Remind me again about the castle and a hurricane.

not true

Oh, please stop with the spires... they're welded on, and can't be removed unless you get a chainsaw. LOL

simply not true! They are removeable.

let me ask you this...................do you think the park was designed to be in CENTRAL FLORIDA without being prepared to deal with a Hurricane?

The spires are put on in a manner in which from the inside they can be detatched and removed.

Now are we talking about the Castle itself or the secret missle silo within the Castle....? 'Cause I'm sure it can sustain higher winds. :hammer:

They also have a SAM site in he Rainforest Cafe volcano

I would love to know what book it is. I took the Keys to the Kingdom tour and the guide said flat out that it is all one piece. Also if you call up WDW and ask them they will say no they can not be removed.

Also looking thru some of my books I came accross the book Since The World Began - Walt Disney World The First 25 Years and on page 35 last paragraph on the page it states and I quote "The 10 towering spiers, fabricated and finished in an old fertilizer factory about five miles away, were slid into place above the mian building and permanently attached (contrary to myth, the castle cannot be, nor has it ever been, dismantled in the event of a hurricane)." So I hope that puts this to rest, this book is was put out by Hyperion and even had a foreword by Roy E. Disney. Just to back it up.

Sorry to sound like a jerk about this but rumors get old after a while when you know they are false.

there is an elaborate hydraulics systems that allows the spires to be retracted inside the castle much like the telescoping antenna on your grandmothers cadillac.

No. Just No. All joking aside, the spires do not, for any reason, at all, have the ability to be removed. NO. Come on people, let's stop spreading mis-information. Jokes are fine, but they honest-to-gods don't come off. They even made a joke of how common it is that people fall for that on one of the Travel Channel specials.

I highly recommend that you take the word of the book already mentioned by Jerm, Since The World Began - Walt Disney World The First 25 Years, because both it, the WDW Behind the Scenes Travel Channel special, and anyone and everyone at WDW will tell you this is just an absurd rumor that won't die. It's why we make jokes about the missle silo and the aliens and such because it's in that catagory of just plain falsehoods.

Once again, THE SPIRES CAN NOT BE REMOVED.

1. My grandmother doesn't, and has never had, a cadillac.
2. There is no such system.
3. They can't be removed or retracted inside the castle. I have the castle blueprints. I know what is in the castle. There is no way you can take the spires off unless you use a chainsaw. Or maybe high pressure water. LOL. Laser?

You're darn right it was designed that way. The spires can withstand a hurricane right where they are, no need to remove them. And they can't be removed anyway. LOL

I agree! You are absolutely correct, the spires can not be removed. As niteobsrvr noted, they retract.

You obviously have the blueprints that are sold to the general public rather than the internal blueprints.

castle during hurricane

I will be at the Floridian Friday and Sat.
This storm is huge. Andrew type.

If parts of the castle can be removed (which I have heard the same thing) I will take whatever pics I can.

If it is possible at all, should be if the eye comes over the parks.

Wish us luck, my house is in Brevard. Sure hope it will be there. AT least I am going somewhere I can trust I will be as safe as possible.

Since The World Began IS a great book. I have it too. Like Jerm, I would be interested to know why Disney would print 2 books with conflicting information :veryconfu

Any ways if the spires could be taken off they would not even have the park reopened so people could see this little wonder....

well, i'd just like to say, that IF the spires can come off (which i'm pretty sure they don't), Disney is more than welcome to store them at my house :sohappy: (of course, we'll get hit with the storm shortly after orlando, but at least i'm offering!)

Hurricane Frances?

I apologize for being out of it, but where exactly is the hurricane right now? I haven't heard much about it in Oklahoma :zipit: , and I was just curious on the status and when the Floridians are to expect it.

If it has already been said, I am sorry, I couldn't find the thread :( . Thanks for the news. Is it much stronger than Charley?

44 days until we are the AKL :sohappy: :sohappy: :sohappy:

If the spires could be taken off by crane, it wouldn't make much sense. Think about how long it would take to get a crane in there, safely get the spires down, and get the crane out of there (or secured down) before the hurricane. The comment of "they didn't know how strong charley would be" is telling of the problem: By the time you know exactly where a hurricane is going and how strong it's going to be, you certainly don't have time to move a crane in. And they don't want to be popping the spires off every time a hurricane could "possibly" be threatening Central Florida.

Your post is too logical. The spires are balloons that can be deflated within minutes except, of course, for the main spire which houses the nuclear tipped warhead in a missile silo. If Frances comes too close, the top third of the main spire is blown clear and the warhead can be launched into the eye of the hurricane. The heat from the detonation will suck the oxygen from the storm and evaporate moisture within a 200 mile radius. Poof, no more Frances. :hammer:

Pass it on!
