on my last ride the storm effects were also not working...just the occasional sound effect without the rain and lightning.

I was noticing a change to that whole area...rock walls that used to have openings were filled in, the steering pirate has changed a bit... and let's face it, after the failure of the mermaid overlay scene it would be nice if they added a really meaningful show upgrade to this area...

The skull has always been there, if I remember right it use to say "dead men Tell no Tales". I have not seen it working in a very long time, so they cover it.

Same for me two weeks ago. When if first came online after that big refurb there was so much lightning that people here were complaining. It's been off my past two rides.

Imagineering does have storage facilities. I'd be incredibly surprised if it were actually new. Disney recycles and or reuses everything they can whenever possible.
There is no way that the removal was not intentional in 2006.

I think they're saying they might have held on to the old one, and have perhaps now pulled that out of storage. Having no knowledge one way or the other I would suspect a new skull is more likely, but who knows.

Is it safe to assume this move might have something to do with the new Pirates film, whose title derives from the famous echoes in this particular cave?

Now, if the Skeleton steering the shipwreck in the storm suddenly morphed into Johnny Depp a-la Shanghai, What a spectacular transition that would make... from present day to the past.... Wow...
But this is TDO, it could never happen....

That is an amazing effect, but I want as little Pirates film content in the original attractions as possible.
