Rained like mad at WDW today

The weather here in Ohio has been really weird too. Normally this time of year its 90 and humid.. todays high was 76... flipping loved it... We had rain off and on today but nothing like Florida is getting. They need the rain. It is so sad to see it so dry down there. It should be lush and green!

I too am from Ohio. Supposedly the weather here is going to be cooler than normal for June and July.

This storm was on Saturday and it lasted a good hour at the Magic Kingdom with very heavy rain, lots of wind, and extremely dangerous lightning. Lightning struck in the park numerous times and across the property. Big Thunder Mountain, Astro Orbiter, Carousel of Progress, and many other high points did get struck by lightning. The storm hit around 3:15pm to 3:30pm. This storm was not part of the Tropical Storm that hit on Thursday. All outdoor attractions went down due to lightning including:

-WDW Railroad
-Astro
-Speedway
-Dumbo
-Barnstormer
-Casey Jr
-Riverboat
-TSI
-Big Thunder
-Splash Mt
-Aladdin
-Jungle Cruise
-Swiss Family

Due to the torential downpour that lasted a while other attractions had to close because their exits were blocked with people taking shelter. The following attractions had to close then for this reason:

-Monsters
-Buzz
-CoP
-TTA
-Pooh
-Teacups
-Enchanted Tales
-Mermaid
-Prince Charming
-Phillharmagic
-Mansion
-Country Bear
-Tiki Room

Lightning also caused some issues at some attractions where it messed with the ride computer systems:

-Astro (remained closed the rest of the evening)
-TTA (remained closed until late evening the next day)
-CoP ( but reopened later in the evening)
-Big Thunder (only operated one station at opening the next day)

Other attractions had issues with flooding or other ride downtimes not related specifically to the storm. At the height of the storm, almost all attractions in the Magic Kingdom were down or affected in some way. Frontierland didn't have a single attraction open and Tomorrowland suffered the worse once the storm had passed.

I was at the MK on Saturday, camped out under the merchant of venus awning just down from SGE. The rain came in waves, the lightning cracked, and the wind blew. Water was above stroller wheels, people were fording the water in ECV's and leaving a wake that lapped up near my feet :eek: Not the worst rain I have witnessed but it was a good gully washer.

This is Florida and systems are made to take care of the heavy rains we get on a daily basis. However there is NO system in the world that can handle 5+ inches of water in an hour or two. Where I live one area actually had 11 inches of rain Thursday to Sat. causing washouts and flooding along retention ponds.
Retention ponds are areas where water drains to in heavy rains. If you buy a home and the realtor says it had a lake view make sure it is not a retention ponds as they can look like lakes in the summer but empty in the winter.
As for the flooding it is not just the system in the park but where the water ends up. All over Florida there are retention ponds when the water gets high in them it just stops/slows the run off up stream just a cascading effect.

Saturday night was particularly bad, I agree -- I have been at the World in rainy weather, cold weather, tornado-warning weather, and heatstroke weather -- but I have never seen what I saw on Saturday night when it just started pouring at 3pm and didn't cease until well after midnight...I was on my way back from DHS and the busses of course were overpacked as folks fled out of the park so it took two busses until I could squeeze on, waiting in the pouring rain the entire time. Upon return to POFQ, the entire path system (rue de Baga!) was under about an inch of water, maybe more -- I was wearing flipflops and the depth came up over my foot when crossing the street. I didn't even bother going out later -- ordered pizza to the room, and watched a couple baseball games on tv. Luckily, Sunday was better again --

We were at Epcot Saturday for most of the day and the weather was great. Then decided to hit the pool late afternoon before heading over to DHS for the evening. Needless to say, the rain interrupted both our swimming and DHS time. That system just parked over the area and dumped on us for a while. We were planning to catch the Hyperspace Hoopla that night, and kept debating whether to go as we watched the radar. Thankfully we bailed as it was eventually cancelled. Hit Beaches & Cream and watched the resort movie indoors. Made up for it the next night tho!

Ironically, the tropical storm affected us less on Thursday at MK than that downpour on Saturday at DHS. We were at SWW and got rained out of our Jedi Training and meeting characters. :( Hyperspace Hoopla still went on, but I don't remember if they cancelled Fantasmic.

A rainstorm hit us on Tuesday June 11 @ MK. We got in line for HM just as it hit ( 40 minute wait), and then went over to IASW ( 40 minute wait). I was laughing so hard. The rain was pouring and I couldn't even see!:D We had fun though.;) Barnstormer had been stopped @ the top because some idiot had stood up on the ride. The fire department had to escort people off the ride!:eek: We went into Pete's Silly Side Show to meet Donald & Goofy.:) We rode Peoplemover ( had to wait 15 minutes for that!).:eek: We never go to Buzz ( 75 minute wait).:eek: Didn't do the Speedway ( line around the corner 50 minute wait).:eek: Laugh Floor was a 20 minute wait ( not bad). Then we ate @ The Plaza Restaurant. By that time the rain had ended, and they were busy cleaning off the tables and using the squeegie for the grounds to get ready for the dessert party! It was a madhouse!:eek:
45 minute wait for JC ( during the Light Parade).!:eek: My boys rode carpets 3 times though.:) We rode pirates ( no wait) and went over to Splash ( rode during Wishes- no wait).:) We closed down the park w/ 2 rides on BTMRR.:D
Overall, I was surprised at the amount of people who just stayed through the rainstorm. I guess though it was our favorite day. The other days, there were no rainstorms just lots of heat, humidity, and crowds!:eek: We were there June 9-14.

We were at Magic Kingdom on that Saturday and stood under CoP, which was closed and being used as a shelter from the storm. The TTA, Astro Orbiter, and CoP were all struck by lightning within ten minutes of each other. TTA was evacuated, but because it was raining so hard and the entire area was a good four inches deep with water, the people stayed on the exit ramp for at least thirty minutes. When CoP opened back up, the audio wasn't working and a few AAs were twitchy. Later that night I talked to a cast member at TTA who said Big Thunder and Haunted Mansion were struck by lightning and Mansion had flooded, and that the damage to the TTA was severe enough that they had to wait until third shift to work on it. That night I rode Space Mountain twice, which still had the emergency lights on for the TTA, which was a nice surprise for us.

We had ressies at CRT for dinner one night long ago and it was sprinkling when we arrived, we tried to check in and they told us we had to wait 10 more minutes or so, by the time we checked in it was so crowded you could not move in there and then we couldn't get to the door when they called us in to eat. After the meal it was still pouring rain, up past our ankles and we went and rode PP and IASM, HM and POTC, one right after the other with no wait, it was a fun day despite the weather!

I was there that day. I watched the video but didn't see myself...that would have been cool. I was wearing a bright pink poncho so I did stand out a bit in the sea of yellow.

Normally the crowds "cease and desist" during a rainstorm. But for some reason, no one was leaving the parks at all, and the lines were crazy long!:eek: This was last week.

I was there that Saturday! We were in PhillarMagic when it hit and had ponchos with us but the lightning kept us inside the gift store for a while. Then cast members came out and told us we could all go back into the theater. I told my husband that they must know something we don't know so we went back in. They did Disney trivia for a while and then it turned into really obscure Disney trivia and my husband couldn't handle it anymore. By this time the lightning was in the distance so we put on our ponchos and wadded through the water to the buses.

There was so much flooding that the buses had been stopped temporarily but before too long they were coming through again. Definitely an adventure.
