Passholder vs. Free Dining Plan

Good day all! Looking for a little help and opinions here. I am going to Disney Sept 15-19. Originally (before Free Dining came back) I booked under my passolder discount for $266. When Free Dining came back I emailed Pam and she told me I could get the free dining but I had to book a package and pay for a one day park ticket. The difference ends up being about $207. I have to pay for our park tickets now and now I am paying slightly more for the room. My question is.....is the $207 more worth it? I would love to hear any insight and if anyone has done the dining plan if it works out to be worth it. Also, what the heck do I do with that one day ticket? Can I get a no expiration on it and use it whenever (and if ever!) I decide not to be a passholder?

Thanks in advance!

I have a husband that eats a ton so thats why I was thinking of doing it this way. He wants to do at least one character breakfast, we will definatley want to eat at Prime Time and Le Cellier so there's three of our dinners right there. Usually we grab a quick breakfast and then usually do a counter service at a park and then usually a late dinner at our hotel. Now typically we don't get crazy with the sit down dinners but we ALWAYS go to Prime Time and and we always do a character breakfast. I have been to Le Cellier but my husband hasn't so we were thinking on trying it out....

I don't know, I am torn and I can't make a decision to save my life. Thats why I am bothering you people, LOL!
The issue here is the $207, that and the extra park ticket....can it be donated even though it would be in my/my husbands name? Because I would definately donate it. I thought you couldn't buy them and give them to someone else.

Don't forget that certain restaurants count as 2 dinners, instead of one - Narcoosee's counts as two.

I too have an AP and got a good rate at Contemporary with the AP. The problem is we would have had to pay at least $200 more, like you, and we usually eat at Narcoosee, Ohana, Cali Grill, so out of these, the MYW Dining special wouldn't have allowed us to dine for 'free' at each of these each night since we were only going for 3 nights and would have expended 2 dinners at just one upscale restaurant.

I think it is only of value in the manner the DougBray said it is helpful, 4 to a room in a value resort.

We stayed at POR last month and signed up for the DDE card. We stayed for 9 days and there were 4 adults and a child. We saved about $150, but we will also use it a couple more times next year.

All I know is that we used the dining plan for the first time this past trip and we have never eaten that well before at Disney :slurp: The key thing with the dining plan is that you use all your big meals on the plan...if you don't you end up losing money...at least thats what we thought up :king:

I dont think a choice needs to be made. I can tell you I certainly didnt. You cant get an AP discounted room with the Dining plan ( $35 or free with the current special) and you cant use the DDE card with the plan as you arent technically paying for your meals. So the trade off is paying full price (rack rate) for a hotel room and getting the dining plan for free with the current offer or getting the AP rate, Paying the $50.00 for the DDE card and going that route.
DDE will give you more flexibility as you can eat anywhere and the discount goes for alcohol as well
Dining Plan will give you the ability to order anything in the restaurants that accept it without looking at price.
It really is just a question of which style is better for your group!!! Belle

When you buy the $50 card with the Annual Pass, do you get to choose from a lot of restaurants? Or is it just a few? Does anyone have a list?
My husband and I are trying to decide if the Annual Pass is worth it or not. We are DVC members, so we can't do the Dining Plan. Which we are really bummed out about.

Can you still get a discounted rate on your room (ie. post card code) when you book a room w/ the dining package or do you always have to pay full rack rate?

When you book a resort reservation for Walt Disney World, you can book either a room-only reservations (with CRO) or a vacation package (with WDTC.) Discount offers are released from time to time, but for one type of reservations or the other, never both (although simular offers may be released for each at the same time.)

Most discount offers (AAA, Passholder, Florida Residents, etc) apply to room-only reservations, and cannot be applied to a vacation package. There are some discount offers (Stay,Play, & Dine for example) that apply to vacation packages, but cannot be applied to a room-only reservations.

Note:
Disney Central Reservation Office (CRO)- books room only reservations and can sell tickets as a separated transaction but tickets are always paid in full at the time of purchase. You can be told the nightly room rate, and the separate cost of your ticket as you are purchasing each item a la carte.

Walt Disney Travel Company (WDTC) - books vacation packages including your accomodations and a select park ticket. These resevations can also include as part of the package a meal plan, airfare, car rentals, private transfers via a limo or towncar, travel insurance and various other components. All the components are sold together as a package price, and therefore cannot be be quoted separately.

Hope this helps! :sohappy:

I just received my PAP voucher in the mail. Does anyone know if I can sign up for the DDE, without first activating my pass? :)

Yes! You can call Disney Dinning Experience directly at 407-566-5858 but due to continuous high call volume you may experience a long wait on the phone. The best option is to simply mail or fax your application to Disney by visiting the Passholder page on the disneyworld.com website and print out an application from there.

You can log into the passholder site with an exchange voucher, but you need to enter your number in a certain way. The website was not originally designed to accept vouchers, so it is a bit confusing.

Right above the magnetic strip you will find a date, followed by a three letter code (normally WDW) and several sets of numbers. For example it may read:

NB000 06/05/2005 WDW:012 Tr: 345 678

The number you would enter on the web site would be:

WDW 012 06 05 05 678

Start with the three letter code, then the 3 digits that imediately follow it, then the date, then the last set of digits on the far right.

In the above example NB000 and the Tr: 345 are not used at all.

Hope this helps!

To Dine or Not To Dine...

We don't have current AP's, but we USUALLY book everything a la carte and do a room only reservation--saving the money.... and making sure that we get to use our AP's for at least another week's vacation before the passes expire.

We were GOING to do that this year before the free dining came out... and staying at a moderate...the savings were not equal to the cost of having free dining for the three of us that qualify.... I have 3 children...but only one of them is over the age of three (my daughter will turn three the week after we are there--we will celebrate her birthday while there)... he's 5... and doesn't eat very much... so between the three meals and appetizers and deserts....we'll be sharing food with our 1 and almost 3 year old... so we probably won't have to buy many extra kids meals for them... so that is also a huge savings... also, when we go to buffet character meals, like Chef Mickey's, my two younger children can have whatever and eat free. :) So that works well for us. :)

Although we enjoy sit down meals at so many restaurants in the world... we opted to stay at Coronado Springs which has a fabulous counter service restaurant that has amazing food--much more upscale then your normal counterservice... so we will likely eat some of our dinners at the hotel...and use more of our sit down meals for lunch at the parks... that way we will really maximize our counter service options several times....

As for the signature dining experience... we are GOING to use two of our vouchers for Narcooses on our 11th anniversary... there is the day we will spend at Typhoon Lagoon...so that will be a counter service day... and that evening we are going to MNSSHP (so we aren't wasting a park admission that day---we paid for the non expiring passes) so we will eat at the hotel c/s that afternoon after getting back from TL. So we'll have NOT used a sit down meal that day which we can easily apply to Narcooses. :) Works fabulously for my way of thinking. :) (We'll need to by my daughter a meal at Typhoon Lagoon so she can get her pail and shovel! LOL...my 1 year old probalby won't care about that THIS trip....).

We've already got all of our ADRs set up....so I'm very excited. We do have Le Cellier...I've never eaten there, but DH says it's great. We are not going crazy trying to eat at all of the most expensive options... we are mainly going to our favorites.... like San Angel Inn, Sci Fi Dine In, Chef Mickey's...whenever we went to MK we'd do one lunch over at Kona Cafe' anyway to avoid the heat and crowds inside the park--we'd dine in air conditioned comfort while we were waited on...the difference in price wasn't that great save for the cost of the tip...and it would give the kids and their accompanying grandmas a chance to rest and recharge their batteries in a way that you can not do inside the parks... this year we are going to try Concourse Steakhouse in the same veing. :)

NOw all I need to do is figure out our airfare.... Oh....I forgot to add that we are staying for 9 nights... we are going Oct. 1-10....since the plan is available up until Oct. 4th....they extend it through your stay as long as you are checking in while it is still in effect. :)

Interesting thought about the upgrading to AP.... if you DON'T already have an AP....you could conceivably do that in person upon arrival, could you not???
