Just curious... did you have to work today? Is "Veterans Day" a paid holiday or just a holiday but everybody has to work as normal?

Maria,

Actually, yesterday, November 11th was officially "Veteran's Day". However, I live near a large military base, therefore we "honor" our military veteran's with a day off. Our schools close because the base designated today as the "Veteran's Day Holiday" and that would give people family time together. Everyplace doesn't do this. I work for our local school system and we try to schedule school holidays around the "federal/national" holidays for the sake of our military personnel and their families. We believe that family time is important also.

I did enjoy a day off from work today and since that made it a three day weekend, I went out of town shopping!! What else is a girl to do when they were doing maintenance on the sight anyways. :D

Thank you very much! So you are saying, that not everybody gets a day off, and there is no official "day off" for veterans day? It is not a mandatory day off, right?

It all depends on your employer....I was lucky enough to get a PAID day off....which is rare...especially for the company I work for...

My friends however who work for a rival company.....didn't get to stay home....

U.S. Holidays

There are 10 "official" U.S. holidays:

1. New Year's Day, January 1
2. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday, 3rd Monday in January
3. President's Day, 3rd Monday in February
4. Memorial Day, last Monday in May
5. Independence Day, July 4
6. Labor Day, 1st Monday in September
7. Columbus Day, 2nd Monday in October
8. Veterans Day, November 11
9. Thanksgiving Day, 4th Thursday in November
10. Christmas Day, December 25

Please notice that 5 of the holidays fall on Mondays. The real dates of the holidays have been changed so that workers can get 3 days off (i.e. Sat., Sun. & Mon.). Also, when the other five holidays that have fixed dates (such as Veterans Day, November 11) fall on a "normal" day off (Sat. & Sun.) then the holiday switches to a Monday or a Friday so as to again allow workers another 3 day holiday. Holidays in the U.S. have been changed around over the years to benefit the federal work force. Employers don't have to give workers time off for any of these holidays although in most companies you get some sort of premium pay if you work a holiday. Hope this helps you Maria.

I work for a company that only offers 6 paid holidays - NY Day, Memorial Day, Indepedence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas - so I was at work today. We didn't get mail today and the banks were closed. I was so busy today, I didn't even realize today was a holiday until I got home from work. What holidays do you get off from work in Mexico?

We have holidays by law and if you work on those days, you are paid double or triple (if it is on a sunday), and also some religious holidays that are not mandatory, but most of the companies give you the day off.

The mandatory days off are:

January 1st
February 5th - Constitution Day
March 21st - Benito Juarez´s Birth
May 1st - Labor Day
September 16th - Independence Day
November 20th - Revolution Day
December 1st - only every 6 years when we change President
December 25th - Christmas

The religious holidays I can think of now are:

Easter, of course; we get Holy Thursday and "Good Friday" (?) off.
November 1st and 2nd - All Saints Day
December 12th - Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe

Mexico sure sounds like a lot of fun! Of course, I would volunteer to work on the holidays so I could get the triple pay! :)

hehehe... it is fun! And we always find the chance to turn a mandatory holiday into a long weekend holiday! :D

I volunteered for those holidays in a sunday too! When I worked for Hyatt, I volunteered to work on January 1st as it is one of the if not the slowest and most quiet day of the year! ;)

Just thought you guys might be interested to know that in the UK we call Veterens day, Rememberance Day. The services are always held on a Sunday hence Rememberance Sunday but suprisingly we don't get any time off work.
Our Bank Holidays are:
1st January New Years Day
Good Friday
Easter Monday
May Day Holiday(1st Monday in May)
Spring Bank Holiday (Whitsun)
Summer Bank Holiday (last Monday in August)
Christmas Day
Boxing Day (26th Dec)

Summer 2002 we will get extra one to celebrate the Queen's golden jubilee.

Lots of firms also give 2 extra days. :sohappy: :sohappy: to make a total of 10 paid bank holidays.

Where I work, we don't get some of the "official" holidays, but to make up for it, we get the week between Christmas and New Year's off as a paid holiday....that, I just love....leaves so much time to have fun.... ;)

As a teacher, I get a lot of paid days off.... But my school had classes yesterday. I was disappointed. ;) It was one less day I could spend in Disney!

Some schools had Veteran's Day off. But we have a half day of school next Wednesday and next Thursday and Friday off for Thanksgiving...plus we were off last Thursday and Friday for the teachers convention.... I can't complain. :)

Sorry Tramp, it isn't what you are thinking. Just to be boring the reason is :-

The day after Christmas Day is known as Boxing Day, after the tradition of opening the alms boxes placed in churches
over the Christmas season. The contents were distributed amongst the poor of the parish. December 26 is also known
as the Feast of St Stephen. It is often a day of outdoor sports and horse racing and hunting. Only in the last century
however has it become a holiday. By having Christmas Day and Boxing Day as holidays this allowed many people to
take trips but also rejoin family members, which may have encouraged the tradition of families getting together at
Christmas time.

We have 'boxing day' here too...it's also the day after Christmas...everyone boxes up their ugly gifts and returns them to the store for cold, hard cash.:hammer:
