Pop Century Trip Report

Hello all,

I have been taking part in the Disney Fall Endurance Series the past 6-8 weeks and have stayed at three different resorts the last month. Last weekend (10/24) I stayed at Pop Century for one night after running the Tower of Terror 13k. Here are my comments and concerns with this resort.

Frist I would like to comment of the look/theme of the resort it self, it is OK. I stayed in the 90's area and our pool was a square, yup a square, BIG DEAL. It was supposed to be a computer monitor, but to my family and I it was just a big square. The theming of the buildings themselves seems cheaper than that of All Stars, instead of three dimensional effects (basketballs, tennis balls, surfboards etc) there are just flat signage (compact discs, flowers, etc) I guess the budget was cut for the theming. As with the All Star Resorts the landscaping is just beautiful, Disney really goes all out with the landscaping, we love to look around and get ideas for our own home since we live in the Tampa area.

Second, the main building where the food court, lobby, arcade and store are located. Check-in was quick and easy, no complaints at all (highly recommend the online check-in). The store was large and well stocked with just about everything you would need/want. My 12 yo son loved the large arcade. The service at the food court was very slow, VERY slow. The looks on all the faces of the people waiting in the lines said it all, they looked disgusted. The problem was with the cooks, not the servers, just the cooks. In the area that served the pancakes the line was 15 families deep and the cook would only make 4-5 servings of pancakes at a time. She only used a third of the griddle, while waiting for the pancakes the other food I had on my tray got ice cold. At lunch I waited for a cheeseburger, the woman in front of me wanted a hamburger and the cook had six burgers on the grill, she put cheese on all of them. The woman who patiently waited for her hamburger was really mad, she had two servings of chicken nuggets that had gotten cold while she waited. She gave them back and stormed off , I couldn't blame her.

Lastly, the room itself was clean, well appointed and had enough room for my family of three. I do have a few comments/concerns though; first, the mattress was very comfortable but the pillows were lousy (next time I'll bring my own). Secondly, the water saver faucet in the bathroom sink has GOT to go, it barely rinsed off my toothbrush. Lastly and MOST disturbing and disgusting, are the walls in this hotel made of paper??? All night I could hear people peeing all around me :hurl:. Yup, you read correct, I would hear people do their thing and then flush the toilet, gross. I don't remember ever hearing that at any of the All Star rooms. Has anyone else had this happen? We were on the third floor near the end of the building.

Overall, I would give Pop another try. Only if All Stars was sold out though.

What do you guys think???

Frank

OH YEAH..

Why hasn't Disney finished off this resort and what are the other buildings going to be 1900 to 1940?? It's been eight years now, I'd think they would finish the resort. Hopefully they'll do better sound proofing on the other 10 buildings. LOL

I couldn't agree with you more! However, POP is a special place to many here on the boards so be prepared for some dissenting opinions. I agree with you about the food court, to me it was too big and very noisy with all the music and TV's on all the time. We took our food outside if we could find a table. We stayed right in front of the petal pool, and it is very pretty. I never saw the computer pool but how could anyone miss the eyesore in the back? Tear it down or finish it, that's what I say.

I agree with the last poster...beware b/c alot of people on this thread love Pop...lol. I'm glad to know though I'm not the only one who could hear my neighbors using the restroom at night! I could have swore I heard the same thing and I thought there was no way...but I guess I was right. We do stay at Pop more than any other value resort though. I thought the walls at all the value resorts were pretty thin and I actually liked the food court at Pop better than the other ones. (but I've never stayed at Sports, just the Music and Movies)

Thank you for giving us insight, I know when I'm planning trips it always helps me to read others reviews!!! (what were the other resorts you stayed at this month? any stand outs?)

Well,

I had no idea I was going to start something when I wrote this post. Please be gentle, I was nothing but fair and honest in my evaluation.

I stayed at PO Riverside and loved it, always have for two nights when we did the Everest Challenge late September and the stayed at All Stars Music in the begining of Oct for the Race for the Taste and Loved it too. I always try to stay at an All Stars resort, they are the best deal for my family. Florida Resident and Tables in Wonderland discounts really help out. But two of the three dates were sold out so I had to do Pop and PO.

I'm also glad to hear that I wasn't the only one that heard the other toilets in the hotel. That is a serious problem, I understand hearing water running but actually hearing the stream hitting the bowl is really gross. Sorry to ruin anyones appetite.

Like I said, I'll stay there again if there are no rooms at All Stars.

LOL....I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

I love P.O., but I'm a local like you and when you're staying often it really does pay to go value....

I have stayed at Pop Century and AllStars Music once each, Animal Kingom Lodge twice, Caribbean once and lastly Fort Wilderness Lodge cabin.

I have heard the toilet noises at all except for Fort Wilderness - well besides the noise of myself using it. haha

I was shocked that at AKL that I could hear the same noises from the value resorts. Nothing like waking up in the morning to what sounds like someone doing their business on your head.

Pop has was a big flop in our book as well...

I was determined to "like" the values (due to their pricing) and stayed at ASMu nearly 9mo after our Pop stay. The recently renovated rooms, smaller grounds, and overall theme/appeal of the resort was a steal to us given what we paid. In fact in room quality alone... the idea of Pop sickens me... Zero Disney Resort Magic in our book.

Pop wasn't for us... but for those reading reviews/posts for future trips, poor experiences don't mean it's a "bad" resort. Different strokes for different folks... and we all have different expectations and experiences.

Every resort has it's fans... and Pop (along with AKL and Poly) seems to have a great fan club! It's why we chose it for our first value stay, and I think why it flopped for us. I spent so much time reading glowing reviews that to an extent, I "idolized" Pop; setting my expectations too high.

To the OP... thanks for the review!

I love POP, I never had some of the issues like you had(hearing people and such) and we never stayed in the 90s because it looks boring. We normally stay in the 70's, ground level and love it. However, I could not agree with you more on the food court!!! THE COOKS ARE SLOW! one time, I went down before my sister to get myself an omelet, my sister comes down 10 minutes later, gets watermelon and buys it, finds a table and finishes before i have even sat down with my omelet yet.

Well

I'm getting ready to be at POP at whole week...11/21 - 11/28 - I hope your issues were just flukes as I am really looking forward to staying at POP as I've read so much good about it! Now I'm a bit scared LOL

The only thing I would somewhat disagree with is the grounds. Even though we live in FL, I still find it relaxing to stroll near the lake and I think that the lake adds something to Pop that the other values do not have.

I have heard that if you keep your restroom door closed, it will cut down on the noise from the neighbor's.

I have also found 'thin walls' at other resorts (AMKL comes to mind). I guess a lot depends on you neighbor as well.

I've stayed at POP and ASM and I can say that I will never go back to a All Star resort for one simple reason, the busses. POP has it's own bus sytem and does not share with any other resort. As far as theming, all the values are somewhat bland compared to the moderates but I've never thought that POP was any less than the All Star resorts.

I don't stay at value resorts to be blown away, I stay there so that I can get to The World for a bit less money. As long as they serve pizza, I am happy. :p

I had to control the cooks in May. I love french fries but the amount they give you with your meal is crazy (literally about 10 total). I had to control them and tell them, I want more. And they always gave it to me.

I have had a problem at AS Sports in January. One of the cooks literally grabbed his croch area and scratched it in front of me then proceeded to cook. I was mortified and disgusted.. I told the manager on duty. Plus, he was not the cleanest. I think he was part of the College Program because his name badge said the school he represented.

We stayed at POP last July/August for my daughters national softball tournament. I have stayed at the campground, AK lodge, and the Grand Floridian. POP can't compare to the AK Lodge or the GF, but neither does the price you pay! The water saver faucet? I wasn't aware that they had these. When we were there, they shut the water off for a few hours one day to "fix" the low water pressure, and when we got back to the room, the pressure was great. Maybe they get some type of build up in their pipes? As for the paper walls, we stayed in the 60's building facing the flower pool, 3rd floor, and never noticed it (Thank God!) :hurl: I'm right there with you on that one.

The faucet I'm talking about is the kind where the water comes out like a shower head. A bunch of little streams instead of one large one. Know what I mean??

Please don't be scared! POP is a fine place, really. Just not my cup of tea. To tell you the truth I never heard any bathroom noise, but the walls are thin and you may hear the shower from the room next door. The grounds are big, the lake is pretty, BUT the abandoned area off the lake is really an eyesore and took my focus off the lake and onto the uglyness of it all. The food court is loud, be prepared for sensory overload in the morning. We took our food outside or back to our room, I can't take all the noise and confusion in the morning.....guess I am getting old.

That being said, IF I was going back and POP was the only place I could stay would I stay there again....hell yes I would. That says it all.

I'm going to try out POP for 2 nights in January, before checking into The Polynesian :). I originally had reservations for those nights at POFQ, which I love. But by changing to POP, we will save over $170, which almost pays for a dining plan for 1 person, the week we're there.

This only works if you drive, but as for the noise you hear, bring a small fan for 'white noise'. It makes a world of difference and I sleep really good that way. Again, it only works if you have the ability to transport it. Because of the fan, I can't say I noticed the 'noises in the night' when we were at POP in the spring. And I second the beds, they were really comfortable.

LOVE the Pop!!! :sohappy:Of course it is the only resort we have stayed at on our first three trips, so I have nothing to really compare it to! :p

As for the bathroom sounds coming from surrounding rooms, I remember hearing people once in a blue moon, but I was usually SO tired from a busy day at the parks that I zonked right out when my head hit the pillows. :snore: And I am usually a VERY light sleeper at home and need an air filter running in my bedroom at night to drown out noise from the kids rooms.

Can't wait to get back down to Pop in 499 days!!! :brick:
