Pre-Disney Workout?

Usually walk around 5 miles a day so I don't do anything extra getting ready for WDW. Walking through the world is not much of a problem for my feet, but when I stand in a line my dogs start barking.

as a group several members of my family (sister, daughter, mother, and i) switched to a mediterranean diet and walking 5-6 days a week at the beginning of april. we now do 4-5 miles each walk and when i'm walking i listen to my mp3 player which includes multiple disney songs as well as the audio from poc, splash, space mountain, and the mk monorail loop. i'm a goal oriented kind of person so i use it as a carrot dangling in front of me. we're going back to wdw at the end of nov-1st week of dec for my sisters 40th birthday and want to look good for those disney pics. so i figure with walking 5 miles a day that will get me through uummm the first 1-2 hours of day one without dying right?

So I'm wondering if there is anyone else out there who does this?

My mother and I for the past two Disney trips started walking about a month or two before the trip to "get ready" for Disney. It's not that we are not physically active or don't walk much on a daily basis. We just know how MUCH walking is in store in Disney and like to "amp" up our game before we go. I started seriously walking two weeks ago and have been listening to RoE, Wishes and Fantasmic as inspiration to walk further each night.

Am I a weirdo or is there anyone else out there???:lookaroun

This is what I do. Including some of the music.

I run (just got in from a 10 mile run in fact)

However, last time at WDW, my legs and feet hurt after the first day. That quickly went away by day 2, but it was interesting. I guess it is different muscles. There has been some comments over in the running at WDW section about lactic acid build up as well.

So, no, I don't do anything special to 'prep' for WDW.

I do this on every Disney trip, especially WDW. For DH and I's honeymoon in '03, a little over a month before our trip, I would walk at least 1-2 miles every day, so by the time we arrived, I adjusted to all the walking. On our last trip to WDW, I exercised ten months before our trip in '07. I would listen to my podcasts (ITM & WDW Radio Show) or audio park music, while using the bouncy ball. I ended up dropping three dress sizes. It wasn't the exact weight where I wanted to be, but at least I was three dress sizes smaller (I was a size 14 by the time I arrived at WDW). :D So far, for the most part I'm around a size 12-14. I've been going back to the gym (again, thank god), and my goal is to be at least a size 10 by our trip next year (Dec '11). I figured this is a realistic goal, and more chances of keeping off the weight. I notice whenever I go on vacation (WDW, NYC, etc.) I end up losing weight because of all the walking I do. I don't expect to be model skinny, but I want to be at a healthy realistic weight. I want to be fit enough to have the stamina to keep going (even at my heaviest when being in the parks, I still had more stamina then a five-year-old). I want to be able to look at pictures of myself and not cringe or feel self conscious.

I'm probably blabbering on, but that's what I do and how I feel.

That's awesome! Interesting to hear that there is a bunch of other folks that do this. I actually went back to Weight Watchers last week to drop a few pounds. I realized I extensively planned this whole trip and if we were to go now, I'd be really unhappy with all the photos because I wouldn't like how I looked. So I've been sticking to my diet and walking a lot. Two nights ago, it was 40 blocks-45 minutes. Tonight it was 50 blocks and one hour!

I'm pretty active, but nothing can prepare you for all that extra walking. Especially the constant fast pace.

I bump up my walking before the trip. I also try to drop a little weight so I'm not pulling around any extra pounds.

I remember a while ago there was a thread about someone who takes some type of vitamin or herb and it makes your legs/feet feel fatigue-free....but I forget what the person recommended....

Tip: If you absolutely can't go back to your hotel because you're either not staying on property or for whatever reason, make sure you sit down in the AC as much as possible and get off your feet.

I love staying on property just because I can take naps. However, our family of 4, 2 weeks trip, doesn't give me that option. So I survived by dodging the sun as much as possible as well as walking a bit slower. The long days from 9 till past midnight were brutal but so worth it.

I work in a five story building. Starting about a month before our trip I try to take the stairs all the way up at least once a day. Around a week before the trip I take the stairs twice or more a day. I say it is prep for the parks, but I think it's mostly burning off excess excitement before the trip. :)

When there, I do some stretches in the room before heading out to the parks.

I'm on my feet for much of the day anyway, maintaining heavy machinery. What I need for WDW is a good pair of walking shoes! Haven't found a really great pair yet.

Have you looked into hiking shoes/boots? I've been wearing Columbia Trail Meister and Dogwoods for several years now and notice I have less back pain by the end of the day.

In my case, no matter the brand, the heels tend to collapse as the shoes age. When I notice I'm having more back pain I add some gel heel inserts and all is well until I completely wear out the shoes.

I actually broke down and bought a pair of croc sandals. I hate the original crocs but I heard they are wonderful for Disney.

I not only started walking on the treadmill for our trip in December I signed up for a digital photo class at the local community college so my pictures of the Christmas will be great.

We (my girlfriend and I) started P90X about 90 days before our trip. Were on week 7 of 12 right now ..... if it doesn't kill us it should put us in perfect shape for our trip. :D

I always have the best of intentions to condition for a trip but life gets in the way. I have learned there is noting like a like morning yoga for shin splints though. My favorites being Hero pose and Down-Face Dog (the duck tape of yoga).

Oh yes I do the pre WDW stuff too. I try to drop a few pounds so I can eat guilt free otherwise (as has happened on previous trips) I sit at the airport before the long flight home feeling like a bloated balloon!

Not trying to brag here. I work out everyday of the week as much as I can so I really do not do anything special when a Disney trip is coming up.
