I think you have a great idea to dress this way for prom. You will have many opportunities in your life to wear shorter cocktail style party dresses, but other than your wedding, you probably will not have too many opportunities to dress like a princess in a long ball gown. So go for it and have fun!

Have you thought about going to a dressmaker? Once he/she knows what you want, you can buy the material etc. yourself and have the dress made. I did this with my wedding dress and it actually saved some money.

I've always liked Jessica McClintock dresses. Most of the larger department stores carry them. There is a store locator on her website.
You could also try a bridal shop. Many bridal shops have dresses that do not look like tradtional wedding dresses that can work for proms, but the prices will be alot higher than if you just go to the mall.

My prom dress (years ago...:lookaroun) was a princess-like lavender Jessica McClintock! That line was the one I immediately thought of after reading your post.

I'm tall and slim as well and found that most dresses really weren't too short. Though I didn't have large heels--my date was about the same height as me.

Go for it! :sohappy::sohappy:

(I had a similar experience for my prom. I too went to a private Catholic school. But I made sure to get my $$s worth out of my dress. I wore it five times!)

I had a similar problem in high school (everyone wearing designer this and designer that - and this was the 80's - so EVERYTHING was poufy!). I was lucky enough to find a dress that was actually a little "older" in it's styling, very minimal, very sleek, and totally different from what my friends were wearing. I got a ton of compliments on it on prom night and I was one of the few girls there who didn't have someone else wearing the exact same dress as me! And with a few tiny alterations (took the straps off and shortened it) - it turned into a great cocktail dress that I wore straight through college for formal events. Too bad I am too darn chubby to wear it now - my size 4 days are loooooong gone!

I love Jessica McClintock. I got to wear a really amazing yellow dress when I first saw Beauty and the Beast on Broadway and it was made by her. My Junior Prom dress was one of hers as well. And the dress I wanted to wear to my cousin's wedding was as well, but it was white, so I couldn't. Her dresses are amazing and they always look good on me. Which is nice, because I have a chest and hips and it's always hard to find things that fit me.

I hope you find your perfect dress.
