Pin Sharks

I'm not a trader, but I'm hooked on the pins. I buy ones that are special to me (ie, GF Tea Room because my mom and I did afternoon tea there once).

My kids like to trade some, but they ask the cast memeber if they can see their pins (if they aren't busy), and if they see one they like, they trade. If they don't see one, then they say "thank you". When we go down there, we'll buy some pins for trading if they don't have any they want to give up. They leave their "special" pins behind so that they don't fall off their lanyards and only wear the trading pins. I buy them pins to mark "special" things on our trip lilke I get for myself. Ex, my son was scared to get on ToT, Space Mountain, and RoRc. This past years trip, he did all three and loved them. So, he got ride pins to "celebrale".

I can't believe the nerve of some people to actually grab a castmember to get a pin. How rude.

I agree, that is very rude to grab your lanyard. I would never allow my daughter to do that. I know I'm going to get in big trouble for saying this but...here it goes anyway.... If people would teach their children how to behave, appropriate/inappropriate behavior, etc.... then most problems would not exist. The BIGGEST problem is I've seen adults do this to CM's. Didn't their parents teach them appropriate behavior?

Next topic....The Emporium!!!!!!!!!! OMG! That store gets me in so much trouble and completely blows my budget EVERY time I walk down Main Street, especially on the way out. I'll look for you on my next trip. I know I'll be in there spending WAY too much money.

Heh. I only have 6 pins myself. I don't trade... I just buy the occasional pin that catches mt eye. I'm thinking of maybe getting a lanyard when I go to MK in a couple weeks just to display them on at home. Currently they're all on a shoestring I got draped over my computer monitor.

Which ones do you have? I have Crush from Finding Nemo, Mike from Monsters Inc., Flik from Bug's Life, and the alien from Toy Story.

Trust me, it's A LOT of pins to me, and I've been collecting them for the last year both from visits to the parks (getting a couple each visit - last year we had passes and so we were there every couple weekends), from finding things I like on ebay (and hunting down good deals!) and the occassional trade from a CM lanyard.

There are people who have 3,000 even 5,000 pins! That's psychotic to me! Then again, they're crazy and get every pin that comes out just because it's rare and then several of it to trade. No way, not me. I get pins I like and it doesn't matter if they're rare or what. And I certainly don't go nuts with spending upwards of $100 a pin either! I don't have that kind of budget! *laughs*

I, too, felt a bit uncomfortable looking at the pin lanyards on the female CM's on my last trip. I even remarked to one about this, and she said that they get used to it. Still, I would imagine it's still a little creepy having complete strangers routinely looking...there.

As for my overall pin trading experience, this was the first vacation I actually traded, previously I had just bought pins. I was surprised at how fun it was, and got into some great conversations with CM's that were started just by trading. By the way, I am absolutely appalled at the behavior of some guests. No matter where you are, you should never run up to somebody and grab anything that they are wearing or holding. It's just...rude.

I was able to find a plain black lanyard that also holds fastpasses and park passes at AK. Now I guess I have to find pins to decorate it. :animwink:

I don't think I'm surprised by ANYTHING guests do anymore. Annoyed and dismayed that people can behave so rudely, not only to CMs, but to other guests, but not surprised.

And to think that I was massively uncomfortable just looking at female CMs' lanyards, which happen to drape across their...you know...chest.

Never let it be said that I will not try to help out where I can. Just point me in the direction of said lanyards and I will give them a thorough inspection :lookaroun

I bought a bunch (40+) inexpensive pins from a DisneyStore for around $1.50 a piece. Each kid got about 20 to trade on our WDW trip.

It taught my children to approach adults respectively, wait patiently and learn how to get their attention. It goes without saying that they'd look and not touch, and then hand a "capped" pin for trade. And the most important of all..SAY THANK YOU.

My kids also love to trade pins. I felt that it helped teach them not only to be respectful but also to know WHO to go to in case they got lost or someone tried to take them that kind of thing. Whatever they could need someone for and we weren't there, you know what I mean. Last year I was shocked when they traded with a CM and after they said thank you and were admiring their new pin, the CM said that ws the first thank you from a child they had gotten all day and this way at least 8pm. I was shocked by that. But now after hearing that people would grab a lanyard etc., I see how that could be possible. I am not into trading at all. I have a few pins for myself that I love but would never trade. The boys bought me a lanyard and insist I trade, but I just let them trade my "extras" for whatever they want and give them the new pin find.

Pin trading at WDW is purely for fun. My kids don't "collect". Except that they'd look for characters they liked.

As to being polite to adults, its the "job" of parents to teach children manners. That failure is a direct reflection of the parents deficiency, not necessarily the children's.

I have the Mickey head UK flag, Tigger that's on like a jigsaw puzzle piece, Figment, Baloo, Goofy dressed as Mickey and one of Goofy that's not an "official" trading pin because it's all like bronze or something. Oh yeah, and I think I still have pins I bought at the Disney Store years ago of Pete's Dragon and Adventures of Ichabod & Mr Toad. I might have another Tigger pin somewhere too.

I promised my mom when I go to MK in a couple weeks I'd get her a Pluto dressed as Mickey pin and send it to her (Pluto is her fave).

I bought it at the cart selling Komodo dragons and kites in Asia. (On the way to Kali Rapids; it's on the right) I think I saw it other places, also. As I recall, it was $6.99; definitely under $10. There is an AK design in the plastic, but it is easily removed, if you don't want it there. It's the only plain black one with a plastic sleeve that I was able to find; I looked in MouseGears, and assorted shops. Something similar MIGHT be available in The Emporium on Main street.

I saw blue ones like that at Epcot earlier this month, but I couldn't get any of the plastic sleeves to zip open so I didn't get one. I saw them at MouseGear and the Imagination gift shop. But I think they were $10.

Thanks TheMom! It sounds exactly like what I am looking for. Going to try to get it through WDW merchandising today. They seem to be really good when you can tell them exactly where the item is sold.

I thought I was a small-time collector and I have around 200 or so pins. Of course I only like to get the rare, limited edition and signed ones. I also like to get the ones that say the year or motto for the year on it. I love Sorcerer Mickey a lot so I try to find the nice looking ones with him on it and get those too. I have a lot from the 100 years celebration and some from the countdown series. I've got five Magical Moments pins (the 100 year ones). Also, I've got about 90+ of the 100 pins from the Waly Disney: 100 Years of Dreams in the binder. I also have my pins for being a Day 1 Disney Visa cardmember and the series for cardholders. (And some of my most prized pins are from opening day at DL. You received one from every land with your tickets I believe.)

In NYS the job of teaching children appropriate/inappropriate behavior has now been thrust upon teachers. Character education is now mandated by the State Education Regents. Not even the STATE trusts the parents to teach manners. In my school we've had more discipline problems with parents in the school than students. The students see/ hear how their parents treat others and all the character education that we are required to teach gets washed away.

Coastieboy00, I'm sorry you had to put up with that. hopefully you have some recourse available for future problems like this.

Now personally, If my child was as rude as that guest, she would need a standing space on the plane home. , but, not bragging, my children have manners and would very likely speak up to that rude guest....politely, of course. :animwink:

This NYS mom began teaching her kids good manners when they were very young. I thought I did a fine job. That was until they started in school. Then they started to talk back and argue all the time.

I would go to parent/teacher conferences and cringe when it was my turn. They may not be the best students, but they do know how to use those manners. Lil'mermaid gets strange looks all the time because she say "please" & "thank you"...this must be a rare occurance with teenagers because people always comment on it. (both to her and myself)
Why do parents feel that sending them off to school ends their responsibility to raise a decent member of the human race?

Now if I could just get them to stop fighting with each other all the time. :brick:
