Preferred parking comes to Disney Springs from June 1

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't RCID heavily involved in financing the construction and ownership of the parking garages? Given that they were built with "public" funds (to the degree that RCID is a government), it seems like it would be a bait-and-switch to build them under the premise of being free, and then charging a year or two later. Realistically, I can't see them charging for the garages any time soon, especially with a third one on the way

I assume Disney fully owns and operates the surface lots themselves, right? Or at the very least, the RCID investment has sufficiently depreciated since they were built 20+ years ago. That would make it much easier for Disney to adjust (and profit from) pricing for those areas, and likely why they were chosen for "preferred" parking, even though they're not as convenient for most people

So Dolphin, Swann, Waldorf Astoria Bonnet Creek - all at the bottom? Guess no-one ever rebooks those properties. They've been doing this for years..
I've stayed at most of these properties & will continue to do so when I get a good deal. (Haven't stayed at the Waldorf as it always seemed a little pricey especially after the resort & parking fees.). That being said, I can find a Disney moderate at a lower price point after the "plus plus" is added most of the time. If the price between one of the above mentioned properties and a moderate is the same, I'll generally go with the Disney mod. The F&B costs are actually a little better at the Disney resorts in my opinion. That's just me though. (I will add that I think the bus service to & from the Hilton Bonnett Creek & Waldorf isn't the greatest. It's ok to get to MK or Epcot, but to get to AK or DHS it's a long ride. Never bothered with return service as it was too iffy. Just used Uber. I will also end my rant with this; I studied Tourism in college & actually have a bachelors degree in commercial recreation. (I know it's garbage, because but on this topic, it's somewhat relevant.). Nothing in my studies showed a real benefit to the resort fee. I can accept parking fees. (Necessary evil, especially in seriously urban areas.). The resort fee serves nothing more than to consumers off. I've argued this with hotel sales people and none of them in the last 11 years have been able to provide a reasonable explanation of why the mandatory resort fee is a positive thing.

And before they did that it was fairly cheap to park after a certain time and I was even waved through once.
We had a reservation at Emeril's and showed up to park at 10 to 6. They were going to charge us to park, even tho' we had reservations. So I told the gate guy I would just back up and come back in 10 minutes, and he wound up waving us through. I wound up spending ~ $450 that night, so I don't think they missed my parking fee.

Charging more for (at least what is perceived as) a benefit like preferred parking is basically free money.

This could actually be a pretty funny study into the human condition. If you look at preferred parking everywhere it is offered: theme parks, sporting events, other random touristy places, it is usually twice the price just to save a few steps. Really shows how 1: people are loose with money, especially while on vacation and 2: people are lazy as ****. It will probably sell out every day.

"With the addition of preferred parking at Disney Springs, only the resort hotels remain as an additional parking revenue source, and speculation suggests that changes to parking at resorts is planned."

LOL.

Except for the vast majority of free parking still available at DS. It's not like all of DS is now parking-for-fee and the resorts are the only "free" (see below) parking left. It's still free to park at DS. But we shouldn't let reality get in the way of a juicy rumor!

Also... Resort hotels already charge you for parking and transportation, it's called costing $40 more per night than a comparable nearby motel/hotel.

Right, I wasn't making any inferences that parking at DS was now all pay-only, and the 98% of parking there that is free will likely not change.

And I don't know, $40 per night doesn't sound right when you can get a 1-bedroom suite at Buena Vista Suites that sleeps 6 for $140 per night even with their fees. :p

Questions: will all spots in those lots be pay-only? Or will some remain free?
Also: Grapefruit, as far as I can see, is less convenient than Orange or Lime decks for most visitors, or am I missing something? Is the idea that when those decks are getting full you can shell out some bucks and still park on this side of the street?

Grapefruit is very convienient for Cirque Du Soleil, if you have show tickets it might be worth the preferred parking to get out quickly after the show?

and POOF...there goes totally free parking from Disney.
Another money grab by Iger and the gang.

Next....they will be selling the spots closer to the elevators on the other levels.

Like at Legoland, where they have preferred parking under large awnings. As an added plus, there are solar panels on the roof to make them "green". I'm surprised Disney hasn't jumped on a similar idea.

Solar Panels on the room to make them "green" is a myth. But it is a good way to get environmentalists off their back...by pretending to be green.

Other ways Disney will find a way to up charge for items in the future:

- $5.00 per person to use the pedestrian bridges to Disney Springs
- Preferred close parking on the garage levels so you can park closer to the garage. ($10.00)
- $25.00 charge to be able to stop your vehicle in front of the lobby doors at the value resorts to get your bags out quicker
- $5.00 per bag charge added to your bill for Disney Magical Express baggage transfer
- $10.00 for preferred chaise lounges at hotel pools
- $3.50 towel rental at hotel pools
- $40 preferred entry into Disney Parks so you can skip the line
then $55 super-preferred so you can skip those preferred lines if they get too long.
- $4.99 general recycling fee for each hotel guest to handle the sorting of your trash for recycling.

....more to come.
