Governor DeSantis was asked about this topic at a press conference regarding an unrelated matter today, and it seems as though the proposal has his support, but not for "payback" against Disney purposes. He said: “There are certain entities that have exerted a lot of influence through corporate means to generate special privileges in the law,” DeSantis said. “I don’t think we should have special privileges in the law at all.”

He also clarified that he has given Disney special treatment during his time as governor, but seems to regret it: "The one time they got something when I’ve been Governor was that Big Tech carve-out,” DeSantis said. “That was wrong at the time, and it should be repealed.” (hyperlink in the quote is my own, for those who wish to learn more about Disney's involvement in that legislation)

I think we will know how this is going to play out by next Monday. I’m guessing the news cycle will move onto the next thing.

If this is still being talked about on Monday then Disney has stepped in it.

As far as how Disney Fans are taking all this?

Who knows. I called my favorite DVC reseller.

They said they have never seen so many sales coming to market.

However he did say that so far for ever seller, there has been a buyer.

There is just no way Disney and Florida decide to go to war. It’s too destructive for both parties.

Maybe. But I don't know that there's a face-saving outcome for either. It's been ramped up where one side is calling the other hateful bigots, and the other side responds by calling the others groomers. Not to get into the semantics of either of these terms, but those are tough positions to retreat from.

On the Disney side you have a new and embattled CEO who everyone - internally, on Wall Street, and just about everywhere - watching to see how he navigates this. He has a not inconsiderable coalition of people who are pressuring Disney - given its outsized position in American culture - to "weigh in" on the side of progressives. After some dissatisfaction with the company's role, the company has since said it is taking aggressive steps to oppose the legislation.

That action, in turn, has provoked pushback from the governor and legislature, who have passed/signed the legislation and are forced to defend it. Many of those stakeholders have higher aspirations, and feel they must make a strong show of support to demonstrate the bona fides.

Ancillary to all of this is the reactive blowback from right-of-center types who don't like the direction of the company, and other legislators who are wanting to reassess the company's corporate welfare/cronyism type of benefits the company enjoys.

It's a tremendous mess, but I don't see a JFK-in-the-Cuban-Missile-Crisis like figure who can navigate the company through this. Though, surely Zenia Mucha is trying her hardest to remind us who that person would've been.

This is a loophole. It doesn’t restrict speech. It doesn’t even technically involve the party whose speech is disliked as that legal separation between Disney and the District is important to maintain.

Ever heard of Dr Venable Memorial Park? It’s a park outside St. Louis. Dr. Venable was a black man who purchased two lots in a neighborhood. The existing white neighbors were successful in pushing out other potential black residents through a variety of means but they couldn’t get Dr. Venable. He paid cash for his property so he owned it free and clear. Eventually the city took his property by eminent domain and turned it into a park. This was clearly done because of Dr. Venable’s skin color but it was allowed because cities are allowed to take land to build parks.
This is a good example, but I bet Dr. Venable didn't have a $200+ billion market cap

Maybe. But Disney threw the first punch. Individuals can certainly disagree with any legislation. But they decided to weigh in as a company against the State of Florida. Florida Legislators took notice. And here we are.
They are legally allowed to do that. The Supreme Court has already ruled they have a first amendment right to weigh in just the same as any individual.

Because you have the legal right to do something does not mean that it is a wise decision to do so. There are many things that are legal that I would advise individuals and businesses against doing. It was not a smart business move on Disney's part.

And that’s a perfectly valid argument. It’s a business move that could likely alienate some customers and impact relations with politicians.

However, that doesn’t justify government retaliation.

Yes, No government anything. Bob does just fine shooting himself in the foot every opportunity he gets.

As I think more about this, another potential consequence for Florida doing this is that the state might not be trusted now to keep its word on offers of business incentives when they run afoul of a politician's stances.

One of many reasons I'd absolutely shocked if it actually happens. It could have serious detrimental effects on Florida's ability to attract business.

I’d much prefer semi decent characters save the day…if we’re gonna go that route
Well, Obi-Wan, Yoda, Luke, Han, and Leia are dead, so…

This is serious third world ****.
Or Georgia level stuff...

This kind of saber rattling is nothing new. Like I said before, the state can giveth, the state can taketh.. and it's really the most direct tie between the state house and businesses.

This kind of noise happens everytime deals need to be renewed too.. as not all incentive deals are perpetual.

Can I laugh at the absurdity of this quote or will I get yelled at? 🤔

The guy has a huge ego and zero self-awareness, I'll give him that.
