Orlando Becoming East Coast Headquarters for Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products

But it ends there…you’re not saving a hell of a lot on daily costs beyond real estate. And what company we talking about whose employees are buying $400,$500, $1.5 million houses?

…I must be on the wrong board?
Pretty much every single ESPNer I know in Bristol is in a $400K+ house.

"Disney underpays" is a meme that no longer holds true.

Nitpicking a bunch there? You make it sound like no one has ever considered "the all or nothing" risk of an area when moving for a job.. where they realize there is a risk of being exposed if that job doesn't end up as expected.

It is very much a factor to consider "what else is there..." when looking at an area and what it means if your job crashes. If the only other job in the area is the hardware store and McDonalds... you notice that your comfy manufacturing or satelite office location really is an island... and that becomes a liability when considering that job/area.

Especially if you work in an industry that known to be volatile
Except TWDC Orlando isn't a "satellite office." Once this move is complete they'll probably have more people there than in Burbank. It's much closer to HQ2 than a satellite.

My biggest concern is that loss of institutional knowledge especially if it is a lot of more senior people who end up leaving.
Disney hasn’t had regard for WDI’s institutional knowledge since the late Eisner years. Iger accelerated that and Chapek’s gonna Chappie.

Put it this way, what does it say about them that most of the senior creative team on Tokyo DisneySea was let go after completion but many of the people who worked on DCA 1.0 and WDSP got to stay for another decade or more?

I've said this and I will say it again, I am not a big fan of this project. A lot of great talent is not up for the move. I didn't mind being sent around the world for Disney, as long as I had an office in a central location the majority of the year in a place where God forbid we have another round of layoffs we have other places to go. Not every Imagineer wants to work for Seas, Six, Merlin, or Uni. I am one of those included who would either go private or work for an Architectural firm.

Why couldn’t you do that in Florida if it became your permanent central office?

Some of these posts make it sound like Disney is moving to a small town in the middle of nowhere with no opportunities. Florida is the third largest state by population and Orlando is growing like a weed.

Unless you specifically work in the tv/film industry I don’t see how finding a job in Orlando would be any more difficult than finding a job in LA.

For the types of roles that are moving, it would be significantly easier.

Ehh... you confuse volume with necessarily quality. Orlando suffers many of the same problems Vegas does... lopsided to the services industry so disproportionately lots of low paying work and not a really diverse, well distributed gradient of wealth or opportunity.

Not significantly different from LA, but a whole lot cheaper.

$57k vs $46k. After the 10% state income tax it becomes $51.3k vs $46k. Rent alone would more than offset that difference.

People have been predicting that Florida is gonna be more than it is since the 1960’s…

I’m sure it will turn the corner any…minute…now…

In the last 15 years, Orlando has added a second Porsche , Mercedes, BMW , Audi dealer , added an Aston Martin, Lotus dealer, expanded the Rolls/ Bentley/ Lamborghini dealer ( located in the most dangerous part of Orlando ) expanded the Ferrari dealer, building a second Land Rover dealer , adding a 3rd Subaru dealer etc. So for a below national average salary like Orlando, there is money to support these dealers probably from high income earners enjoying the low tax state of FL.
