Pirates of the Caribbean a kid's ride?

I work with a guy and he recently came back from Orlando. He and his wife have a 3 year old they took with them. Since we both are familiar with all that is down there we talked forever about it. He stated his 3 year old kind of slowed them down a bit, but he still did what he wanted for the most part and it was fun seeing it through her eyes.

He told me about the Potter ride at Universal and we talked about Disney and such. Then another co-worker is in earshot the next day and he does a 180. He stated Disney is for kids, that he'd never go down there without children and that he was bored at MK. This trip was only for their 3 year old even though they are doing it again next year.

I told him there is no way anyone pays $3000 for a trip that a 3 year old will never remember in the first place and that the trip was mostly for them, their daughter coming along was a bonus. He stated, of all things that Pirates is nothing short of a kids ride. Had he been a teenager and been taken their he'd have been bored and ticked off at his parents.

So who is the crazy one? Him or me (us on here)? I get it how he was embarassed to have the audacity to enjoy Disney on his own merit once other people entered the room but how do you explain Pirates being a kid's ride?

Not everyone has to like Disney. Seems like this guy thinks it is a chore to take his child there.

As for Pirates being a kids ride. I would say it is more of a family ride. It is slow except for the not very high or steep drop and tells a light hearted story of a town being raped and pillaged by a bunch of pirates.

You are right and he is wrong. Some people just don't get Disney. I say let them go somewhere else on vacation so there is room at Disney for the rest of us that enjoy it. Who wants grumpy people around you on vacation anyway?!! I sure don't.

I guess I'm a 51-year-old kid!

Don't worry, your co-worker sounds like he's embarrassed to admit he likes it except when it's safe with someone he knows understands. His problem, not yours.

My teenage son complains a bit when I drag him on IASW [I still do it, but he whines ], never POTC. He gets much more upset when I do my occasional solo trips. Like in two weeks! :king:

As others have said, some people are either embarrassed to enjoy or do not understand Disney at all. I get it a lot while at school, especially the common, "It's hell on earth!" comments. But I have friends that understand and we pity those people. It's nothing to be ashamed of.

As for Pirates, I'd say it's a family ride. My niece, turning 10 next year, has ADD, and she'd love it one trip, but cry and be scared of it the next (and she's been going to The World since she was an infant!). I even once saw a child cry because he was scared of riding Dumbo. It really all depends on the child, but for the most part I think anyone and everyone can enjoy it if given the chance.

My two teenagers (14 and 19) LOVE WDW! Probably not as much as my wife and I, but they would definitely be upset if we didn't take them with us. I consider WDW to be the ultimate family park; there is something for everyone of all ages.

As for your co-worker...he's entitled to his own opinion. Even though we know he's wrong! :lookaroun:ROFLOL:

I love disney trust me more then going anywhere else, but i can also see things from his point of view.

Hes right,IMO, that if you brought a teenager to Disney world there isnt much excitement like at other parks.4 count em 4(or 5 now that i think about it) rides that hold exciment for them. Space mountain(which for a big scaredy cat like me is nothing) ToT and RnRc(rocking roller coaster)and mission space, throw Soarin in there too if you want.

Thats IT nothing else, nothing that makes the heart pump, the adrenalin going, and the g-forces hold you in. So from that point of view i would say it is boring to MOST people. Most people like that stuff, some dont.
To each is own i say, you like it or you dont, i dont ever try to sway people one way or another.

As for me im a big chicken so i like WDW :)

Well see and that's the thing, his tune changed as soon as another person was around. It kind of went like this while I was at work:

"Disney World sucks! It's just for kids!"
"No, talk to John, he went with his 3 year old and complained she slowed him down"

John: "No, we went only for her. I'd never do it alone."

In other words he was probably embarassed that he had the nerve to enjoy that park and refused to admit it in front of skeptical people, unlike me.

The thing is he then went on a rant about how everything is for kids and nothing appeals to adults. I tried to explain stuff like Pirates, HM, Splash, stuff that is fun but as you get older is also something that you can appreciate with the theming and the attention to detail. His response was that had he gone to Disney as a teenager he'd have probably thrown things at a Pirates while on the ride.

I loved WDW as a teenager and even more as an adult and I fully could seperate the thrill park of Cedar Point in Ohio to WDW. I prefered WDW, still do, despite loving Cedar Point. So I don't get the ones who don't. But if you want to pick on Peter Pan, Snow White, Dumbo, Mad Tea Party and stuff and call them rides directed at kids then go ahead. I still love them, but how in the world can a person figure Pirates is directed at kids. To me I've always felt it was a ride for EVERYONE. It is commonly thought to be the most popular ride in WDW.

To each his own, but for me the whole Disney experience is just a step out of reality. I go to Disney to feel like a kid again, to forget about life and work. I have a 5yr old daughter whom I have seen with the look of excitement on her eyes every time we go and that for me is enough, but I myself probably have the same look on my face. I have friends that do not understand my fascination with Disney but that is well within their rights not to understand and maybe they have their own ways of relaxation and good for them, everyone should.

Pirates is a ride that is enjoyed by the young and old alike. Its one of my faves and I wouldn't be ashamed to say so.

Disney is for the young and young at heart. Disney is not for grown ups. Good thing I never plan on being a grown up.

Hmm. If you are a known Disney crazie of the workplace...maybe he thought that if he told you that he really did not like it you both would then have this long discussion with you trying to persuade him to see your side. But now he tells you what you want to hear and tells others who might not care as to how he truely feels or what he thinks about WDW his true feelings and he doesn't have to deal with trying to be persuaded. Some people enjoy Disney. Others do not and believe it or not... they are allowed to feel that way.

I have been to WDW many many times... I personally would rather go elsewhere. Thing is my kids(5,10,11) absolutely love it and do not want to go anywhere else. My 11 yo has been 12 times...I will probably continue to go as long as they like it. Seeing my kids happy and having fun, makes me happy... so they were not a bonus(as you put it) when they went at a young age. That does not mean WDW is my favorite place to go, but it is my family's favorite place. Crazy thought I know.

This seems like how my job is kind of yet I talk about Disney a ton since I'm about to go.

I get the same things about Disney being a place for kids. I just tell them you just don't understand how Disney really is since most of the people saying all this have never been to Disney.

I tell them go once and then talk to me. So now some at work call me Disney as a nickname since out of a 8 hr day about 4-6 hrs of my day is spend talking about it or looking up Disney items or just seeing what I can do at Disney.

Many just laugh about how much I can be into Disney at my age and talk about how I would live at WDW if I could. My answer to them is yes I would love to live at Disney. :sohappy:

For some odd reason people seem to classify rides without major thrills as kid's rides. I can't see the logic behind that reasoning, though.

I partially blame Disney's marketing these days. Every WDW commercial we get up here are cutsey commercials showing parents with young kids riding dumbo, tea cups, and hugging Mickey. They don't show the badassery Disney is capable of like ToT. So in a way I can understand why most people assume Disney is a place for kids, but it comes at my expense. :brick:

I was JUST talking about this the other day with someone and almost made a thread about it. I think it IS Disney's fault people think its for kids. They do nothing to attract single, or un-married adults there.
