Reflections of Earth improvements including new lasers

After re-watching, I have to say, I really wish they'd reconsider the flashing laser on the AA during "Home" (9:06-9:38 on the video). I found it immensely distracting, and hadn't noticed it when watching the video on my phone. Just the stagnant lasers was much more powerful before, in my opinion. That moment in the show (9:06) for those who don't know, is when an astronaut in space looks at Earth and realizes we are all one, we all share the same "home". Extremely powerful moment, that - again in my opinion, doesn't need to be emphasized with a rave laser show.
I think that is an illusion. It looks like its flashing due to a mismatch in the capture rate of the camera and refresh rate if the laser. I believe that when the laser is working correctly (none of the videos so far show this part well) it will look to be static, as it did with the old laser.

Japan lost audio lastnight. You could hear someone speaking instead. Wrong channel?
Heard about that. Japan is having issues, it seems. And what was heard over the loud speaker was seemingly the crew for the show... attempting to troubleshoot.

A good point, here. The laser shouldn't be moving... just projecting. The old effect was a fairly static "fan" that just shone out beams of light, which was perfect for the score/message that is being expressed at the moment.

That said, the new laser's colors in that moment ARE quite nice... they just need to be slowed down.

whoa, crossed messages. Good point. Hope you're right. That part of the show needs a calmer effect.

Agreed. The show thrives on subtlety. This is one of those deeply impactful moments that the show has and flashing lasers isn't right for that. The 'fan' of beams and colors is.

Hopefully it's just what the camera is picking up, though.

I was there that night, and now twice since the new AA laser went in and it indeed appears a camera refresh rate issue and nothing more. It's a fan of solid beams...and when the white waterfall shells burst, they slowly change colors, but remain solid beams through it.

That is great news!

Great. The full spectrum rainbow from the fan must be lovely.

I was standing there too with my family. First time we have ever seen RoE without music...very different. 2 maintenance crew were behind us on their walkies saying guys your being heard...

Is it just me, or is the entire recording of Let There Be Peace on Earth different? It doesn't sound like the Harlem Boys Choir and it seems to be missing the organ at the end. The new version just seems too overtly cutesy and schmaltzy (like the Wishes kids chorus), where the old one was more dignified and traditional

I don't mind the new narrator, but her intonation makes it clear that the show is aiming for a very young audience. I think the introductions of each language cheapens the experience, and it seems even more odd that France's intro was cut if they rerecorded the song (though the various international greetings appear unchanged)

Yes, as noted by serveral people the musical recording is different. I prefer the previous version as it feels more grand. The new version is certainly sounds more "Disney" in its harmonization and tone.

At 8:41 - 8:57ish, listen to a woman, even back in 2000, being impressed with the lasers during "Home". Ironically there's no fireworks at that moment in the show, (glitch or lack of supply?) but regardless, still obviously an incredible moment for the new show!

Just a note about the video. The new lasers do appear to flicker more than the old ones in person, and this was amplified even more in the video. It was shot at 60fps which appears to have captured a lot more of the flicker than at 30fps.

^^^ Perhaps this is a question more suited of a scientist, but why would the newer lasers flicker more in real life and on the screen? @wdwmagic

Glad to hear they have dumbed down another narration for today's audiences.

Part of me agrees with this, part of me doesn't. I can see where the announcements of the languages and nations would be pandering to a less subtle audience, but at the end of the day, is it really? It's merely labeling and shows the breadth of diversity there? Heck, it could even be 'teaching' people the sounds and intonations of the different languages. That's slightly EPCOTian, to me.

Did they say anything interesting about the show? hahah. Any tech-y terms?

Oh wow. A week after soft openings and the day after the debut of the Millennium Celebration. ROE even had a glitch back then.

And goodness, those lasers are pretty. And those 'first time' reactions are really cool to see. Really liked that the guy next to the camera either read up about the show or grasped the symbolism of everything. :)

ItS down to refresh rate vs shutter speed. Refresh rate being how fast the beam is redrawn. If the camera shutter speed matches the refresh it's more solid. If they don't match or miss match you get flicker.

Same way some cameras can record a film projection and it's fine and others flicker horribly. Depends on the frames per second and shutter settings vs the film speed.

I don't like that it's kids singing the chorus, but other than that, I have no complaints. Well, I guess it would have been cool to have a new celebrity voice.

I'm not completely sold on that either. It doesn't help that, as was pointed out by a previous poster, it has been "Disneyfied" so the voices are overly harmonized and auto-tuned.

On the whole I do like the new audio, but between the high pitched kids and the omission of France during the languages, it needs some tweaking.

Those new lasers are just as visible on video as the original Illuminations lasers, I sure hope they add more affects and we get more laser time thru out the show.
