PLEASE tell me people are not this stupid

I've done it, thing is though the sign we took a pic of had a area of white striped lines I could of swore because I know we did not pull in the grass and I'm not dumb enough to stop in the middle of a drivIng lane. Maybe it was another enterance? Also though the 3 recent times I've driven in I've passed that sign in the pic twice and it wasn't really busy like a regular interstate at all. Guess it just depends on the time.

At the risk of being bashed out of the thread, I will be honest enough and man enough to admit that I have stopped before for a picture.

It was our 2007 trip, I believe. We had no kids with us, and my wife stayed in the van, so it's not like I took the time to line the family up for a photo. I just wanted a quick photo of the entrance arch. It was 5 years ago, so I can't remember if I pulled over to the shoulder or if I just stopped on the road. But I'm kind of thinking I just stopped right there on the road, unbuckled, got out real quick, snapped my picture and then got back in the van. Of course, I checked my mirror and made sure there was no one coming up behind me. I don't remember the road being busy at all, and I would not have done it if traffic was such that I perceived any danger. But if there is no one coming up behind me, then why not? Not like someone is going to magically pop up out of nowhere in the 10 seconds it takes to get out and take a quick picture.

Now let the flaming begin. :D

I've learned over the years to never ever underestimate the stupidy of some people.

I guess I wouldn't really call it stupidity. Maybe lack of forethought. I know some extremely smart people that do some of the silliest things without any thought of how dumb it may be.

I do have to wonder what exactly Disney thought was going to happen when they placed a large, decorative sign over the entrance. Surely they had to realize people would stop.

Not that I'm advocating or excusing that behavior, but they had to realize this.

Almost surprised that disney doesn't just setup a mockup of the entrance for guests. I bet they could get some money through the photopass program if they have a few photographers next to the mockup.

Not terribly shocking. I've seen stoppers several times.
As a local, I'm not really into the whole must-have-photo-of-arch thing.
Then again, I don't really think it's a huge deal - especially when there isn't any afternoon traffic.

That's how I feel about it. How dangerous or stupid it is depends on how busy the road is. If there is all kinds of traffic going down that road, then ya, it's stupid and dangerous, not to mention inconsiderate, to just stop right there in the middle of the road to take a picture. But if you've looked left and right, and looked in your mirror, and there is no one within sight, then I see nothing wrong with stopping real quick for a picture. It's all about using a little judgement based on the current circumstances.

Some people are so absolute that they think it's dangerous and stupid at all times no matter what, just because it's a freeway. But if that freeway is empty at the time, except for you, then I would not call it dangerous. I know Wile E Coyote has the frequent problem of having a vehicle pop up out of nowhere and run him over after he's throroughly checked and found that the coast is clear, but that only happens in the cartoons, folks.

Anyone who thinks they can see around this corner is fooling themselves.

Maybe the situation wouldn't be as dangerous if you could see as far behind you as the eye can see but please don't tell people that you have the ability to see around corners. LOL A car coming around this spot at 45 to 50 mph may very well drill your car. I know, because I have almost hit 2 people here. One was out of his car (which was parked in the narrowing white lines there between the lanes. Thanks for that.) and he was strolling around the lane taking pictures of his girlfriend. The other person was in a minivan just stopped fully in the lane (right about where the pavement turns dark in that photo) and at first glance I assumed they were moving because there were no tail or brake lights and who stops there? I had to slam on the brakes and eek around him.

I never said I could see around corners, or were you referring to someone else in this post?

We only get down there once a year, and this was 5 years ago, so I don't remember how close that corner is to where we parked in relation to the entrance gateway. But if it helps any, we were staying at Port Orleans Riverside that year and we came off of I-4 at exit 68. I stopped just short of the arch to take a picture and there was really no traffic present at all.

The problem is that it will take only one person to be hit by a car and all of a sudden this is a problem. I think Disney is smart in doing whatever it can by telling people not to stop so they don't have to deal with the lawsuit that will follow. The liability of someone stopping there is huge, but Disney can only do so much to stop people. Sometimes you will see the OC Sheriff officer out there too giving people even more incentive to keep moving along.

I will resist from adding in my own thoughts on the subject, but will throw in a legal fact or two:

Florida Law states the minimum speed on a highway is 40mph. (Unless it's a 70mph zone, in which case minimum is 50mph, though that's not the case here)

So no matter how safe or unsafe the driver feels the action is, stopping in the middle of the highway for a photo is officially/technically an illegal maneuver.
And stopping on the side of the road is also illegal, as it's a violation of the posted road signs.

I understand that and I don't fault Disney at all for trying to cover their behinds. They are wise to try to foresee and prevent a lawsuit. My posts were not intended as a rebuke towards Disney for the signs or anything like that. I was just simply saying that whether or not it is dangerous all depends on whether there is actually traffic on the road at that time.

Heck, when I was a kid, we used to play on the railroad tracks all the time, but even as kids, we were smart enough to know the danger of a train and to be off the tracks in time when we saw a train approaching. I think as adults, we are smart enough to know when a roadway is clear enough to be able to stop to take a quick picture. But since not everyone apparently uses those smarts, Disney has to take action to prevent the inevitable lawsuits.

T...How dangerous or stupid it is depends on how busy the road is. ...

I think it depends on the driver, and has nothing to do with how busy or not busy the road is. We've all seen accidents happen during even the most favorable of conditions due to an inexperienced, distracted, or otherwise impaired driver. Someone recently drove into my friend's parked car in an office parking lot. That's right ... at probably 3 mph ... a parked car ... Ugh.

I guess that means there are thousands upon thousands of lawbreakers on the highway during rush hour. I'm counting down the days until I get a ticket for "stopping" on I-4 at 5:30 PM. :brick:

That's a bit much don't you think? You are, of course, allowed to slow for obstructions (traffic) that prevent you from moving forward.

By "obstruction," do you mean priceless photo opportunity? :lookaroun

No. More like a family in a car, fallen tree, deep water, etc... :) I would pay good money to see the judge's face when a person tries to say "But your honor, we just wanted a cool picture!" LOL
