Oh okay that makes more sense.

I wonder what the process is like if you tell them you’re not moving. Do you get to stay with the company until they actually move, even though at this point you’re a lame duck of sorts, or do they kick you to the curb sooner?
They let a bunch of people go right before Christmas who said they wouldn’t be moving even though that won’t happen for at least a couple of years.

I think if you declined the move, it was probably understood that you’re either going to step away on your own or probably expect a pink slip at a certain point and time. But don’t quote me on that.

Huh yeah I’m not surprised. That’s why if I were there, I would totally just tell them I planned to move even if I had zero intentions of doing so, and take my sweet old time finding a better job.

You’ve been quoted!

Disney recruiters have been hitting me up like madmen (I live in Orlando). I had 3 message me on linkedin on the same day and one even referenced one of the other recruiters before I even got a chance to write back.

One was about a DISNEYTECH job which evidently will be Lake Nona, and another was with corporate and they asked me if I'd consider moving to Burbank/Glendale although living near a regional office was fine either way. It was confusing.

I'm guessing they are hiring like crazy which is surprising because Disney was historically the type of place you applied knowing that position got 4million other applications and you were lucky to get an automated rejection email.
Move from Orlando to CA ( higher COL )? No thanks.

I have lived in both places. FL COL is by far less than CA. Yes the pay for a lot of positions is less in FL but when you get into more skilled positions, the pay is slightly better than CA in the ability to live your life category.
It’s the “climb” that gets you…or should I say “most”

A long - and incorrect - stance that Disney fans casually toss around is “it’s just like anywhere else in Orlando…it’s just cheaper…and hot 330 days a year…and you can go to Disney world 4 days a week if you want! Let’s all move there!”

The reality is it’s mostly low wage labor….and there’s zero infrastructure…and you’re surrounded by 85% tourists at all times (no community)…and it’s really only housing that’s significantly cheaper…which is subject to ridiculous boom and bust

Every place…every single place…has advantages and disadvantages that mostly cancel out. I just hate it when people are so dismissive of how “easy” it is in Orlando. It’s not all living on vacation .

And that sure as hell isn’t a vote of confidence for California either.

Queue the “Orlando is up and coming…” line. Right. Bread and circuses for everyone 😳

Right. Even if the salary is great and I'd expect it to be far above average salary in Orlando it probably wouldn't give me Purchasing power over there. The market in FL is bonkers but there is *some* stuff even if it means not the newest and nicest area whereas over in LA I'm not even sure a trap house is attainable for 700k

and you don't think it'll be renewed?

I think it probably will. But I can hope it won't.
There’s no way he gets the boot as long as Wall Street is pumping the stock. He’s even a bigger puppet than Iger. He’ll spend nothing and charge more until the products collapse…that’s EXACTLY what the stock wonks want.

Why leave anything behind when you can die a “winner”?

that's the sad truth, but it's the truth. the board isn't going to oust chapek until he starts losing the company a substantial amount of money - until then, he's their golden boy

That’s why he’s completely unqualified for this company and should never have been given that job. Bob Iger is a coward and I hope he lives to see him called as much in Forbes or the Wall Street journal. Dereliction of duty.

And we go along with it…for the most part. The consumer is killing their own product for a Tuesday in April in animal kingdom and 4.5 rides.

I wonder if the gap is hiring?

Bob Chapek's contract is until end of Feb 2023. He'll most likely get extended, but the Disney board don't give long extensions anymore, and keep CEOs on a short leash after the Eisner years. Although I really don't want to say it, he'll likely get a 2 year extension to do more harm to the Disney brand. If they give him only a year extension it would be a sign that they don't have much confidence in him at all.

Maybe I phrased that wrong. I don't think it was either "make the move to FL" or "stay in CA and keep the same job". In fact, one of my friends who declined the move just had his last day at WDI a couple weeks ago.

This seems rather soon to be firing people who won't make the move and hiring new people to work in Lake Nona. What are the new hires going to do, sit on the grass among the mounds of dirt for the next year or so working on their laptops?

Way too early to judge how that will go.

But here’s what’s not too early to predict: if a recession is how you get rid of Chapek…then we want a recession. Just might get it too
