Round Five: Gravity Falls

MV5BMTEzNDc3MDQ2NzNeQTJeQWpwZ15BbWU4MDYzMzUwMDIx._V1_.jpg

Speaking of television, Disney has gained a whole batch of incredible original cartoons over the years. The teen spy adventures of Kim Possible, the imaginative laughs of Phineas and Ferb, the serious drama of Gargoyles. One in particular that stands out is Gravity Falls. With its mix of heart, great laughs, and a story that wasn’t afraid to get a bit creepy, it’s no wonder that the series earned a devoted fanbase.

Considering the show’s woodsy locale, Grizzly Peak at Disney California Adventure seems like a natural place for Grunkle Stan to set up shop.

-Prompt-
Pitch a method of implementing Gravity Falls at Grizzly Peak in Disney California Adventure. It can be an attraction, a restaurant, whatever you wish.

-Rules-
Use only a single sentence to describe your idea. You may also use one image if you wish. The deadline is Wednesday, December 23rd, at 11:59:59 PM EST.

-Tips-
KISS – Keep is simple, silly! With only one sentence, you can’t get too detailed. Think of this as an elevator pitch.

-Judging Criteria-
Is it creative?
Is it realistic?
Does it fit visually/thematically?

Over the course of the summer of 2021, a new symbol will be added to the paths of Grizzly Peak every day creating a new ARG (Like the show was known for creating) that Gravity Falls fans can decode leading up to the announcements of a new Gravity Falls movie for Disney+, an Owl House crossover event, and a new dark ride themed to urban legends and cryptids of Northern California being added to Grizzly Peak.

The Mystery of Gravity Falls

In this theater-in-the-round show, join Dipper, Mabel, Soos, Wendy, Stan and Stanford as the Three Journals bring to life the various legends of Gravity Falls -- Eye-Bats, the Crawlspace (both from Journal 1), Blood Rain, the Cycloptopus (both from Journal 2), ghosts, gnomes and various other things from Journal 3 -- through special effects and other theatrical wizardry, all culminating in a dramatic battle with Bill Cypher himself!

Gravity Falls: Why the Disney Series Deserves a Comic Spinoff

With the demographic that watched Gravity Falls starting to grow up, The Mysteries of Gravity Falls will appeal to them as Redwood Creek Challenge Trail get replaced by a maze with small scares and trippy effects that features Dipper and Mabel going back to Gravity Falls for a thrilling adventure that the domestic Disney parks haven't done.

NORTHWEST MANOR

Explore the lost ruin of Gravity Falls's most rich (and corrupt) family after the events of the show in this walkthrough inspired by the Winchester House and Marc Davis's never built Adventure House concept. This will be a funhouse where guests have to navigate the various rooms while keeping aware of the literal ghosts of the past the Northwests have killed and abused over the years.

Admittedly I’m very unfamiliar with this IP, but here’s my best shot:

The Museum of the Weird

52BA4284-C68A-4454-A71C-2F507DF43B88.jpeg

Inspired by the classic Disney concept and the lore of Gravity Falls, the Museum of the Weird sees a North Pacific lodge turned walkthrough for a variety of oddities like wax presidents that seemingly are alive, spinning hallways, escher staircases, carved watermelons, lawn gnomes, and more eerily creepy oddities that are sure to keep a hold of guests’ attentions.

Round Five Critiques:

@b-wolf95 – Gravity Falls National Park
This is an inspired idea for a seasonal overlay. The sense of exploration and discovery is a big part of the show with Dipper, so this would give guests a chance to experience that. Plus, this could have a fun spooky atmosphere if you were thinking of it as a Halloween overlay.

@Evilgidgit – Gravity Falls, Oregon
Well, the California theme has been falling away bit by bit, so adding this slice of Oregon wouldn’t hurt. This retheme takes good advantage of the wilderness setting already present and mixes in some fun new touches from the show.

@Ludpat Mike – Soarin’ Over the Weirdmageddon
Oh, another fun idea for an overlay! This would make for such a great change to pace to Soarin’, swapping out the smooth international sights for mindbending visuals and the (by equal turns) terrifying and hilarious Bill Cipher. It would add some nice chills to the simulated hang-gliding experience.

@Brer Panther – The Mystery Shack
No worries about barely watching Gravity Falls! Even if this would seem a basic pitch, it’s still a really good idea. The Mystery Shack is such an iconic location on the show and tailor-made to be a fun new merch store. You even lean into that with the mention of photo ops and easter eggs, leaning into the potential of this oddball shop.

@TwilightZone – Mystery Shack Tours
Interesting! This sort of reminds me of Cinderella Castle Mystery Tour, which had a similar idea of a guide-led walkthrough with some spooky encounters. It would make for a really unique attraction, taking advantage of the walk-through potential alone with the Mystery Shack.

@Pi on my Cake – Cipher Quest 2: The Quest for More Cipher
A big swing for the fences, eh? I can appreciate that. An ARG would be a great way to recapture some of that mystery magic from the show and serve as a great promotional method for pulling folks into this news. Plus, a dark ride based around cryptids in northern California would be an interesting method of trying to preserve some of the California theme.

@TheSquirrel – Mystery Shack Mysteries
A choose your own mystery show would be pretty neat. The journals are such a major plot element to the show that this could offer an engaging way to draw inspiration from them.

@DisneyManOne – The Mystery of Gravity Falls
A show like this is not necessarily something I expected, but I dig it. A theater-in-the-round show with spooky special effects and trickery could offer an immersive experience as this story unfolds. In a way, it almost seems like it could be a more accessible descendent of Alien Encounter, depending on how it’s done.

@NateD1226 – The Mysteries of Gravity Falls
Delightful! I know Disney probably won’t do scare mazes anytime soon, but Gravity Falls is an IP where that could work well. There’s enough fun and silliness you could weave in among the small scares and mindbending effects that you could achieve a balancing act that is very much of a part of the show’s atmosphere.

@Solaris Knight – Northwest Manor
Another nice idea for a scare maze. I like the idea of leaning into more of a funhouse route with this, with all sorts of tricks as guests navigate the ruined manor. It might take some careful tone balancing when it comes to those ghosts, but this is something that could offer another prime somewhat scary experience.

@spacemt354 – Gravity Falls Starbucks
This is a neat little tack to take with incorporating an outside company into a Disney park. The pitch is simple, but it does take a standard Starbucks and gives it a more distinct flavor, so to speak.

@tcool123 – The Museum of the Weird
For not being familiar with the IP, this walkthrough sounds like something that would fit the show. Taking the creepy atmosphere and playing with it for this mindbending walkthrough would make for a memorable experience. While it may not have exact tie-in elements to the show, it captures the mood while resurrecting a classic idea.

Round Five Awards:

Ps5WGu1.png

Honorable Mention: @Evilgidgit – Gravity Falls, Oregon
Honorable mention is a place for striking pitches that don’t quite make the mark on the main prompt, and this land overhaul makes for an ambitious way of crafting a new IP land into a park that could use some help in finding its new hook.

Bronze Medal (1 Point):
@Ludpat Mike – Soarin’ Over the Weirdmageddon
Bill Cipher is such a memorable villain and this seasonal overlay for Soarin’ would make such a wonderful (and potentially scary) display of what he can do.

zihTg3C.png

Silver Medal (1 Point):
@TwilightZone – Mystery Shack Tours
A walking tour through the show’s most iconic locale would make for a gripping way to pull guests in as they survey these oddities and find themselves in an adventure right out of the show.

Gold Medal (2 Points):
@NateD1226 – The Mysteries of Gravity Falls
When I think of Gravity Falls, I think of a fun adventure that’s not afraid to get a bit creepy (or plenty, especially in later episodes). This maze captures that feeling for me, offering an experience not really seen at Disney much but fits the series nicely.

Round Six: The Jungle Book

51qv0ish5JL.jpg

Plenty of Disney classics have gotten some theme park representation. Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty has been the inspiration for whole castles, and Peter Pan has a dark ride that has been a staple for generations. However, there is one classic for people that has gone a bit forgotten at the parks: The Jungle Book. People still remember that classic story and its iconic music, so let’s find it a place at the parks.

Specifically, let’s bring this to Asia at Disney's Animal Kingdom. If there was ever a park to feature this movie, then this is it.

-Prompt-
Pitch a method of implementing The Jungle Book (the 1967 film) at Asia in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It can be an attraction, a restaurant, whatever you wish.

-Rules-
Use only a single sentence to describe your idea. You may also use one image if you wish. The deadline is Friday, December 25th, at 11:59:59 PM EST.

-Tips-

Hop aboard a log suspended from the vines for an aerial dark ride through Walt Disney's animated classic, featuring vignettes like a hypnotizing Kaa, a very close encounter with Colonel Hathi's Dawn Patrol, a leisurely river cruise with Baloo and Mowgli and a swingin' party with King Louie, all culminating in the epic battle between the Man-cub and Shere Khan and Mowgli finally returning to the Man-Village.
