Tis a bit of a dissappointment. But...I don't go to disney to bar hop. I can do that here easily enough (I'm in canada....we have many, many, many bars).
So...I gues...I'll just have to get over it. I prefer pubs generally, anyway. So Epcot will have everything I need ;)

Well, at least the Adventurer's Club is staying. Although I don't know if I want a bunch of whiny kids in there, that would kind of ruin the atmosphere there.

I know, for once I was happy to be able to get away from whining kids. I mean I deal with kids 9-10 hours out of the day at work, and I loved going to PI where I could spend time with people my age. Guess that's a bust.

You know, I think its just going to be more kid friendly on the outside of the clubs. I don't think small children will be able to come into the clubs at night. There will now be better way to get to and from the shops at the Marketplace and the restaurants on the West Side. And there will be a cafe and pub and other attractions that are fit for a family....

We may have to say good bye to all the adult-beverage stands on the outside.

 Just another thing taken away from the adult disney travellers. This seems to be the growing theme within Disney in general with attractions being 'kidded' down. Its really upsetting because I might be going out there to be a cast member - supposed to be the biggest party in disney for cast members there... O well at least the kids havn't taken over universal yet...

A rather large number of "adult disney travelers" bring their kids with them... ;)

I don't think this is going to make Pleasure Island any less appealing to the "adult" crowd.

Yeah, plus I have a friend who works the door at PI sometimes in the different clubs...and some parents are nuts. This one guy tried to bring his 6 month old child into 8Trax. He had managers, even security suggesting that he shouldn't really bring his child into there but I guess he just ignored them.

Anyway, they better not get rid of the outside stands! That would be a bad idea! I'm also not a fan of Harley Davidson...but oh well.

I personally am quite torn on this whole issuse.

As an adult, and PI fan, I sometimes do wish the Island was still completely closed off to outsiders. Much more of an adult/party atmosphere---especially with the live bands and nightly NYE extravaganza. Those things I definitely do miss, because they added a lot to the atmosphere. The thing I hate more than anything is seeing families with small children hanging out in PI at all hours of the night. On vacation or not, not only do I think it is crazy to have children that are still in strollers up that late, but to be bringing young ones like that to an adult nightclub strip where there is tons of drinking, smoking, etc... Sorry, but in my opinion, that is just bad parenting.

We have to be realistic though and can't live in the past. Like it or not, PI is now open to anyone who feels like walking through it, so all oldschool PI fans can do at this point is hope for the best from these new changes.

From what I have seen so far (whether from fan site photo updates or articles like the ones posted in this thread) I am very optimistic about where these changes are going.

1.) While I said I don't like seeing small children walking around PI at 2:00 in the morning, as I also said earlier I think that is poor parenting, not Disney's fault. As a whole, I think opening up the Island is a good idea... Especially the new bridge that is to be built. The old one made a somewhat awkward transition from PI to Westside, just like the "bypass bridge" that allowed you to go from Westside to the parking lot did. I'm glad this is being totally redone, it will be wonderful to walk straight-through from one end of DTD to another. There are also plans for a ferry dock, I think this is another great idea. Boat transportation will definitely add some nice atmosphere to the area.

2.) TLC. As part of this project, it sounds like much of the island is getting some general upkeep---That is ALWAYS a good thing. Hopefully we get some nice new lighting, landscaping, views of the water, and maybe even some updates to the club facades out of this.

3.) No announcements of any of the clubs going anywhere---yet. This pleases me a lot. I think each one of the current clubs adds something unique to PI. The comedy clubs are great, and each one of the dance clubs offer a different genre of music... there really is just about something for everyone at the current PI. I think as long as the clubs stay as they are on the interior, and this current beautification process of the exteriors continues, this is win-win for everybody. Not only will PI be more family friendly and accessible for DTD guests as a whole for the early evening hours, but current PI lovers will still be able to have a great time inside the clubs and out on the streets late at night as they always have.---This is what I think Disney is going for with the PI renovation project.

While we might be losing a few things here and there... as a whole, I think this is a great idea. We still have our great clubs plus we may be getting some new venues out of this, accessibility will be better than ever (whether by foot or by boat) and not to mention---from the looks of the concept art and amount of work being done it seems as though PI is getting a lot of TLC and will be looking better than ever.:)

I know no one is asking … but … here is my 2 cents. I was in middle school when Pleasure Island opened and I loved it. I don’t know who remembers this but the Rock N’ Roll beach club once was a roller rink. We used to love to skate there, but that was one the first things to change at PI after it opened. Also 8-Track was called Videopolis (sp?), and was a great under 21 club … in fact back in the days the Island was open and you only paid to go into the clubs you wanted. But over the years as I got older PI changed and Mannequins soon became my favorite club to visit and I’m happy to see it is going to stay, but looking at the changes going on at PI it seems to me that they are getting back to the way I remember it from my youth.

My question is - are they removing the themeing altogether?

In the Eisner’s hey day themeing and story were key to everything Disney did. Typhoon Lagoon and PI both opened with a strong back-story that tied them together. The same typhoon that hit and wrecked that small fishing village also helped unearth Meriwether Pleasure’s island and Disney, in keeping with Pleasure’s philosophy turned his old warehouses into a place to party. Also that story was worked into Dixie Landings, that was a stretch but in a weird Disney way it worked.

i agree. as long as they keep the adventurers club, i really dont much care what they do to PI.i also agree that kids would ruin it, but i think that keeping the clubs pay will keep most of the kids out.

were they to get rid of the a/c, i would have no reason whatsoever to set foot on pi again.

Ya huh...no offense but I don't feel like running into Cubans trying to pick me up all night (No offense to anyone who is Cuban...I just hear Miami can be kinda scummy). Plus, i'd rather drive 20 minutes to PI and get in for free Sunday-Thursday instead of driving 3.5 hours to Miami, paying for gas, food and most likely a hotel.
