$ THE MISSING DOLLAR RIDDLE $

Three friends check into a motel for the night and the clerk tells them the bill is $30, payable in advance. So, they each pay the clerk $10 and go to their room. A few minutes later, the clerk realizes he has made an error and overcharged the trio by $5. He asks the bellhop to return $5 to the 3 friends who had just checked in. The bellhop sees this as an opportunity to make $2 as he reasons that the three friends would have a tough time dividing $5 evenly among them; so he decides to tell them that the clerk made a mistake of only $3, giving a dollar back to each of the friends. He pockets the leftover $2 and goes home for the day! Now, each of the three friends gets a dollar back, thus they each paid $9 for the room which is a total of $27 for the night. We know the bellhop pocketed $2 and adding that to the $27, you get $29, not $30 which was originally spent. Where did the other dollar go????

  have fun

"How many letter are there in the alphabet?"

or 7, depending upon what you mean (7 distinct letters of the alphabet appear in the words "the alphabet" -- thealpb)

If, having only one match, on a freezing winter day, you entered a room which contained a lamp, a kerosene heater, and a wood burning stove, which should you light first.

OK, it's been a while since I've heard this one, so I might not get all the details in place perfectly...

A chicken perched on top of a farmhouse lays an egg, which rolls to her left and lands on the ground a few feet south of the house. She then lays another, which rolls to her right and hits the ground a few feet to the south.

What in the Sam Hill is going on?

is the farmhouse located on the equator? When it falls to one side...it's on the south side of the house...but when it falls to the other...it's on the south of the Earth?

If the farmhouse is basically a sqaure and located exactly at the north pole, then any eggs that fall and extend out from the house would be "south" of the house.

BUT. A chicken could never lay an egg at the north pole standing upon a house in the first place. It is too cold.

And... why the heck would a farmhouse be there? To feed Santa's Elves? maybe a hydroponic farmhouse *shrugs*

Since the north pole is a ludicrous idea.

Occam's razor has come into play for me on this and the simplest answer is the first egg was laid while the chicken faced west laid the egg... then turned 180 degrees, faced east and laid another.

Or... the farmhouse was of the southern mississippi variety (i.e. it was a mobile home) and was being moved while the chicken was laying eggs...

There are too many answers to this one.

Well, as I recall, the North Pole was the correct answer, although it may not have been a chicken laying the eggs there (like I said, been a while); the eggs may have just been dropped from the top some other way, but very creative answers anyway.
