Count me in who'd prefer each park to have parking garages instead.

I also assume they'll use that spot of land in the image above. Nice that they're taking the approach of expanding the parking lot. Hoping for the best, aren't they?

I know people are going to hate this idea but wouldn't it better for Disney to build a few parking garages instead of having a massive asphalt parking lot at all the parks?
Though garages, obviously, take up a smaller footprint and have quite a few more advantages to the huge lots, there is something to be said about the lots being much more efficient to load up and empty out. The back up at park opening in filling a garage would be huge. Cars would never wind their way up ramps, around corners and into spots, then unload with passengers, children, strollers and more without massive traffic jams behind them all.
Park closings would be just as much a horror.

True, I just think it would help free up some room to have the garages, but I get why they aren't the preferred method. I also don't know that I necessarily would love to see a big old boxy garage in "front" of the parks either.

And very true that the load/unload in the garages would probably be a disaster, but somehow doesn't Disneyland do just fine with their parking garage?

Parking garages are extremely expensive, especially when compared to asphalt. They could probably re-pave the entire AK lot twice for less than the cost of a new parking structure.
Doing a quick google search...
For a parking garage, the average cost PER SPACE is $12,000-15,000.
For a regular lot, it can be as low as a only a few thousand dollars.

The cost to construct a parking lot is also orders of magnitudes less than a garage. Excluding the cost of the land on both accounts, paving a parking lot costs about $3-$5 per square foot. A basic parking garage starts in the $50-$60 per square foot range.

If you have the room, there is no question that you build the parking lot.

Haven't used them myself (always stayed walking distance when going to DLR), but I've been under the impression that the parking lots at DLR are relatively nightmares to get out of and less than ideal to get in.

I don't really see much reason to convert to a parking deck unless surface lots are simply not viable due to a need for space. The only place that has that potential issue is DHS (especially if they were to want to expand the park into some of the current parking area). Even at DHS, it might be possible to add surface lots if they are willing to convert some currently unusable wetland (which might be more costly than simply building a deck).

Also, it's worth considering that visually a parking deck is more intrusive on the parks and the ambiance. It's a minor point, but I think it has some minimal value.

It's worth noting that Disney is building parking decks at DTD. Of course, that would tend to have people coming and going at different times, so it's more viable.

Someone has to say it...

So it Disney Dollars a garage would cost $24,000 to $30,000 instead of around $6,000 for asphalt. ;););)

Soooo....they are assuming Pandora is going to be popular? :joyfull:

Pandora and Rivers of Light absolutely will bring more people to the park, though some of that will be shifting attendance patters from morning-to-afternoon to afternoon-to-evening. IMHO, though, I think it won't add more days to WDW for the vast majority of people, but just shift time from the other parks to DAK.
