Planet Hollywood Closing?

Do we have a date of closure?

Also.... Random... But can anyone tell me if the restaurant has the "Winifred Sanderson" statue from "Hocus Pocus"? I've read online it was in Orlando, just wasn't sure if this was the only PH in the area.
Thanks!

One of our favorite things about going to Disney is the food. When I talk to friends & family & they go down there & eat at PH or rainforest I cringe.

I think it funny you would cringe. There are certainly lots of people who would pick something like PH, Hard Rock, or Rainforst to somethings at food and wine. My wife is one of those people. Don't get me wrong, I love diversity and more extravagant and exotic fare, but for some all they need is a burger and fries or chicken fingers. Places like PH and rainforest have a place at DTD.

Remember when it opened the line to get in could be hours. Walt Disney Travel Co use to give good discounts back in the day with their perk coupons included in your package. I always remember the service to be bad and the food just OK. We learned in the discount days to eat there at lunch. Can't say I've returned since the Christmas week of the Millennium when dining anywhere was difficult. I would not miss it. A fad that has come and gone long ago. But when they built it, they must have had a long term contract I'm thinking. That was in the era of Disney selling out to outside vendors so they didn't have to do it themselves. A practice in DTD that continues on.

Yes some people like that stuff & to each their own....others I think just go there because it's familiar and they are afraid to branch out which is a shame. I at least get why people go to trex....I've never seen one elsewhere....& kids love it. My son is a teenager now though & he wants good food as much as we do. I'm not saying get rid of all of them but I won't be sad if PH goes the way of the dinosaur but that's just me.

I'm not sure why so many people don't like this place. I've eaten here 3 times and while the service is sometimes slow, and the food is not all that special, the theming is pretty awesome. This place falls into that category of "You get what you pay for". It's differant, it's fun, and while the meals are mediocre at best, it is what it is... a cool and fun place to eat once or twice. It's anything but classy, but how cool is it to eat in a world shaped building with the car from Beverly Hillbillys hanging from the ceiling? If you want classy, eat at Narcoossee's at Disneys Grand Floridian. If you want quick and fun, eat at Planet Hollywood.

Thanks Adam! How long have you worked there?
I've only been working there since this summer, so to be fair, I'm so low on the totem pole that anything could be happening that I wouldn't know about, but from the plans they've told us, they're simply redoing the outside. We're not going anywhere.

I actually agree here. Like anything, PH could use some TLC and some refreshing from time to time, but the concept is good, and fits Walt Disney World.

There are plenty of upscale restaurants in and around Walt Disney World. But WDW is also a tourist mecca, and there is no better place for those themed restuarants that families love. I did not "guote" the one from the last page (because I could not figure out how two quote from two different pages), but @TP2000 indicated there that restaurants like this, Hard Rock Cafe, NASCAR Cafe, and Rainforest Cafe, among others, were dated and that it was a good time for Disney to bring in more "sophisticated" restaurants. A few thoughts:
  • Walt Disney World already has many upscale restaurants (as mentioned above). I like them, but I think a family fun restaurant clearly has a place here.
  • I do not think of the concept as dated. Just need to keep the exhibits refreshed from time to time. I am youth leader at my church, and when we take the teenagers to Washington, DC, they still love Hard Rock Cafe there. And others who have gone to the Rainforest Cafe still love that.
  • "Sophisticated" was not always a compliment. (Look it up. Its primary definition used to be, and should still be, related to "sophistry," as in "using complicated arguments or contrivances to appear more complex or mature than the subject really is." Another word for it is "urbane." It was used to insult someone who was "putting on airs".) All I am saying here is that "sophisticated" is not always a compliment, and really may not work here in WDW as much as family entertainment.
  • I think that the food should always be good. If they are going to be a family-friendly tourist restaurant, then they should be the best at that that they can be.
So, I guess my overall comment is that I think it is still a good place for Planet Hollywood, and it is a good concept for families and regular vacationers. It is not "sophisticated" and doesn't need to be. But it should be good (the food), and as a whole could stand some TLC.

I love the famous props, and I think it is still cool. Just needs some refreshing.

Which was one of the issues with PH. Hard Rock Cafe has kept their memorabilia constantly cycling through, and they regularly play/host concerts from musical acts from all genres of rock (even brand new acts). PH tied themselves to actors like Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis, neither of which is terribly current. Adding in the amount of "stuff" in movies that is no longer real makes it a much harder sell.

I love Planet Hollywood in 1991 for my Graduation and the food is awesome! And I hope Planet Hollywood won't close. Because I would like to keep open Planet Hollywood forever!

I can agree there. They need to keep it fresh. I believe that at one time Sylvester Stallone was an investor in PH. But even he knows that the mix of artifacts from movies can and should be refreshed. (Kind of like our perpetual Great Movie Ride argument.)

Always found the food to be just ok but the Cap'n Crunch Chicken is my favorite "chicken strip" ever. The only one close to us is in Vegas...there used to be a couple of them in So Cal.

Thanks for your input, @Adam N . Looks like you are new to the forums. Check it out. Good people here (and some others... lol).

Don't get yourself in trouble, though, if your management reads these forums. But thanks for the info and insight. As you can tell from my comments above, I hope PH stays and just gets refreshed more often. That would be great for them, I think.

Never had those but they are the only reasons I now have a ADR in Jan there :)
