sorry but..

I commented on this situation , on this forum, three, or four years ago..

Orlando went from one of the safest areas of the country to on of the most dangerous. and its not even close.. CNNFN and other sites break down cities by safety.. and Orlando is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.

and I blame the mayor and the city for allowing the filth to come into the city.

again. I have been coming through Orlando, when it was a wide spot on the map.. clean, pretty.. no strip joints, or true urban crime, because it wasn't URBAN..

but the short sightedness of the city fathers, who had a gold mine in their hands, and allowed the town to become a true dump...

trust me, we traveled through Orlando coming back from NASA about 15 years ago.. and back then it was a totally sick road.. and not one that you wanted to drive at night.. the Orange blossom trail is about as dangerous as you can get..

and I know that there will be others here who will "rush to the defense" ..

and all I say is get into the car and drive that road from the Bee Line to NASA.. and then come back and tell me , just how safe Orlando is..

Could you cite some examples? Or did you just feel threatened in general as you sped down the road at 50 mph? And I just have to comment - if you don't like Orange Blossom Trail now - you would have crapped yourself 20 years ago. That stretch has seriously cleaned up compared to what it used to be. Like any major city - if you are a tourist - don't go off on some adventure in neighborhoods or areas you don't know. It's common sense.

I don't think most of us were disagreeing about Greater Orlando compared to other metropolitan areas.

But Avvo is generating publicity for itself by saying it's an unsafe spring break destination, when most spring breakers don't go near the extremely dangerous urban areas you're talking about.

WOW, Talk about calling the kettle black!!! An article written about Orlando from a reporter in Atlanta!!!!! Maybe he needs to fess up to the fact the his mention of Daytona in his article as a dangerous place to visit during Sping Break is mainly attributed to a specif period during which the trash and scum come down from the "ATL" and the fact that 95% of them don't even attend college. They come into town for 3 days and by the time they leave, end up causing more damage and crime than the entire whole of spring break, race weeks and bike weeks combined!!!!.
As for Orlando there are a couple of small areas that all the problems are confined to. Our most infamous area is Pine Hills, affectionately refered to by locals and the OCSD and Orlando Police Depts as "Crime Hills". Another is the Parramore area near the Citrus Bowl. And of course the O.B.T as mentioned.

from TODAY"S CNNFN...

http://money.cnn.com/2011/01/10/real_estate/overvalued_housing_markets/index.htm

when you are listed as FRANKLY DANGEROUS, in the first couple of sentences,
I think you have a problem..

and this was posted in tonights CNNFN, or CNNMONEY..

Orlando is a pit right now.. and the city fathers are to blame.. INSTEAD OF BEING TOUGH ON Crime and smut, they allowed it to flurish with a passion..

and now you have what you have.. and its not pretty..

Just to be sure, you realize the "Frankly Dangerous" rating was in reference to their (Las Vegas and Orlando) housing markets, right? As in the analysts at the heart of this report don't expect a rebound until 2032. This has nothing to do with crime...

But unfortuntely, you didn't have these kinds of reports to look up on the internet to bias your opinion. Like so many people, you probably didn't even notice...

trust me , me, my wife and my kids all NOTICED.. We watched a brand new hotel, go from a place where 8 people were on the phone 24 hours a day, taking reservations.. to a place where the last time we stayed there, a guy got shot.. to when we drove by , last year, it was half bulldozed..

this economical hotel was so nice, that my wife, booked, a person from the local LaCrosse newspaper, into the same hotel. and in fact, he got our exact room, the week that Mark Lee from Wisconsin, was going up in the space shuttle..

and the guy raved about it to every one else at the newspaper and in the LaCrosse area.. We booked my own brother in law into the place..

stayed there three times without incident.. and then.........the whole area changed.. drastically.. right by Florida Mall. finally we stayed one "last time"... and in fact, we almost decided to leave the place, in the middle of the vacation.. because of the safety factor...

the next time we stayed at the Holiday Inn main gate west.. and that area, was starting to look bad.. a year after we left, it became the Saralargo..

finally last year we stayed on base.. one I was shocked with the security.. but two.. I was REALLY HAPPY with the security of staying on base.. especially after leaving the park and driving to Kississimee to go to Walmart..

wholey moley.. we counted at least 6 abandoned motels.. just out and out closed and fenced.. and the whole area , the "big tourist trap" now was just becoming, a trap with little attention to tourism..

the situation on a whole is very very bad..

trust me , we noticed.. and now I wouldn't recommend anyone to stay off base ever again..

A lot of things you point out have nothing to do with crime - and a lot to do with the economy. And are you speaking solely of Orlando - or Central Florida in general? And I am kind of bewildered that you are making claims about ALL of Orlando when you really have only been to a few places. Have you ever visited Downtown Orlando? Hunter's Creek? Windermere? Winter Park? Baldwin Park? These are all extremely nice areas that have extremely low crime. Instead you havve cited (basically) outskirt tourist areas where you would expect more crimes of opportunity....

Take a trip to Camden NJ and then get back to me. Until then :snore:

These studies fail to look at the obvious: Orlando/Central Fla is the most popular tourist destination in the nation, and in the top 5% most popular on the globe.
-If you are reeling in more people, this obviously increases your chances for problems.

Just use your head, play it safe, educate your kids on how to travel with common sense, take most studies as a grain of salt, and have fun.

Interesting....

I have been going to Orlando since the year I was born in 1971. I grew up in Florida-Ft.Laudedale and have been to Orlando with my Parents, Grandparents, myself,Wife, Kids, and Inlaws for over 40 years. I have never been a victim.

I think people just need to be smart. Dont go to certain areas you are not familiar with at 2 AM. The article makes it out to be that as you are entering the Magic Kingdom entrance, there are Snipers and Rapists waiting to rip your women out of your moving cars.

I Was born in Brooklyn NY and then raised in Miami and Ft Lauderdale..... Those are places that are far more dangerous I feel.

I was just there for a week with my family and was all over Orlando and honestly never felt as if I was in anykind of danger. Again, just use common sense.... Don't look like Clark Griswald with a pac, a Mickey Teeshirt, and a Rolex dowtown at 2 am..... But hey...isnt that ALL CITIES?

So they have to mention Disney as part of the "most dangerous" area? How would they feel if I posted my version of the article:

At the home of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta Georgia, when the spring breakers are not on spring break murdering people in Florida for those 2 weeks every year, crime in Atlanta is well above the national median and has been a major problem for the city since the middle 20th century. In 1994, Atlanta was ranked the most dangerous city in the country by the Morgan Quitno Press. Despite a rapid decline in crime, Atlanta still has some of the highest rates of crime in the country.

How about the rest of the year Atlanta Journal-Constitution?
