THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE: BATTLE IN BIG BEN

1608323437507.png
The UK pavilion now has a Big Ben wienie to draw people into a themed indoor Wild Mouse coaster where they are cast as Baker Street Irregulars sent on a ride through the clock tower to intercept Professor Rattigan in his climactic showdown with Basil, only to be derailed by his ingenious traps and obstacles until the clock strikes 10 for a final plunge to ground level.

Round Three: The Great Mouse Detective

great_mouse_detective.png

Okay, this one is a personal choice from me. The Great Mouse Detective is a sheer delight, offering a fun mouse-inspired spin on Sherlock Holmes, with fun adventure, delightful music, and a thoroughly scene-stealing villain in the form of Professor Ratigan. It’s definitely an overlooked film from Disney’s Bronze Age.

We may have swung by there for the practice prompt, but let’s go back to the United Kingdom Pavilion at Epcot. Though we already discussed ideas for there earlier in that practice prompt, The Great Mouse Detective is one of the Disney films that would most fit in the pavilion thanks to its Victorian setting.

-Prompt-
Pitch a method of implementing The Great Mouse Detective at the United Kingdom Pavilion in Epcot. It can be an attraction, a restaurant, whatever you wish.

-Rules-
Use only a single sentence to describe your idea. You may also use one image if you wish. The deadline is Saturday, December 19th, at 11:59:59 PM EST.

-Tips-
KISS – Keep is simple, silly! With only one sentence, you can’t get too detailed. Think of this as an elevator pitch.

-Judging Criteria-
Is it creative?
Is it realistic?
Does it fit visually/thematically?
Basil's Phantasmagorical Flight
ls308a.jpg
In this ground-to-air dark ride, Basil of Baker Street and Dr. Dawson invite guests to go on, what is meant to be, a pleasant tour of London from a mouse's point of view, until Professor Ratigan kidnaps Queen Mousetoria in a flight contraption, so it is up to use to give chase across the skyline using Basil's all-terrain vehicles to save the crown!

The Great Mouse Detective X Ducktales

iu
To keep the new Ducktales World Showcase experience exciting and fresh for repeat visitors, Disney will offer seasonal expansions, starting with a crossover with The Great Mouse Detective. In this expansion, guests must help Scrooge and Basil with finding a valuable stolen piece of jewelry in the UK pavilion.

that counts right

The Great Mouse Detective: Mouse Trap

images.jpeg.jpg

You have been shrunken to the size of a Mouse and the Evil Ratigan has kidnapped you and your friends (because you are "Basil's friends"), thus you'll have to solve enigmas to get out of this tricky situation in this upcharge Halloween-exclusive escape room experience which will take you through some iconic movie locations such as a Rat Trap room, a toy shop, Ratigan's headquarter (beware the cat!) and the Big Ben!

Observant guests will be able to follow the story of an entire Great Mouse Detective mystery all told through tiny clues, footprints, theming details, and more hidden along the pathways (and mouseholes) of the UK Pavilion with these simple, small details providing an excellent example of environmental storytelling right below guest's feet.

Long Live the Clockwork Queen

A new mini streetmosphere show takes place hourly in the British Gardens showcasing a new animatronic based on the clockwork queen from the Great Mouse Detective before being exposed by Basil and ending in a meet n greet with Basil himself.

Round Three Critiques:

@tcool123 – Baker Street Mysteries
The Play Disney Parks app is something they’ve been using to add some new experiences in the parks for guests, and this would make a fun and economical way to include this lesser-known IP. Playing around as you solve these mysteries could give guests that feeling of being a detective like Basil.

@Pufflefan – “Mouse.”
Ah…MMM….uhm….well, I don’t know what to say.

@Brer Panther – The Great Mouse Detective: The Mouse-ical
No worries if this is all you can think of. Sometimes we all get a little stymied on a project. In any case, a show like this could make a fun way to pass the time and enjoy its story.

@NateD1226 – Ratigan’s Criminal Spin
“The World’s Greatest Criminal Mind” is such a fun villain song, and the atmosphere for it really works for a teacups spinner. Plus, this would be one of the few rides at a Disney park specifically tied to a villain, something that helps it to stand out. A simple but fun take on a classic ride.

@TheSquirrel – Basil’s Bistro
A London Bistro is a good choice for another restaurant in the UK Pavilion, offering a nice option beyond the pub and fish and chips. Also, neat idea to have a monthly screening of the movie.

@Solaris Knight – The Great Mouse Detective: Battle in Big Ben
The clock tower fight is definitely one of the classic sequences from this film, so making an attraction that not only ties into it but also gives the Pavilion a distinct “weenie” to catch the eye is inspired. A wild mouse roller coaster would also add some nice thrill to the Pavilion, befitting the chase between Basil and Ratigan. Clever idea.

@Evilgidgit – Basil’s Phantasmagorical Flight
Really good work here. The rail-suspended dark ride is an under-utilized method, so it’s nice to see some use for a fitting experience with the flying chase from the film. Plus, you’ve borrowed enough from the movie to make it familiar for those who know, but also tweaked the plot just enough so it can stand on its own legs and not just be a “book report” ride. Nice thinking.

@TwilightZone – The Great Mouse Detective X Ducktales
Oh, this is interesting. The new DuckTales series has been doing crossover material with other Disney shows, so tapping into some of their lesser-known movies could also fit this dynamic. In this case, The Great Mouse Detective could fit smoothly.

@Ludpat Mike – The Great Mouse Detective: Mouse Trap
Oh, now this is an interesting idea for a seasonal experience! Disney does tend to bring out the villains more for Halloween, and an escape room tied in with Ratigan would make for a good upcharge experience. I can just imagine his taunts as you try to solve the puzzles.

@Pi on my Cake – Basil and the Riddle of the Road
This can make such a neat touch of atmospheric storytelling for the UK Pavilion. Though human characters don’t factor into the plot of The Great Mouse Detective, it’s still an adventure set among our own world and this would reinforce that with all the little story details throughout. It adds just a nice touch of personality among the grounded realism in the pavilion.

@spacemt354 – Baker Street Detectives
This is another solid mystery-related pitch. I do like you specifying that it would take guests through shops, gardens, and even the phonebooth. It really gives a feel of using this idea to help increase foot traffic around the pavilion.

@b-wolf95 – Ratigan’s Den of Debauchery
Playgrounds can be a bit of a neglected prospect when it comes to armchair imagineering, so it’s neat to see this particular pitch turn up. It takes good advantage of one of the more memorable locales within the film, leaning into the visuals from that scene for play equipment and interactive possibilities.

@pix – Long Live the Clockwork Queen
Oh, interesting! For being a key point in the film’s plot, the clockwork queen tends to be something not thought of as much. This could make for a neat little show, offering a little more life in the pavilion.

Honorable Mention:
@Pi on my Cake – Basil and the Riddle of the Road
Honorable mention is a place for striking prompts that don’t quite hit the mark in the core prompt, and this pitch makes for a more subtle but striking way of adding a little magic to the UK Pavilion with the presence of its mouse characters.

Bronze Medal (1 Point):
@Ludpat Mike – The Great Mouse Detective: Mouse Trap
There were plenty of mystery-related prompts this round, but this one stuck out thanks to its use of the escape room format to have guests match wits with Ratigan.

Silver Medal (1 Point):
@Evilgidgit – Basil’s Phantasmagorical Flight
I won’t lie. Our second- and first-place winners were an extremely close match with both capturing the rivalry between Basil and Ratigan. I really like this dark ride, tweaking enough from the film for it to stand on its own feet in addition to using a dark ride format that has gone under-utilized but would fit so well thanks to that iconic sky chase sequence.

Gold Medal (2 Points):
@Solaris Knight – The Great Mouse Detective: Battle in Big Ben
This also had the rivalry between Basil and Ratigan, and is also built around another iconic scene from the film. That said, this one edged a little further for me thanks to its use of Big Ben as both a setting and eye-catcher. Folks can be drawn to the pavilion by the sight of the iconic London structure and then discover the thrilling wild mouse coaster waiting within.

Round Four: DuckTales

ducktales-disney-xd-2017.jpeg

Let’s face it: Disney’s television shows are sorely lacking any representation at the parks. It’s especially shocking for one series, in particular: DuckTales. Inspired by the old Carl Barks and Don Rosa comics about classic Disney character Scrooge McDuck, the 1987 animated series became a major favorite and a flagship example of the Disney afternoon. It’s so popular that it even got a 2017 reboot series that has been just as strong with viewers.

So, let’s fix this, shall we? Let’s take a trip over to Toontown at Tokyo Disneyland and give this show some love.

-Prompt-
Pitch a method of implementing DuckTales (either the 1987 series or 2017 series) at Toontown in Tokyo Disneyland. It can be an attraction, a restaurant, whatever you wish.

-Rules-
Use only a single sentence to describe your idea. You may also use one image if you wish. The deadline is Monday, December 21st, at 11:59:59 PM EST.

-Tips-
KISS – Keep is simple, silly! With only one sentence, you can’t get too detailed. Think of this as an elevator pitch.

-Judging Criteria-
Is it creative?

Does it fit visually/thematically?

DuckTales Mine Train
ducktales-scrooge-mcduck-disney-huey-dewey-louie-shakhta-kam.jpg

Given the proclivity of Disney family friendly mine-coasters as evident by Seven Dwarfs Mine Train as well as the similar track design of the Frozen coaster coming to Hong Kong, Tokyo Disneyland will get a taste of that action as on the outskirts of the Toontown forest, you'll join Scrooge on a quest through the mine shafts of Red Ruby Valley on this rollicking family friendly 2.5 minute coaster/dark ride experience.

Ducktales: Bin Bang

16-LOC-WOW-ZIO-PAPERONE-bassa1.jpg

Scrooge's nephews (all characters with the 2017 design) have invited you for a secret visit to the Money Bin (building with 1987 design), thus you'll board on a new "tour machine" (a trackless vehicle capable of different movements and also able to simulate levitating and flying) invented by Gyro Gearloose - which, as usual, comes with glitches - , but as you are enjoying your ride the Bin gets attacked at the same time by Magica the witch and the Beagle Boys, so you'll witness the kids and Gyro resisting the attack in a 2 and 1/2 D dark ride, while also trying to stay safe in such a dangerous situation

Launchpad's Flight School
1608475204687.png
Gadget's Go-Coaster is replaced by a new coaster hosted by Launchpad McQuack (the 1987 version, not the one from Gravity Falls Wannabe With Ducks), who has decided to open up a flight school despite the fact that his running a flight school is like Donald Duck running an anger management class - case in point, Launchpad's "lessons" do more harm than good and the planes wind up going crazy, ducking (no pun intended) in and out of various buildings in Toontown, smashing into billboards, and finally taking a nosedive into a lake (but that's all part of the fun!).
