Disney's Pleasure Island (WALT DISNEY WORLD)
Downtown Disney's Pleasure Island continues its evolution tonight as most of the nightclubs turn to a ban of patrons under the age of 21.
The new guidelines, allowing entry only to people ages 21 or older, go into effect for the BET SoundStage Club, 8TRAX, Mannequins Dance Palace, Rock 'n' Roll Beach Club and Motion.
Younger people still will be welcome at two clubs that have broader entertainment, the Adventurers Club and the Comedy Warehouse, though an adult must accompany anyone under age 18. All ages still are welcome at the Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant.
Previously, the clubs had various policies on age restrictions, and often admitted people between the ages of 18 and 21.
The restrictions set in as Disney nears completion of a transformation of Pleasure Island that began more than a year ago. The entertainment complex once was an adult-entertainment complex. And no one could even enter the island without being at least 18 years old, and without paying cover charges.
Gates to the island were ripped out, island cover charges were dropped and all visitors to Downtown Disney were welcomed to at least pass through, or linger at the shops, starting in 2005. Since then, the island traffic has been rerouted, island hours were expanded, outdoor stages were demolished, bridges were changed, a new boat dock was built and some of the shops and clubs were moved or expanded. Some construction continues.
Now comes the tighter club age rule.
"The change allows for a more consistent format, a more uniform policy, for our guests on Pleasure Island," said Disney World spokesman Jacob DiPietre.

Downtime at Disney
This is the month and, in particular, the week when Walt Disney World theme parks slow down enough that they take a few attractions off-line to be refurbished, including Splash Mountain at Magic Kingdom and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster at Disney-MGM Studios.
Splash Mountain will be closed starting Tuesday and will stay closed through Jan. 27. Rock 'n' Roller Coaster also closes Tuesday and will not reopen until after Jan. 21.
The entire Typhoon Lagoon water park closes Sunday and will remain closed through March 17. However, Blizzard Beach, which has been closed since Oct. 29 for refurbishment, reopens Saturday. Also this week, Epcot's Wonders of Life Pavilion was scheduled to close today, with no certain reopening date, and the El Rio del Tiempo boat ride at Epcot's Mexico Pavilion will close Tuesday through April 1.

emotionally scar children? I went in the nightclubs from about age 12 on with my family, and I'm fine. It was actually quite fun...but I understand Disney limiting ages. It just would have been a challenge for our family with four kids, and by the time I turned 12, at least one of my siblings was at least 21 so it would have resulted in a split up family. It's the people with families that WDW risks losing with these policies, but honestly, the Island was stagnating anyway. It was much more exciting back in the early- to mid-90s. Now, I'm over 21 but don't even bother with them when I could have more fun with Evening EMHs in the parks. It was so ridiculously creepy to almost-stumble over children while hanging out at 8Trax. Not because I was drinking too much, but because who the hell expects to have children in a dimly lit nightclub? I don't have a problem with people 18-21, though I'm sure it can be a nightmare to enforce drinking laws with people under 21 there. But thnak God, dopey families who don't understand that just because it's WDW doesn't mean their children should be allowed to go everywhere have one less place to emotionally scar their progeny.

I guess it was marginally different in my case--we went during the Mardi Gras parties so there was always the games and the parade and all for us kids to enjoy. But still, we went into most of the clubs (the Adventurer's Club being my favorite), and I somehow managed to get into Yale years later...can't have destroyed me too muchYou sure about that?
j/k, but honestly, odds are you weren't there when I was there, and you didn't see what I saw. It wasn't exactly anything out of a snuff film, but I did see kids look genuinely scared stiff as drunk aunts insisted on drinking with them, and I did see a father almost start a fight with a shall-we-say insistent young man who refused to stop hitting on the dad's underage daughter. A seperate fight had broken out near a different group of women with kids, and neither man involved in that fight seemed to give a damn that kids were nearby (the booze helps, I'm sure). None of those kids had a look of awe, that "wow, this is how grownups act at night, I must be like a grownup today" gleam in their eyes. None of them looked like they wanted to be there, But what the hell, their parents were having fun, and isn't that what WDW is all about? Having fun at the expense of your children?
I'm sure there have been plenty of kids wandering into PI clubs with their families who are now leading happy productive lives, but that doesn't mean they should've been there.
