In general, yes, you use a park as a transfer point.

For your OKW to WL trip, I would take the bus to MK and then the resort boat to WL (or the bus to WL)

After dinner when you are leaving WL, it depends on what parks are open. If MK is open, transfer there, if not, go to Epcot and transfer OR just take the bus to DTD and then transfer to OKW.

Do a google search for Transportation Wizard, a site has a tool that lists all of these combinations with estimated times.

Always allow at least 60 minutes for these trips when using Disney transportation, sometimes 90.

In your specific case, getting there, you could
1: Bus to MK, then bus or boat to WL
2: Bus or boat to DTD (as OKW is pretty close to DTD) then bus to WL.
3: The more-risky but still possible option is to take the very first bus at your bus stop to any of the parks, then bus from there to WL. The odds are slim this will save you some time; if a bus for Epcot and a bus for MK pulled up at the same time, you'd almost-definitely be better off taking the bus to MK. But if you just happen to miss one bus to the MK, and you've no idea when the next bus to MK will show up, and a bus to any of the other parks is pulling up to the station, there's a chance that will be fastest.

Either Option 1 or Option 2 would be preferable. I'd probably opt for 2, only because if I'm not going to MK that first day, I don't even want to get that close to it :D

On the way back, you can reverse any one of the three options above, provided the time you finish dinner is within 2 hours of the parks' respective closings for the night. Taking a bus to DTD would afford you the opportunity to do a little shopping (or window shopping) before going back home, and having that pleasant boat ride back to OKW.
