Please help me lie to my children!

Our trip to WDW in August is a surprise. The kids know something is up b/c the trip revolves around DD4's 5th bday and I've probably asked a few too many opinion based questions (i.e. they're not fully buying "well, we'll go again at some point in the future so I just wanted to know what you preferred ). We always make a big deal out of bdays so I told the girls we're going on a special surprise vacation for DD4's bday. This at least gets her off my back about party planning and keeps most of her bday focus on the cake I'm making for her class. BUT- I need more/better lies about where we're going. i.e. good places and things to do that are good, but not great- i.e. while I doubt this would happen- I'd hate to drive into WDW and have DD4 cry that we're not at the Grand Canyon . We're driving this time, so I need at least one really decent one that I can have enough material for hours of build up.

There is a youtube video about this - 2 kids get the surprise that they are off to WDW and they had originally been told they were going someplace else - if I remember correctly, like an uncles house, or their grandparents place. And they kids were so upset b/c the wanted to go to the other place. So...just to avoid this happening - although highly unlikely which is why the video clip is so funny - I would refrain from saying you were going someplace else.

Yup- that's pretty much my fear. I was originally going to tell them we were going to see grandma and grandpa and have my parents meet us at WDW, but they can't make it due to my mom's school's calendar. The girls would be happy to be at WDW, but crushed about no grandma and grandpa.

If they aren't really focusing on it nor asking any questions...why say anything at all? Just a thought. Avoids having to come up with excuses that in the end may back fire! lol :D

Daddy's job has asked him to attend a seminar out of state, and he is allowed to bring us along... the Hotel will have a Pool :) hehehe

Simple.....and no possibility of the kids being upset...there IS after all a Pool at WDW! :) lol

That is probably the best plan. I will just need something once we get in the car.

How close are you to WDW

Around 1,000 miles, so it will be a long multi day drive. We plan on making a few "fun" stops on the way to throw them off even more.

That's hysterical :ROFLOL: and awful at the same time.

This is entirely personal, so just take it with a grain of salt, but i hate the term "lie" to your children..maybe...help me surprise my children???

I know- not everyone's favorite choice of words...just kind of how it feels right now to make the surprise come off.

That sounds like the perfect solution for the car trip. :sohappy: And when adding in the stops on the way...we can make it sound like those are the "real" surprises and the pool at the hotel is the added perk. Thanks!

Tell them that you are going to rent a bus and visit all the historic landmarks between Washington DC and New Hampshire. Be sure to visit Lexington and Concord while in New Hampshire. Oh, and maybe stop and have some pizza with Donald Trump in New York. That sounds detailed enough for them to believe it.

I agree with the pool at the hotel idea. After we told them that tall tale, when we arrived my DH would act like we weren't going to WDW and we are surprised it's so close just to get them riled up but that's why I love him! :ROFLOL:

DH would LOOOOOOVVVVE that first part. The kids might be on board (like they have a choice :ROFLOL::lookaroun if I tell them they can do Donald's hair ).

You could just say that it's a great surprise and you just can't talk about it. Tell them you don't want to ruin the surprise for them.

That's where we're at now. I just don't know how much longer it will work (without one of us going nuts). As DD4 proclaimed at dinner last night with regard to a surprise dessert (After a round of -what is it-what is it?) "daddy, I don't do well with surprises." IDK - maybe silence on the matter as a whole might be better- or make us more sane. :hammer:

The pool idea sounds like the best path for us to take. They've been pushing Great Wolf Lodge really hard lately, so she might even think we're going there if I keep talking about a great pool. And we are planning an off/down day with a lot of pool time, so it's not really a lie.

Thanks everybody!!!

Chickie...where are you from? We live in NKY and have tossed the idea of Great Wolf Lodge around, our 5 and 6 year old would love it but our 2 and 1 year olds can't swim.
Anyway we are also lying to our children about our trip over Labor Day weekend. We were in WDW in October of 2010 and told them we wouldn't go back to WDW until FL wall was down. Then in April we got an invitation to a family wedding in Orlando and then I called Jenelle at KK and the trip was a pretty good deal so now we are GOING TO DISNEY WORLD...but not telling out kids! They know we are going to the family wedding and that WDW is very close to the wedding. We have them pretty convinced that we are not going to the parks by telling they because the flood damage to our basement and our roof damage we could not afford to go (we really can't but the roof and basement came after the trip pay off:brick:). They have been cracking us up by trying to sell lemonade, their toys and doing extra chores for money to buy tickets. It is really sweet how much effort they are putting in to all of this. So we are going to the wedding (afternoon) and then going to check in! I can NOT wait to see them when they drive under the welcome to Walt Disney World sign...
I would go with daddy's job and hotel pool excuse you are going out of state and to a pool...I would lay it on thick when you tell them the surprise about the fake out of town trip too. My problem is with packing, our WDW things (light spinners/fan spray bottles/ponchos etc) packed and in the car so they won't see them...
Now I am just worried I will spill or they will here me/see me doing things, preparing etc...my 5 year old just busted me ESTY.com looking at some custom princess clothes for our dinner in the Castle...I just told her I was looking for her little sisters Princess B-Day party.
The only thing I miss is our countdown games with the kids. Enjoy the anticipation and surprise:)

We're in the Houston area, so if we went to Great Wolf it would be the Grapevine, TX location. Our kids are in swim lessons, but not strong enough swimmers to get value out of a visit to a water park...so, we're going to hold off on that one for another year or so.

That's awesome about your trip! And your lie :D Sooooooooooo adorable about the chores and lemonade to raise $ for tickets :) Also nice that the wedding is so close by to make all of this possible. That is a good point about things like the light spinners. We have a few that I was planning on packing... I'll definitely have to be stealthy with those- everything else I think I can get by without raising too many eyebrows.

The clothing certainly presents a challenge. Hopefully your 5yr old bought it- sounds convincing to me!!! DD4's 5th bday outfit is up in the air and while I'm thinking mini pettiskirt with some kind of jeweled sparkly flowery custom tee- I was planning on jazzing up some bday mouse ears- so those MUST be hidden. I can't pass off that it's for her sister b/c as of right now, sis wants a Dr. Porkchop bday . We're not doing CRT this trip (bday breakfast at Chef Mickey's and dinner at Akershus- now that I've reworked our plans), so I think we're skipping princess clothing (unless I recycle her Cindy dress!). I also was entertaining the idea of 2 outfits...one before our afternoon break and one after. We'll see.

DD4 is so horribly impatient that we can rarely do countdown games. :( But I think the hotel pool and some of our side excursions on the trip to and from should placate the girls. They know we go on some nice trips for DH's job, so it's something they'd buy.

Thanks! And best wishes with all of your trip planning fun and surprises.

We are also doing a surprise trip to Disney for my daughters 7th bday.- We too are driving! But we are not going to say anything. Just that we are going on a road trip. We are 7 weeks out and they have no clue we are going anywhere. We will not even bring up the trip until we have to. Either because we have to pack or my daughter starts really bothering me about her bday party!

I am worried to say we are going somewhere and them being upset! Kids are funny that way. So we are just going with a road trip! We too will have an overnight stay at a hotel before we get there.

I think you have some good ideas though! Its so exciting and hard not to talk about it. I miss count downs with the kids too. We would start our 30 day countdown in 17 days! I will have my own!

I think it's the bday factor that's put us in this position. Usually by this point, we're discussing venue, attire, invites, etc. She knows I'm making an elaborate cake for her for her classmates, but not knowing the rest can sometimes send her through the roof. She knows I like researching travel, so I can do a lot of things right under their noses as long as I don't ask too many questions. I'm sure we'll make it work :D have a great time with your surprise for your kids

Had this happen to a friend of mine but not about vacation. He told his girlfriend they were getting a limo and going out on the town to a fancy restaurant overlooking the city and to a concert afterwards. What he really planned was that they went to his parent's house to watch home movies.

FAIL!

This wasn't the one I was thinking of but it is pretty much the same idea. I tried to find the one that I originally saw - it was featured on a late night talk show but I can't remember which one, and I couldn't find it. I would do a scavenger hunt or something to surprise them - but definitely not lie to them. it's hard to do - i'm trying to give my hubby a surprise party on Saturday and its killing me trying to keep this is a secret - not b/c I want to tell him but I keep making up weird excuses why he can't go in the storage unit and why we can't do anything on Saturday. :brick:

I agree the birthday deal definitely throws us off too. But we have been traveling a lot for her birthdays so we always end up in this position but she usually knows. We will see how it plays out in the next few weeks. I am hoping to tell her we have a surprise for her birthday and leave it at that. It will drive her nuts!!! It will work out!!
