Florida economy is a canary in the coal mine…big booms and quick fallsI’m not sure what your getting at but this thread is veering off course. Nobody is saying Florida has the best economy in the country but it is doing very well.
None taken I know this all too well. In the end I'm not mad I'm happy to call home home again. I'm lucky I don't have kids it's difficult to uproot families its why those with families are leaving the company its just too hard for them.By the way @ULPO46 …I apologize that I sound overly aggressive there. Not personal.
there’s always a disconnect when “wealth” and real estate is debated around orlando. The numbers don’t support the narrative.
i actually think it’s just a bit of customer guilt manifested.
I’m always for the proletariat…never for Comrad Chapek.None taken I know this all too well. In the end I'm not mad I'm happy to call home home again. I'm lucky I don't have kids it's difficult to uproot families its why those with families are leaving the company its just too hard for them.
So most of the staff is Ph.D. level engineers who also do fabricating but just not when they work for Disney, who ignores them and uses companies like Bungalow, Scenario and Nassal?
There is tons of work going on at the Cape to support large projects like the Space Launch System and the many smaller projects NASA continues to develop, not to mention companies like Space X. Northrop and Lockheed are both humming along.
There has been some rebound in canaveral…but I believe they are still down 75% from the nasa days…Titusville and Melbourne were nearly abandoned a few years ago.So most of the staff is Ph.D. level engineers who also do fabricating but just not when they work for Disney, who ignores them and uses companies like Bungalow, Scenario and Nassal?

My sibling knew a guy that worked on the East Coast , lived in a studio apt, took the redeye to LAX on Fri night arrive in CA on Sat morning then took the red eye from LAX on Sun night then went straight to work on Mon morning . This is all to be with wife and kids who still lived and maintained their home in CA. This is a rarity.None taken I know this all too well. In the end I'm not mad I'm happy to call home home again. "If you believe that, I've got some swamp land in Florida to sell you." used to be a saying. What’s ironic is there were many parcels of swamp land sold for pennies and long forgotten that had to be tracked down in the area. Orlando was very “sleepy” when I-4 was constructed.
those parcels where a door to door scam in the early 1900’s…deeds registered all over Florida
... Or people retiring here with large nest eggs.In the last 15 years, Orlando has added a second Porsche , Mercedes, BMW , Audi dealer , added an Aston Martin, Lotus dealer, expanded the Rolls/ Bentley/ Lamborghini dealer ( located in the most dangerous part of Orlando ) expanded the Ferrari dealer, building a second Land Rover dealer , adding a 3rd Subaru dealer etc. So for a below national average salary like Orlando, there is money to support these dealers probably from high income earners enjoying the low tax state of FL.
Oh I'm sure the poor education that could have weighed into CA cast declining the move to the Lake Nona location just a few miles away from the MCO airport runways. Factor in 3K miles away from other family, no longer the generally mild hardly any rain weather of Southern CA, hurricane season every year, food offerings ( comparing the diverse food including ethnic of So-Cal to Orlando is no comparison ) etc could have weighed in. But without a doubt the Central FL housing is nicer, cheaper, newer and probably bigger as long one lives a safer neighborhood,, compared to expensive Orange and LA County in CA. The ones who retire with big nest eggs were the ones perhaps who had their money work harder than they do ( ie real estate, stock market investor ). Some I know who went that route all have something in common in a quote - "The food in Central FL does not compare to where I used to live". The construction going is how many more strip malls, fast food places, apt complexes, can Central FL build out to keep up with the many moving to FL every single week. In regards to overcrowding of schools is rent out make shift trailers to put the overflowing students in. In 2017, FL spending per pupil was $9K per student that ranks FL near the bottom at 45th of 50 states but Friday night lights ( ie high school football is king ) with a number of D1 college football stars playing all over the country hailing from FL particularly from inner city Miami which is a hotbed of football talent.... Or people retiring here with large nest eggs.
While I'm sure some of the folks in Golden Oak still work to pay the bills, I'm going to guess that a large percentage do not.
The thing about retiring in Florida is a cliche but it's true, even when it comes to people without big nest eggs. It's one of the reasons our public education sucks so much - there is a disproportionate percentage of voters in this state that don't particularly care what happens with education, here. They also don't care about other important things like long-term infrastructure because they don't expect to be around to benefit from completion.
Don't get me wrong - I have nothing against anyone's grandparents but they're a big part of the cause for a lot of short-sighted decisions around taxes and spending that get made by politicians in this state.
Maybe one day that'll change and maybe things like this Disney move will help spur that very slow transition (unlike another place we've been compared to, we do have a little more to offer outside our tourist spots than barren desert) but as a resident who's still a long ways from retirement, I am certain I'm happier to see these people and their jobs coming to my state than they probably are to be coming here and I can understand why, completely.
Layoffs and turnover are not new to Walt Disney Imagineering and many Imagineers were layed off in 2020 due to the pandemic.Separate but overlapping concept are the tens of thousands CM layoffs that occurred. Although I acknowledge and recognize the difficult decision of uprooting a life for a move that could potentially end in termination, Disney (whether inadvertently or not) is reminding the company that everyone is replaceable. Some of those that are in WDI have built a mental entitlement safety net. Now that reality is hitting that everyone is replaceable, the shock that thousands of CMs experienced months ago is now seeping into other aspects of the business. The difference being the job is still theirs if they answer Disney's demand to "jump higher"
While trying to be empathetic toward those having to make the huge life decision, there is talent in Orlando that will absolutely fill the needs of the business. Even if temporarily.
If the openings are filled with Orlando talent it is a win win for Disney. Plus no 3K mile relocation costs to deal with hiring Orlando locals as opposed to relocating CA cast and their families to FL which is a money savings for Disney.Separate but overlapping concept are the tens of thousands CM layoffs that occurred. So like all those people coming out of Rollins or Stetson waiting to conquer the world? If the openings are filled with Orlando talent it is a win win for Disney. Don't know about Stetson but I knew some who went to Rollins from well to do families being supported by rich daddy's fortune. So like all those people coming out of Rollins or Stetson waiting to conquer the world?
…now they could pilfer Comcast…will they win that fight?
Stetson's MBA campus is located in Celebration. Just saying. So like all those people coming out of Rollins or Stetson waiting to conquer the world?

Savannah College of Art and Design, University of Central Florida, University of Florida City Lab, and Florida State University all have themed entertainment degree offerings. So like all those people coming out of Rollins or Stetson waiting to conquer the world?

Of course they do…Savannah College of Art and Design, University of Central Florida, University of Florida City Lab, and Florida State University all have themed entertainment degree offerings.
Disney has their “own” MBA training…no upfront cost and you don’t get a degree…and they conveniently deduct it over time from your payStetson's MBA campus is located in Celebration. Just saying.
…pretty much every school in the country. My brother went to school with a bunch of kids who’s dads designed or owned companies that designed early computer networks or parts for Apollo and the ShuttlesDon't know about Stetson but I knew some who went to Rollins from well to do families being supported by rich daddy's fortune.
