News Pirates of the Caribbean closing for refurbishment in February for new auction scene

I'm seeing a ton of discussion about the new scene on Twitter today. For anyone who has ridden the Pirates in DLP which already has the updated scene (or wants to watch a video), but I "feel like" that red head audio-animatronic looks better....

I may be misinterpreting, but I thought the idea now is that they are selling to the townspeople things they just stole from the townspeople (and from the people of other towns).

But the only townspeople in attendance are the ones who are being made to auction their stuff. The only bidders present are pirates.

The townspeople are there at gunpoint and are being forced to carry their own possessions to the square so that the pirates that captured them can auction their former belongings to other pirates. Because some of the stuff is comically heavy (a chandelier, a grandfather clock, etc.) it makes sense that pirates would just force other people to carry it for them.

Well, yes. That's basically what I said. That the pirates are forcing the townspeople to auction their belongings to... the pirates.

That's where the breakdown is. Why are the pirates making other members of their crew pay them for things that they are stealing? From the dialogue that was added/changed with the Sparrow additions, we know that these pirates are members of the same crew, and are sacking the town in search of Jack Sparrow. So, it's not like they're auctioning off the goods to rival pirate crews, as somebody else postulated.

The scene would honestly make more sense if the pirates were, in fact, auctioning the townspeople's belongings back to them at gunpoint. It would also add a nice layer of dark comedy.

Or, ya know, just leave the scene the way it was?

I don't think the Pirates exist as a single socialist collective. There's capitalism afoot.

In terms of the mermaids being removed, I'm pretty much ok with that (mostly because they never worked). I will miss the mermaid tied up in the boat though. Obviously it was an OST reference, but I thought that it fitted in nicely with the rest of the scene. The beach looks kind of empty now that it's gone.

Also noticed that "Jolly Sailor Bold" is no longer being played in the background. I did like it playing though, because it sounded kind of erie and added to the creepiness, but I think this is a good move. There is a lot going on with the song and the audio from skull being played at the same time. Will also say that version of "Jolly Sailor Bold" wasn't the best. Then again, no version could ever be as bad as the one from The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow. That was just downright awful. The version from the movie is by far the best.

I feel like they could have left the mermaid skeleton. That actually looked really neat.

I agree with others that "this is the best they could come up with?". What did they do? Brainstorm lines, put them on a dart board and fire away? I think this is more offensive to redheads than the original (which wasn't at all)!

I agree with others that "this is the best they could come up with?". What did they do? Brainstorm lines, put them on a dart board and fire away? I think this is more offensive to redheads than the original (which wasn't at all)!

The new scene appears to be designed to be as easy and inexpensive to implement as possible, with the exception of the new Redhead figure (with Tarzan's "Jane's" face). Note how the new scene uses the same old "bride" figures, still hunched over, in the same positions, but with some redressed as men in stockings. The auctioneer, bidders, and guard figures are unchanged.

The new scene appears to be designed to be as easy and inexpensive to implement as possible, with the exception of the new Redhead figure (with Tarzan's "Jane's" face). Note how the new scene uses the same old "bride" figures, still hunched over, in the same positions, but with some redressed as men in stockings. The auctioneer, bidders, and guard figures are unchanged.

The new scene is just like any other Disney change. Something inexpensive and done halfway to save a buck, appease the offended and give a reason to help drive the gate price up.

So they got rid of all the mermaid stuff and the talking skull is back at 1:50? I didn't remember seeing him last time I rode. I liked the spooky mermaid music though I wish the would have made actual mermaid AA using these heads on the right, they used to be the women the pirates chased, I don't think they are in the ride at all anymore, but I think it'd be great to pair the song from the film with some classic stuff from the ride

Same. It's one of those head-scratching choices to remove a nice addition that only enhanced the ride and caused no extra expense. Reminds me of WDI Paris' bad choice to remove the projected silhouettes of the fort-storming pirates in their recent redux... a cool detail that was deleted with no replacement and for no rhyme or reason.

I always hated the mermaid skeleton as it changes a lot of the ride. I'm kind of glad they got rid of it as it didn't fit the rest of the attraction.

The scene is the same plot as before. Pirates steal objects from town, then sell these objects to the crew. Before, they stole women from the town and sold them to the crew members. Now its loot.
