Per Jim Hill, the Star Wars restaurant is coming.

Yet despite the low crowds it's almost impossible to get into the cantina because of its pathetic capacity. Disney grossly underestimated people's desire to visit the cantina and over estimated people's desire to buy Star Wars merch or simply be OK eating at the cafeteria.

Except they didn’t overestimate the merch...the kyber crystals proves that. I can’t wait to buy merch that’s one of the things I’m most excited about.

If they ordered low quantities, that would mean they underestimated the merchandise demand, not overestimated.

How many gift shops are there in Galaxy's Edge? How many items across those shops have sold out? Disney has a history of stocking shelves with mass produced junk (hats, shirts etc) and then ordering limited quantities of more specialized merch (the stuff people actually want to buy). It's easy to say "they sold out a bunch of stuff" when the items in question had relatively few units made.

I've yet to see photos or videos showing guests full of shopping bags in Batuu. Anecdotal evidence hasn't convinced me people visiting GE are thrilled to buy anything with Star Wars on it.

Regardless, Disney underestimated the demand for dining in GE, relative to shopping. Or at least, anything above basic counter service food (which was my original point).

Agree with you on the dining. Disagree on the merch. Let's just leave it there.

Hate to burst the bubble...

I can't give my sources this time and there aren't public leaks that I can link to (as I often do), but:

There are currently zero plans whatsoever to bring a new restaurant to either of the Galaxy's Edge lands. Everything is on hold other than trying to get Resistance up and running by D23, which looks unlikely. After that, crowds are going to be monitored and information gathered before any next steps are taken (if any). Furthermore, Disney from the top is waiting to see what happens with Episode 9 before they make any changes at all to SW:GE.

Anyone able to coorborate or contradict? @marni1971 @Magic Feather @MansionButler84 @peter11435 ?

I'm more wondering about the "everything is on hold" claim above...
That's a silly claim. Phase 2 was never "green-lit". They have only opened 1/2 of 1 of the 2 lands. When something gets moved to a Phase 2, they at LEAST wait until Phase 1 is done to approve any 2nd phase. That said, the "plan" is to still build the restaurant. Obviously our hotel is still being built and it will obviously have dining.

As an example, TSL has been deemed a "success" and is now getting some additions a year after opening.

Anything else besides the restaurant in TSL? Which should have been there from the start ...

Phase 2 was never approved, but if you have insider connections, you know that TDA is very concerned with the lack of crowds and that any work by WDI for Phase 2 conceptualizing is currently on hold. There was a meeting with several higher ups in Christine McCarthy's office recently... I don't know exactly what was said, but I know several individuals were moved from SW:GE Phase 2 work and placed on different projects.

Could lack of crowds be because the main ride is not even done yet? Why rush to a land that could not even get all of it done in time to open! Sorry but if you go only a few times a year in CA why waste a trip just wait.
