The old looks like something you'd see at a generic theme park.
It's interesting you say that considering all those carvings were done by local craftsman actually in Bali so they truly are one of a kind. That's also why I'm a bit sad a lot of them disappeared. I wish they had stayed and just been repainted to the new color scheme. Starbucks in particular looks a bit boring now.

Sorry. Referencing paint scheme

Blink, blink. Breathe, breathe. Day in, day out.
I'm definitely going to miss the old colorful animal schemes.. But it is something I can easily get used to, at least. Considering I have never really spent that much time in this theme park to get overly attached to anything outside of Nemo and Dinosaur anyways.

Toned down. If there is a way to see the above pics full size (I'll make them enlargable thumbnails), it tells the story about the exteriors. Thankfully, some carvings are still there, but there's a lot less of it: The overall change to the Island isn't a step down, IMO, it's just different. I think I might even prefer this newer version...

This one example is indicative of what has occurred throughout:
Before, note the lower Giraffes and Mantises(?):
Creature-Comforts_Full_22886.jpg

After, still has Giraffes uptop and new Monkeys on the signage, but other carvings are gone:

Wow!!!!! I looooooove this new design! Love the monkeys drinking coffee too- haha! That's adorable! Love the mature look that really lets the details shine. I feel like I will enjoy this area so much more with this new look.

There is a huge update over at OTPN regarding all of the work at DAK. Some things that they point out is how the paint scheme is changing all over Discovery Island, the Island Outfitters expansion is actually a new shop with its own name, great photos of the work behind Pizzafari and some late in the day photos of the Pandora stuff to name a few.

Photo update as of Wed, November 11. Disney Outfitters building addition revealed.

In the below photo, at the tower, notice the hole in the center of each animal circle. A close-up inspection shows 12 marks embedded in the animal circles. Therefore, I expect a clock face will appear on the sides of the tower.

The sign detail facing Discovery Island bridge: "Riverside Depot."

Across from Pizzafari, the construction walls were removed and show updated landscaping and lighting, with fresh themed concrete still roped off.

Photo update as of Tuesday, Nov. 17. The 'expansion' of Disney Outfitters at Discovery Island will be a new store. The entrance is marked by a new sign "Riverside Depot." The clock hands have been installed, and yes, that is the correct time. A cast member said the store should be open the week after Thanksgiving.

On the other side of Disney Outfitters, the construction walls have been removed around a new structure. It is not an expansion of Disney Outfitters, but a new stage for the music acts that often appear in this area. Inside the store, there is no customer "entrance" into the area behind the stage, so this building must be inventory/storage.

Photo update as of Tuesday, Nov 17. For some months, work crews have been "refreshing" the sculptures on the Tree of Life trunk. By this I mean the trunk on the Tree of Life has been "lightened" in color. See photos below to compare the lighter color in the center of the trunk, with the upper and lower portions which are still a dark brown. I suspect this was done to give a better reflective surface when night-time images are projected onto the Tree of Life, similar to the short Disney video recently released.

Unless I am very much mistaken, special paint is required for using light to change the color of the tree (for projections in this case). My understanding is that Cinderella Castle began changing color at night after the 25th anniversary because they painted over the Pepto-Bismol pink with paint that could be washed with light, changing its color. Like you, I'd imagine that is the case here, now. Plus they clearly want the park to be stunning by 2017. Even the giraffes on the safari will get a fresh coat of orange.

Having been in AK at night several times, I am beyond excited! All the little things that you take for granted during the day light up at night. and are so magical. Have always loved the little toad stool lights, Dinoland, and Asia are so very beautiful after dark. Already my favorite park, may have to move in now.

I love that they are expanding offering in DAK and on Discovery Island in particular, but isn't it a bit odd how they went about it? The changed Beastly Bazaar to a M&G and Creature Comfort to a Starbucks. But they kept the two merch locations that were right next to each other -- and they added another merch next to them. Wouldn't it have made more sense to spread them around, having merch somewhere else on Discovery Island?

I understand concentrating merchandise on the path as you leave the park to get last minute purchases, but if they were already going to expand merch in that area, I'm a little surprised they didn't put the Starbucks at Island Mercantile and keep Creature Comforts as a merch location.

Not a complaint really, just an observation.

It is utterly shocking to think Animal Kingdom is the owned and operated by the same company that has ran Epcot and DHS into the ground! I was there on Wednesday and found myself in awe all afternoon! Really can't wait to see how the park continues to transform over the next few years.

TRUTH

And we can compare AK and Epcot on very similar projects with opposite results.
The new color schemes of Discovery Island and Innoventions.

One is subtle, mature and in-sync with the park, the other is loud, obnoxious and tacky.

I can't believe how much is/has changed since I was last there, just in May ... I like the muted, earth tone color scheme. I can understand some seeing it boring but I see it as a more mature and adult color scheme that fits better with the rest of the park. Less cartoony should be a good thing.

I also like that they took the time to build that little stage for the acts that perform. Just little things add up and make a difference.

So will Disney Outfitters be renamed Riverside Depot, will this be two separate stores, or will this be like the shops in DHS that have 4 names?

Animal Kingdom is going to be practically a brand new park once Avatar Land opens. New restaurants, new nighttime show and attractions, new and expanded lands, refreshed infrastructure... It will have a become a truly complete park just in time for its 20th birthday.

**One small request: could we get AK a new daytime parade? It would be the icing on the cake if that happened.

If attendance increases due to Avatar, a parade will be a nightmare. It was already an issue with guest flow as it was. As much as I enjoyed the floats, it was just too difficult to walk around the park before, during, and after the parade.

I really don't think a daytime parade will work. A street festival 'parade' ALA Tapestry or using the puppets that were used in the AK parade could work but the trucks or floats? I think that ship has sailed.

I'd rather see DHS invest in a new daytime parade once the makeover is done.

I've also wanted to see either AK or Epcot add a parade on the water, like DisneySea does. But we're starting to veer too off topic I guess ...
