So people trying to end a pandemic are tyrants. Interesting view.I applaud the Sheriff of LA and employees of Southwest Airlines for standing up to the tyrants.
Latinx is used interchangeably with Latino/ Latin@, but the actual best alternative to Latino is Latine, because E is the gender-neutral letter in Spanish. As a neologism, it's okay. I liked it a lot at first because it reminded me of the X-Men, but Latine actually makes more sense. Latin people, in general, have issues getting rid of gendered language and gender roles, to toxic levels, because it's what they've based their entire identity on and any deviation from that is the end of the world. Any threat to the machismo of any kind directly threatens them...some....how? Latine at least cites its origins from actual Spanish-speaking LGBTQIA+, gender non-binary people. I think it's a nice way for people who existed pre-Colonization to reclaim their identity and assert their Latin-ness, etc. Spanish is a very masculine-leaning language, and I can see how (and agree with) people who want to push back against it if they don't fit into those parameters. I prefer Latine because it makes more grammatical sense (if that makes sense).
Latin people hate change. They hate it to an absurd degree, and whether or not it makes sense to hold onto whatever it is they act like it's all canonical law, when much of the time, they have no idea why they're even doing it.
Anyway, any update on the Magic Mountain policy?

Like I said, Latin people hate change more than most. It absolutely does not affect her, and because it pushes back ever so slightly against ~the canonical law~, it's the downfall of everything. (Mexico just recognized its Black citizens on its census in 2015, for crying out loud.) If she doesn't want to use it, no one is making her, but notice how so many Mexican/ Latin people REFUSE to budge even a teensy bit to be ever so slightly more inclusive to other people in their community. Latine comes from the community, and I am glad it exists. If I can make anybody feel more safe and welcome, I'll do that. (Not to diss your friend, I am sure she's a very, very nice lady, but this is part of larger cultural conversations that need to happen within the community--just look at how much push back Selena got back in the day as a female Tejano singer and now she's considered one of the greats. I hope that makes sense!)The three people at the dinner party certainly did hate the made up word "Latinx".
One of the women who spoke most loudly against it I am familiar with her entire life story and she's a good friend; she grew up as a first generation American in east LA, a daughter of working class Mexican immigrants. She studied hard and got a full ride scholarship to Whittier College in the late 60's and around 1970 she met a cute boy at a college party, and that boy ended up becoming both her husband and a successful heart surgeon at Mission Hospital. She is full-blooded Chicano and absolutely railed against "these snotty white college kids" who have created a word out of thin air that makes no gramattical or cultural sense to describe her.
As the snotty white college kids also say, that is her "lived experience" and "her truth". And as @Heppenheimer so nicely explained, it solves a problem that never existed. But if you can use it in a sentence in an HR meeting you get to pretend that you are very cool!

@Heppenheimer can I ask, do you speak Spanish? Are you a native Spanish speaker, or did you learn it later? which dialect do you speak if you do?English only retains rare vestiges of grammatical gender, and the English use of the term "Latino" was already effectively gender neutral. "Latinx" attempts to solve a problem that didn't exist.
"Latino" is also far from the only gendered word borrowed from another language that became gender neutral in English.
First off, we are talking about the same Sheriff that has his own secret police as being the guy standing up to tyrants, right? The same Sheriff who has active gangs running around in his own department is the guy you're caping for? You can't fire the guy because it's an elected position, but he ran as a liberal but shifted hard right since his election, and I'd guess he's not winning reelection when this comes around (though that hasn't stopped him from retaliating against the people looking to run against him!).I applaud the Sheriff of LA and employees of Southwest Airlines for standing up to the tyrants.

All of this is coming off the heels of research that shows that people talk a big game about quitting rather than complying with mandates, but few actually do.

I don't follow LA politics that closely, but it seems that the County Sherrif up there ran as a moderate Democrat and still is a moderate Democrat by historical standards. The issue is that the LA political machine is now made up of not just liberal Democrats, but openly Socialist and Marxist politicians like Ridley-Thomas or Gascon. Karl Marx circa 1850 guys, not Bill Clinton circa 1998 guys.
If a moderate Democrat is talking to an openly Marxist politician, that moderate Democrat will seem "hard right". But that doesn't actually make the moderate Democrat "hard right", it just means he's dealing with a Marxist nutjob.
Was the research from "experts"?
Records were set in August on Americans quitting their jobs. 4.3 Million. September's numbers come out in a few weeks, but it doesn't seem to be slowing down.

As for LA County and their increasingly segregated business community, I do have to wonder how long they keep this up for. There are some demographics in LA County that are only 55% vaccinated, so do those folks drive south to OC or east to Riverside for dinner, entertainment, a trip to the mall, etc.?
I donβt see how this mandate is going to be enforced by people at stores, restaurants etc. But if it is, Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley (both Ventura County), Pasadena and Orange County are all a hop, skip and a jump away. Iβm sure LA County will love the repercussions on the local economy.
This shows my southern bias, but I often forget about Ventura County. Oops!
And I even had family up in Santa Barbara County that I would visit often before they passed. Although Santa Barbara is really the beginning of Central California. But Ventura County is lovely, and I would often stop at that outlet mall near Camarillo and dinner at Lure seafood restaurant going to/from Santa Barbara.
And what is the situation with Pasadena? Are they opting out of the LA County mandates because they have their own health authority?
Is their health authority like Berkeley 's? (Not being facetious, I am genuinely asking. )This shows my southern bias, but I often forget about Ventura County. Oops!

Isn't technology great?AN UPDATE: my state record of my vaccinated status has been updated, but I still can't access it. I advise all my fellow Californians to check their online status. Good thing I got my lil card lol lol lol
Spectacular. I had to upload the pics of my vaxx card and ID from my phone twice. Finally accepted it. They sent me a text today telling me it was updated. Then tell me I don't exist in the system..commmmmeeee onnnnnnnnnnnnnnIsn't technology great?

I don't eat out at restaurants or go to bars or anything, so I never thought about having to show vaccination proof, but potentially showing it to go to Disneyland? That's a whole different story.
