Re: The "If I have to hug one more princess" Universal ads

Universal knows, as does the rest of the world, that they pale in comparison to WDW. I am going to WDW for 7 days in January, and was thinking about going over for a day to check out the mummy and ride spiderman, but after seeing that commercial, i'm pretty sure me and my family are going to sit tight at WDW.

Can someone explain to me why Disney's most recent additions have been some of the most thrilling rides they've created? Disney isn't quite a confident in their product as you guys seem to think, otherwise they wouldn't have put those attractions in. They are afraid of losing some people to Universal.

If you want to talk about commercials that directly diss the competition.....the current Pepsi commercials slam Diet Coke. I dont see how they get away with it.

Universal: " QUICK!! Make up some lame commercials! I think disney might have a winner with Expedition Everest!"

No, they like to appease people with new, inovative, and thrilling rides. It's a family park and alot of families enjoy thrill rides.

You can try to tell yourself that, but a lot of it had to do with those families spending a few days over at Universal getting their thrill fix.

Is it really that big of a crime for Universal to advertise the way they want to? They are not Disney so why should their commercials be similar? Does it really matter?

Universal has a lot to offer in its two theme parks. Both are amazing and well done and do not receive the credit they deserve.

I know...its so unfair for Disney to have all that fun stuff to do and Universal have its two six flags style experiences.....just unfair.

Their parks are run-down, rides are constantly breaking or dirty. Staff are rude and uneducated when it comes to customer service.

Right. Universal is by no means Disney-quality, however, it still has exciting attractions and many things to offer.

I do enjoy Spider-man and The Mummy. But when it comes down to it, you don't see commercials coming from disney dissing Universal. So the funny part is watching Universal making fun of a company who everybody knows would beat them in any theme park building challenge.

I still cannot believe the ignorance on this site at times. Universal and WDW are obviously two very different creatures. Universal is aiming more to teens and twenty somethings, Disney is, and has always aimed for the families with young children. Just like how you wouldn't advertise a rap album by playing random smooth jazz music, you can't appeal to a group seeking action and adventure by showing them relaxing, charming pictures of a beautiful park, you need to turn up the volume a few notches, and make something that gets your attention. Universal ISN'T doing as well as they would like, everyone knows that, but people forget that Disney has a 30+ year lead on them, and has been in the market of Orlando for about 16 years longer than Universal.

Universal's effort has been amazing, and the park would be WORLD RENOWNED if it was anywhere else but Orlando. The Universal Florida resort blows the Disneyland Resort out of the water by far, and is better than any regional park by ten fold.

You can't go to Universal expecting to go to Disney, they are two COMPLETELY different experiences. While service is often lacking at Universal, and themeing isn't quite at the Disney level, they are still awesome parks, and are giants in thier fields.

Actually, you're right...

...which is why Universal should stop trying to compare themselves to Disney, and should just specialize in what they do best: thrill rides. Universal doesn't offer much for young children, but that isn't a bad thing. Everyone knows that WDW is huge and offers much more for families to do, and Universal's insisting to beat Disney makes them look immature and ridiculous.

It's like a small monkey trying to convince us that it's just as strong as a gorilla!

In talking to Guests who have visited both resorts, I've found that the majority of them tend to view WDW and Universal as separate resorts with separate purposes, not head-on competition. I'm willing to bet that most of the nationwide opinion slants the same way.

EDIT: With the exception of Spiderman, I personally find Universal to be boring and barely more exciting than a Six Flags (which costs a lot less). RotM was the biggest disappointment I experienced all year. However, I know that there are many more valid opinions than my own; and since I'm a Disney CM, I'm a little biased!

This is where I have to disagree with you. Disney has been putting in Thrill rides for a long time, SM is a perfect example. Yea, they've built some thrilling rides, but try not to forget that they still have been adding attractions that are more, "Their product" as you put it. Some that come to mind right away are, Philharmagic, Turtle Talk with Crush, Soarin', SGE(yea, it sucks, but it is not thrill ride by any stretch), Wishes, and Cinderellabration, and thats just at WDW.

I have to say that I am a complete Disney Fan, but I don't dislike Universal either. I think that Spiderman is the best ride I have ever been on, but I definately agree that Universal is lacking in its atmosphere as a whole. I just feel different when I walk in either of the parks.

I realize that both parks have different things to offer to different families, but neither park needs to take cheap shots at the other. Especially when the comments are incorrect or misleading. I would definately be disappointed if Disney responded in commercial form.

The funniest part about it is that most nights the Disney parks (except AK) are open much later than the US and IOA. Tonight for example MK closes at 10:00, Epcot at 9:00, and MGM at 8:30 all with a firework show at closing. While both IOA and US will be closing at:

Wait for the irony-

7:00. With no fireworks.

Makes you wonder what they were thinking when they made that commercial.

And to further prove your point:

Recently (March 25, 2006) we attended a cheerleading competition at IoA. The park closed at 6:00pm. We were done competing at 1:30pm and my family headed over to MK which was open until midnight. When we got there we still had 10 hours to enjoy in the park. In this case it was Universal (both parks) who closed before 7pm the entire weekend.

Would the "going to bed at 7pm" jibe not have more to do with the image of young children going to bed early? Lame, well-behaved 'Disney' kids have their bedtime early, signifying the Disney experience, where as the more rebellious, cool 'Universal' kids do what they want?

Kinda how I perceived it...but hey, I'm not advertising executive!

I don't hate Universal, it does have some really good coasters and old favorites - BUT I hate that gag if I gotta hug a princess commercial.

We normally go to WDW for 5 days in December. We take turns going to US, IOA or Sea World every other year. We normally go to one of these parks and then head back to our resort so we can go to MVMCP. I enjoy visiting Universal, plus it makes me love Disney even more.

Wear Disney merchandise to Universal and see their reaction to that. About 4 years ago, my daughter was wearing a sweatshirt with Mickey on it. When we went thru the turnstiles - two men stepped in front of her and said "sorry we can't let you in here with that rat on your shirt". I said the "rat" is what made your parks possible. They had no reply. A couple more times that day negative remarks were made about her sweatshirt. It was annoying because it upset her.

When I wore a Scooby-Doo sweatshirt to MK no one said a word.......

You know what this rivalry loosely reminds me of?

The "a$$-pen" episode of Southpark.

Disney commercials are Stan and Universal commercials are Tad.

"Stan Marsh? More like....Stan Darsh! Ha, ha, ha, ha!" - Tad
"OK, whatever dude?" - Stan
"Ooooooooooooh, sounds like Stan Darsh wants to challenge me." - Tad
"No, I don't." - Stan
"Fine then, I'll race you on the K-13." - Tad
"Uh, that's OK, I don't really want to race." - Stan
"Buck, buck, buck, buckaw....Chicken!!" - Tad

(Sorry, couldn't resist!)

I'm sitting at home taking a "sick day", reading about Disney and watching Sportscenter. So it doesn't get much better than this. However, it seems the Disney fanatics on this thread are going a little overboard. You're taking it like someone is pling fun at your child. It's a joking commercial. I've been to disney around 9 times in the last 7 years and every time I do Universal/IOA as well. They're different parks. As people have stated, Disney is more tame and Universal is a thrill park. If you don't like Universal, who cares....there's no need to bash them or the people who visit that park. That's like me screaming at someone who doesn't like steak. What's the point. I will say though, at night City Walk is much better than Downtown disney....but it gets kind of "ghetto" at night. Not a fan of it but it's more fun and has MUCH better restaurants. That's my opinion. No need for people to flip out....everyone is entitled to there own people. :p

The interesting thing is that while most of us think that the commercials aren't very productive (myself included)...here we are talking about them....
