It’s one thing to order something, it is entirely different to actually make it happen.
No it isn't. It happens all the time at other companies to the tune of millions of dollars saved. Mine included. This is simply a case of WDI being unwilling to follow that directive, not unable to.

And edit to add that they aren't being asked to build cheaper rides by making them shorter and with less tech. It's asking them to make cheaper rides by streamlining their process and being more efficient with the money given it sounds like.

Who gets cut from the process? They were probably brought in for a reason.
Per marni's reply to me:
"How WDI has a monopoly on TWDC park design? How endless meetings drag out time and resources?"

There are always ways to improve the process if you are consistently that far over budget. But you have to be willing to. WDI isn't.

Its not that there aren’t ways to improve, but that requires a high level of decision making and familiarity with the process. It’s a big issue of trust because bloat often starts for a reason and you have to overcome that reason. As things become more complex you need more specialists.

You know how skunk works black projects have over inflated budgets? How WDI has a monopoly on TWDC park design? How endless meetings drag out time and resources?

A good five years ago there was a remit from the board to reign in the costs. It’s not exactly worked yet.

@marni1971 Does the OLC have to pay these ridiculous costs for attractions at Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea?

Always a fun time here at the magic when the conversation turns to attacking a trusted poster with a decades long track record.

Also, if anyone has a DIS Financial Disclosure that breaks down individual attraction construction costs I'd love to see it. I've read every 10-K for the last decade and have yet to see one. Perhaps my eyesight isn't what it once was.

there's concern for wdi's relative spending - not only to itself, but also competitors - and that what the journey blue to open has become exacerbates the issue in multiple ways...
the quite likely result of an extended process in a powerful creative department which has been largely mishandled for many years by the brass of a super conglomerate focused mostly on fiscal quarters

Marni's insights are one of the prime reasons I visit this site, FWIW. His track record speaks for itself. Doubt him if you dare!

As for GOTG - isn't that grand, all that money for a ride based on a third-tier bunch of Marvel also-rans, and yet Mary Poppins MIGHT get a dinky carousel at best.

The OLC financials give a barometer of WDI costs (at retail): http://www.olc.co.jp/en/news/news_o...0/teaserItems1/00/linkList/0/link/pdfFile.pdf

Their retheming of Stormrider into Nemo Searider: ~$50 mil (= 1 Big Thunder investment brought to present $value)
Their new, platinum version of Soarin: ~$170 mil
Their current DL expansion (1 E-ticket ride, 1 big theater, 1 meet & greet, 1 whip ride, dining & retail): ~$700 mil

Yes, unbelievable is absolutely right. Your common sense comes in handy sometimes, doesn't it?

Personally, I'd bet it's actually about $100-$150M attraction or thereabouts. It's a tubular steel coaster bought from a third party in a giant box. Yes, they will dress it up with all kinds of effects, but at the end of the day how can that be more than Everest (even adjusted for inflation...) which is/was a tubular coaster in a huge themed 20 story high structure?

However, the more people believe that they are spending $300M, $400M, or heck why not say $1B on this coaster, the more interest and buzz it will draw.... regardless of what it actually cost. Marketing 101 friends. So yes, Disney benefits from these rumors and innuendos and they have no obligation to correct the record.

The reason you're wrong is that these numbers don't make it to the public at large. They don't know and they don't care. The big numbers might make a stink on Disney fan sites, but the people here are going to go (or not go, in the case of anti-Disney people) regardless of what the numbers are.

In other words, if you think the masses care what an attraction costs, I have a large bridge to sell you.

Its important to recognize that at least part of the reason that GotG even became a thing was because they were exempt from the Marvel-Universal deal. If they could, this would clearly be an Iron Man attraction. Heck, I could see them theming all of FW to the Stark Expo if they could.

Nah, just WoL would’ve been fine. It really wouldn’t be a bad fit either if they used the center of that pavilion to show off new tech from other big companies like how we saw in Iron Man 2’s Stark Expo but obviously smaller. Then of course use or demolish the old Body Wars area for a new ride and Cranium Command for a new show.

But of course this can’t be done. Oh well.
