Packing Luggage

How soon before your trip do you pack your luggage?
I usually start packing a couple of weeks before the trip.
But, there are 5 people in my family & I have to pack for 3 kids, so it takes awhile.
I am an organizer by nature & I like to plan everything.
I don't want to forget something, so I make a list & as I pack the items on my list, I mark them off.

HaHaHa... sounds just like me... I have 3 pages with 2 columns, 1 column for "Buy" (which also included items I have already) and 1 column for "Pack".

I have an MS Word Doc printed out that contains a list which is broken down for each day of our trip and within that date it includes which park we are to visit, when we should be up (EMH's listed), when we need to be at the bus stop, if its going to be an in-room breakfast or not, where to have lunch, where dinner is for that night and the reservation #.

I also have seperate MS Word Doc's for each park and a list of every ride we want to go on (which pretty much includes them all, except those for the little ones.

We have 2 schools of thought in our house. We're planning a trip in September and my wife is already "squirreling away" items now. She'll have her list started as well and will check it numerous times up until we're leaving the house. There will be little designated piles all over the place until the evening we actually pack it into the luggage.

In my case I'll get everything together 2 days before, and pack the evening prior to departure, verifying my accumulated items then. I've been there enough to know what I have to pack and as a savy business traveler, I know I can get any forgetting toiletries items I need (though I have this in a toiletries bag all the time anyway). I figure packing for a vacation shouldn't be stressful or I can ruin my vacation before I even leave, so I don't worry about it. Of course, my wife has to query my packing from her notorious check list and it drives me crazy (:brick:), but what can ya do?

Some people are not good travelers and stress about it (my wife for example), so she feels more in control with her process. It's a good way to address it.

My only recommendation to households like ours (that use the 2 schools of thought), is that the early-bird-pre-packers should not be too insistent on pushing their methods on the other. Everyone needs to approach the vacation with a clear mind. :sohappy:

Well my wife and I had a blow-out with each other in the mall the other day while shopping for cloths, so maybe someone with a little more insight can respond to this one:

I told her we need to have at minimum, an extra shirt and under clothing for each day because of how hot its going to be. I told her that being out the door at 6:30AM until early afternoon you will want to return to the room and relax and shower and your not gonna want to put the same stuff back on after showing. Well she got mad because she thinks its a waste of money buying 2 sets of cloths. Am I right or is she right?

We always make a list for each son, mom and dad. How many pair of these and those. That happens about a week before. Since we are driving this time, and staying where there is a washer dryer, (SSR), we won't need to bring as much clothes. But still, we need to be space consiuos (sp)?, because we have a fridge that is powered thru the cig lighter. Hey, we don't smoke so we might as well use them. But I still can't find a roof bag that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, we don't have a roof rack. So until then we may not be able to take it.

i am an over packers. hubby hates it, but when he or the kids need something i more than likely have it packed somewhere.

i always pack an extra set of clothes.
always extra socks, undies, even way too many shoes/sandals. i even bring the magnifying glass.

i also start packing at least a month ahead of time, figuring out what luggage i will bring, which will be carry on's, which will be checked. i start putting things in the proper place as things are bought or not needed around the house for everyday stuff.

hubby gets his 1 small bag and fills it the nite before, well now that i think about it, he fills it right before he leaves. lol

Have you looked into renting a rooftop carrier?

I'm an overpacker too. I always plan for two sets of clothes per day, especially in the summer. Who wants to put sweaty smelly clothes back on after an afternoon swim or whatever?!!!

I start packing months ahead really. We always go to FL for a week in February, so I pack clothes for that when I put away all our summer clothes in the fall. I restock the toiletries bags as soon as we return from a vacation, so they're always ready.

I usually take only one "outfit" per day, with a few extra changes of underwear for after swimming. We'll often go swimming mid-day, but I don't mind putting the same clothes back on after. I figure I'm going to be sticky again within 5 minutes of walking outside (we go in August), so what's the point. And I know there are laundry facilities at the hotel if something drastic happens and I end up going through clothes faster.

In the summer I bring two pairs socks and undies for each day since it is so hot and I hate putting back the same after we go in the pool and back out to the parks for the evening. Sometimes I change my shirt, so I generally bring at least 3-4 extra for a weeks stay. If I run out, well I just buy something, since I am opposed to doing laundry on vacation.
