Sounds very interesting. The plot reminds me of Trolls a bit. Here's why:
In both films, there's characters who don't like singing because it related to someone's death.
Also, because this isn't really a musical, it could be like Toy Story where the story is told through songs played in the background. I once read that this concept originated from Disney wanting to have the characters in Toy Story sing thanks to the success of their recent musical films at the time (The Little Mermaid, The Lion King), but Pixar refused to have that, and they compromised by making the songs the way they are in the film today.
Since many of the characters as musicians. I think we will be seeing some characters sing but as part of a performance. Also according to the article reason why Miguel's family hates music is because his Great Great etc Grandmother was abandoned by her husband in favor of performing not because someone dies.

He’s just committed a literal grave act and borrowed — just borrowed! — the guitar hanging in De La Cruz’s tomb. Unfortunately, it’s Dia de Muertos, and Miguel’s well-intentioned deed of grave robbery is badly-timed, and he’s about to be inadvertently sent to the Land of the Dead, where he’ll come face to face with the same great-great-relatives who banned music in his family. Just guess how happy they’ll be when they find out how he got there.

Trailer time!

The first dazzling footage previews the story of Miguel (Gonzalez), whose obsession with music far outweighs his family’s confounding generations-long ban on the craft. Dreaming of becoming a performer, the young boy visits the resting place of his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt), where he borrows the guitar hanging above his grave. However, because it’s the Day of the Dead, his actions propel him into the Land of the Dead where he’ll meet his great-great-relatives and learn the mystery of his family.

I probably won't get to see this until it comes out on DVD. Darn Japan only showing Disney Animated and Pixar movies in Japanese. It looks really good though!

The song remember me written by the Lopez duo (of Frozen) for the film. Sung by a very special character in the movie we were treated to this after viewing 2 exclusive clips for the film. One in which Miguel ends up in the land of the dead, and another showing why he's stuck there.
