places to buy groceries

i read a few posts but would like to ask again if there is a place like goodings on the property. and how far it might be, best way to travel there...don't want to leave the park

if we have a room, like a villa, with a full sized refrigerator it would be handy to have some basics: milk, butter, jam, PB, yogurts...so on

we'll have a dining plan but with kids i know they'll be hungry (me too) right before bed. i also will be getting up before them in the morning so i might want to have a bite before breakfast.

Friends I know used www.gardengrocer.com to have their groceries delivered right to them. They had no complaints but they did say the prices were a bit high. But you're on vacation...who wants to spend time in a grocery store.

On my last trip I sent down a package of food and snacks via UPS right to the resort. To be honest we didn't end up touching any of it. But since you have a villa I can see how the food may come in handy.

Cheers!

WDW itself covers approximately 47 square miles - about 25% of that is developed.

Anyway, back to your original question. There are no grocery stores per se ON WDW property, but most of the hotel gift shops do carry grocery items, or the local Hess Stations carry a limited supply of snack items. If there's something in particular you want, you might want to consider packing a suitcase of snacks from home.

If you have the time and dont mind walking a bit the goodings is in the downtown Disney area so you could take a bus to DTD then walk over to goodings then back. If you dont need that much it wouldnt be to bad.

When you arrive use a town car service like Quicksilver to transport you to your room. You are looking at just over $100.00 round trip from MCO and you get a free stop at a Grocery Store. It is nice when you come down the escalators and someone is standing there with a sign with your name on it. Then they take care of everything and drop you off at your resort.

Another option is to take a taxi to Goodings, or just down the road to Winn Dixie which is cheaper.

Last option I can think of is rent a car, but this is more expensive than the car service.

Go with the car service!

I also had success sending some items down by UPS beforehand. However if you are just looking for basics you can find them in Vacation Club resort gift shops such as Beach Club, Boardwalk, Saratoga Springs. We saw items such as peanutbutter and jelly and bread. If it is just some extra snacks to tide you over or breakfast items, you'll probably find all that you need.

Since I think it is your first visit you should be aware that WDW is huge. Take a look at this map to get an idea.

To give you an idea of the distance by time, from Saratoga Springs (near Downtown Disney), once you are on the bus it could take you 20 mins to reach the Magic Kingdom. If you have dinner reservations in a park and you are travelling from your hotel make sure you leave at least 45 mins to get where you are going.

Have a great time!

All the DVC resorts/resorts with villas have more options in their gift shops/general stores than the other resorts do. Nothing awesome, and the prices are yikes-a-riffic, but they'll have your staples, milk and bread and cold cuts and pastas and some frozen family dinners and stuff like that.

So if you're planning on staying in a villa anyway, as long as you're just talking about some basic options, you'll probably be able to get what you want there.

In the past when we went we would just rent a car for the day we arrived and the day before we leave. We use it the day we arrive to go shopping, my wife loves the outlets, (the Disney Character Outlet is the best). We also go to Pulbix which from what I have seen is cheeper than Goodings. There is a Publix right near the outlets right off of I-1. Depending on the car rental company there are a couple including National that have a drop off center near the Magic Kingdom and also at the Dolphin resort.

i like the car idea mentioned above by phil. there is something else i had not thought about...getting to the park from the airport

I'll tell you it is the way to go. Just for us buying bottled water almost saves us enough money to justify the cost. I have always used Quicksilver and they have been superb. They are also a sponsor on WDWMagic.com.

There are two stores at Fort Wilderness. One, the Settlement Trading Post, which is easily accesible via boat from the MK, and the other is the Meadows Trading Post. They have the staples plus some frozen meals, canned goods, etc. Prices are high, but it is WDW after all!

I would rent a car for at least a few days. We drive up to the super target and save a bundle on food and drinks. I hate waiting for Disney buses plus we head up to Universal at least once. Oh and the most important reason, Starbucks is in the outlets and I can't live without my Bucks fix.:)

Hess was a great suggestion! We are soda drinkers- they have the cheapest cases of cans anywhere near WDW. However, you do need a car or taxi. In addition, if you have a car- make a right at Crossroads Shopping center (I think it's Rt.535?) about a mile or two down on the right is a Super WalMart- definately the cheapest grocery store!

Good Luck!

Yes, the Walmart is on 535. Also, if you come out of WDW via rte 536, going past Nickalodian and the Marriott Orlando Center, you make a right turn at the next major traffic light which is 535.

Walking to Goodings from DTD is insane IMO, it is a long walk and even longer when you are carrying stuff in the hot florida sun.
