Hey everyone! My name's Josh, long time Disney fanatic, new to the board! I was a MK Merchandise CP in Spring 2001, and full time MK Attractions (FastPass Department and Jungle Cruise Skipper) from Summer 2001-Oct 2002, now I am a CT.

I love the board and look forward to joning in on all the conversations around here! :D I have tons of stories and useless info about the parks and resort all around so I look forward to sharing with you guys!

However today I am lookign for info from you guys! My mother's birthday is Next weekend and my father and I are taking here to WDW for a long weekend! I just booked last night at Port Orleans Riverside. I have never stayed there before and come to think of it cannot remember ever visiting when I was living down there. So I would like to hear your thoughts and opinions on the resort. I have read both good a bad reviews on the size of the room and the huge size of the resort.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a building or area to request? My mother has a hard time with stairs and would prefer somthing with quick and easy access to the parking. Any advice would be much appriciated! Thanks so much

Have a magical day!

Hey MePoor, There is an island specifically devoted to the Main pool area and yes it does have a slide. I usually hang at the quiet pools as opposed to the Main pool area as it is a bit quieter, which I prefer. A trip to Blizzrd Beach may not be a bad idea in any event. Also the last time I was there they were doing campfires in PO Riverside and you can even buy a kit for making s'mores!! That was the first time I had even heard about that little tidbit!! Also PO Riverside has the best restaurant for breakfast. The name of the sit down restaurant is Boatwright's. Absolutely amazing place and maybe a dollar or two more than the food court. And in the morning to be waited on and not the craziness that can be the food court it is worth it for me!! You will have a great time!! Belle

good news about the Island slide!.... s'mores (aka "ewy & gewy") have been the campfire "must do" snack up here since I was a kid (too long ago!)... Boatwrights - I can hardly wait to get me lips around one of those banana stuffed waffles! 16 days and counting....

I dont see why you couldn't just go to the dragon pool? I am sure it is ok. No one will notice. :)

You have to scale a 8 foot tall electrified fence, then navigate a small mine field and some razor wire. I recommend tying your towel around your waist so you can have your hands free. After that, no worries! (Except the water is a bit murky) It's really not that crowded.

That's it? I have gone through more for a Snickers. :)

POR

We were just at POR a couiple of weeks ago. We requested, and received, rooms in Building 14 of Alligator Bayou. This is the closest to the food court building (but it is not within sight or earshot) It is also closest to the bus and close to a parking lot. This is a nonsmoking building. We were on the first floor and on a holiday weekend were not bothered by any feeling of lots of people going by. In fact, it was quite quiet and pretty, the landscaping is lovely.
If your mom has trouble walking, the mansions are a long walk to the main building which has the food court, restaurant, convenience store, etc.
Our room was nice and clean, but quite dim. Bring a 100 watt light bulb if you want to read; you will not be able to read in your room unless you get something better.
Overall we were very happy, the grounds are lovely, the food court handy and lots of variety. Boatwrights Restaurant IMHO is mediocre and expensive, go elsewhere in WDW for a sitdown meal.
On President's Day weekend the buses were always full, we of ten stood, but they seemed to keep coming.

MY FAVORITE! We stay there every time now! We stayed in the Bayous, but they seem far from everything - so now we stay in the Mansions. Standard rooms, plenty big for a hotel room. Lots of amenities, great foodcourt, wonderful atmosphere.

You'll love it!

We stayed there 5 years in a row when it was Dixie Landings and we loved it. The only reason we stopped staying there was price. The grounds are beautiful and the restaurant has great breakfast.:)

here's a note for your mom - if it's really inconvenient for her to get around, request a wheel chair at guest services. We did that several times at different resorts before my mom actually resigned herself to the fact that medically she needs one and purchased one. (she suffers with congestive heart failure which frequently leaves her short of breath) Guest services was always accomodating, and we got to use the chair from the resort at the parks (which is allowed). I warn you though, moms are hard to come around. It took some talking to get mine to finally admit she just has to have one in the world. With the chair she gets to do EVERYTHING because she's not taxing herself with the walking. Have a great time!

I think that the French Quarter portion has reopened from the renovations. I'm not sure, but I think they allow guests at one Port Orleans to go to the pools at the other one. I think the boat even stops off at the French Quarter from Riverside on the way to Downtown Disney, so that's sort of a nice excursion.
