7 & 8 graders having to deal with Kindergarteners?

I think it's a very small school.... Eeyore could explain better, since she works there. Generally the concern is kindergarteners having to deal with 7th and 8th graders, though... not the other way around...

Thats probably the only way they have it... when I went to middle school (7-8, yet its a middle school  :hammer: ), we went from 1 school to 5 schools (6 grade classes really) so its hard for me to imagine my current classmates in the same school with kindergarteners when we were in 7 & 8 grade. :hammer:

I think having a wider range of ages is more common in private schools. My son's school is grades 3K-6, my daughter's is 6-12 (most kids don't start until 7th). There is even a school that has K-12, including boarding students from all over the world...the governor's son (president's nephew) is a student there.

Somehow the nuns had a way of keeping respect in the school..K-8...perhaps it was the whack on the one would get or a crack with the ruler across the knuckles.....and then you'd get it twice as hard from your father when you got home....yeah....that may be the key that's missing today.....a key removed by parents.

...and class size.....how bout 60 third graders in one class?....how the hell did i read DICK and Jane with all those kids?

YOU teachers have it rough today.....and you've become the scapegoat of all the misguided programs of the social engineers who looked everywhere to solve education problems except where it was.....at HOME

....am i getting up on that soapbox again

Tramp, I had that parent conference on Friday and the girl's mother backhanded her in the mouth so hard the kid's mouth was bleeding... I was so stunned she may as well have smacked me in the mouth... This is apparently the way things are done.... I'm not in Kansas anymore, that's for sure....

Tramp, that's one of my soap boxes!! I had another mom tell me she didn't like our school's Spanish teacher because she yelled at the boys. When I told her that my daughter had visited & assisted the class (her brother's and others) and thought they were all (except her brother) a bunch of brats, the other mom changed her tune. I told her she should help out in the classroom some time to get a real feel for what's going on!! I know I have, and it's a real eye-opener!

You're right Tramp. Having gone to Catholic schools from K-12, I can tell you that the nuns, brothers, and priests get more respect than the lay teachers. They hold a strange power over people. Part of it may be the reputation they have from years past.

Class sizes are also much smaller at most Catholic schools, from k-8 there were generally about 15-20 students per grade level. Once I went to highschool, that number jumped to around 25 per class (about 100 per grade level). Except for Latin, there were only 8 of us in that. (gee, I wonder why? haha)

My first reaction is that this sounds like she went a bit overboard....but ya never know what else is going on with that kid that caused her parent to lose it like that....been my experience that parents lose it as a result of cumulative problems.
there is nothing worse than a defiant kid.....it makes your blood boil and ya wanna just belt some sense into him/her...
the problem is that there are far more homes where the kids have never had anyone say "NO" to them, social skills are non-existent, and school is a free daycare center cuz mom is high on crack and dad is nowhere to be found.

In frustration, I once told a parent that I wasn't suggesting how I thought the child behaved at home but that if they wanted the benefit of the doubt they would have to concede that may not be the way the child behaves in the classroom...

And yes, WDWI, in front of the Vice Principal and me, she whacked the kid in the mouth, promising she was taking the kid directly back to family court instead of home so the judge could deal with her.... I felt bad for the mom, too.... she works the graveyard shift at the casino and puts herself through college during the day and supports her and her daughter... The kid is in with a bad crowd.... It was strange to have a parent know her daughter is verity-challenged....

That's terrible!! I am not against spanking when needed, when children are young, but that crosses the line! I very rarely spanked my children's bottoms, but the thought that mom MIGHT hurt them was always enough to keep them in line! Maybe I've just been lucky!

Funny you should mention that, Tramp... I have girls who have had babies while in the ninth grade so the high school will send a van to pick them up, put the baby in day care right in the school all day (and provide all the diapers, formula, etc all day), and take them home in a van at the end of the day. One of the girls explained that this way, by the time she graduates the kid will be old enough for all day head start and she won't ever have to worry about child care....

What a fool I am, not planning my first child for myself at 14.... I could be the parent of one of these brats... Good heavens, i could be a grand parent...

When out with my youngest, I was asked more than once if I had my "grandbaby" for the day (I was over 40) I felt like saying, only if I had starting having them in my teens like you!
