One Last Visit to Key West on the Disney Magic

You might wonder why I titled my trip report as such - well, as soon as we heard Disney would be repositioning the older ships to new ports (at least for the foreseeable future), and knowing the new ships are too big to call on Key West, we booked ourselves a nice, little 5-night cruise on the Magic. Considering she just so happens to be our favorite ship, this took a lot of arm twisting. :ROFLOL:

We planned this cruise about a year prior, with our actual sail date being May 4th. Those plans did not hold up (due to a date conflict); we ended up switching to the May 9th sailing about four months prior to the cruise. About a month after that, I found out I would be presenting at a huge conference in Orlando the week we returned, but we were tired of switching dates around and decided we would just hightail it back upon our return to the port. Whew!

So, let’s get underway!

Although we live only 2 1/2 hours from Port Canaveral, we always drive down the night before to make things easy as possible for getting up the morning of the cruise, and boarding the ship. Our spoiled “puppy” (she’s 15 going on 2) was dropped off at WDW’s Best Friends kennel, and we were on our way to the Residence Inn Cocoa Beach. Since we needed to leave from the port ASAP when we returned from the cruise, we decided against the Park and Cruise package, and I scored a decent state government rate instead (when adding that with the $90 port parking price tag, it came fairly close to the park and cruise rate, so it wasn’t too disturbing to pay that port parking fee - although it still makes me want to gag).

Klondike at Best Friends (she had an itchy eye, which is why it looks a bit dark around it)
Klondike_Seaburn_20120509.jpg

After an uneventful evening and morning, we headed over to the port somewhere between 11 and 12. Check-in was a breeze, we were given boarding number 3 (due to our early scheduled arrival time of 11:00, even though it was past that), and we headed to the supervisor’s desk just to see what the going rate for an upgrade would be. As tempting as it was to book a one-bedroom suite again, we finally decided against it. All our Disney cruises prior to this have been in balcony staterooms (with the last in a one-bedroom suite), and we promised ourselves we were going to try out an inside stateroom just to see how we would like it. I figured that just meant more spending money for me as well!

Once onboard, our arrival announced by the wonderful CMs, we hightailed it straight for Parrot Cay (I much prefer this to Topsiders for embarkation day lunch). There was a short wait for a table, but nothing too terrible, and soon we were enjoying a nice lunch of salads, pastas, and cold strawberry soup! I went back up to the buffet for dessert and who should I happen to see but Val, our assistant server from our 2010 cruise on the Magic! We loved Val, and I was thrilled to see he was still with the Magic! He quickly remembered who I was, and came back to our table to chat us up a bit. He is now a server, and happened to have the same rotation we had for dinner; alas he would not be our server this cruise. Bright side though, we still saw him often!

I digress. Soon it was time for staterooms to be available. We made a quick stop at Guest Services (where we had a less than magical CM assist us) to make a reservation for me for the Margarita and Tequila tasting. Once that was taken care of, we were on our way up to Deck 7, and our stateroom for the next five nights - 7625! An interjection here - we loved our cabin! It was surprisingly roomy, and even with the single bath, we did not have issues getting ready in the evening. Granted, there were only two of us, but we still found it to be a very comfortable stateroom, and in a superb location! We were just beyond the aft stairs and lifts, exactly two decks below the drink station and Topsiders (and very conveniently located to the secret stairs that lead into Topsiders), and just steps from the secret aft deck on 7. Perfect!

I love the elevator banks on the Magic!

I must have had a drink before taking this picture!
IMG_6090.jpg

I apologize for the disarray - this photo was taken a few days into the cruise, and we were amassing a nice collection of gifts from our gift exchange!
IMG_6229.jpg

One of the things I love about Disney cruises over other lines - all staterooms, all the way down to us lowly standard inside staterooms, have a couch.

It was close to 3:00 p.m., and a meet in the Promenade Lounge with a group of folks on this cruise. There were several first time cruisers in this bunch, which was rather fun! (I love talking cruises, especially Disney cruises, and especially with first time cruisers!) We couldn’t linger long here though as our mandatory muster drill would soon be upon us, and we needed to head to those awful drill conditions...in Animator’s Palate. Yes folks, we had the awful conditions of sitting through our drill in such a cute atmosphere! (Honestly, though...I would prefer to see actual lifeboats available to me! LOL) This painless process was over soon enough, and we were on our merry way to the Sail Away Party, where we found a nice spot on Deck 10 to watch us sail out of the channel and into the Atlantic!

Once safely out on the ocean, we meandered back to the stateroom where I finished unpacking. Our late dinner seating would soon be upon us, and we met our dining team at Parrot Cay. Dervent was our server (he was ok...a bit too earnest, in an insincere way), Jennifer was our assistant server (who we absolutely ADORED), and Sorin was the head server (he ROCKED - the absolute best head server I have ever had the pleasure of knowing on any of my twelve or so cruises on various cruise lines).

We knew coming in, as vegetarians, our dining would be somewhat of a challenge, and night one proved us right. One thing I always do is stick to the menu unless suggestions off-menu are made. Nothing stood out from the main entrees, and Dervent did not have any other suggestions for us; instead I asked if I could have the steamed veggies and baked potato, which come with one of the carnivore (oh, how I miss being one sometimes!) entrees. No problem with that, thankfully. And considering I had my yummy cold mango and papaya soup for an appetizer, and wolfed down a considerable amount of banana bread (and whatever else was served in that basket!) the veggies and potato were more than enough for me. The chocolate s’more cake still held its own with the rest of the meal, but I was pretty stuffed after that, and ready to roll back to our stateroom for a nice, relaxing sleep!

Cold mango and papaya soup - yum!

Yay! Another Magic trip report! We were on the same cruise from April 18th- 24th. Didn't get to stop in Key West due to weather so I am hoping someday they resume that itinerary! We had that same towel animal and thought it was Pluto. Not positive though lol! Looking forward to the rest of your report!

Our first night had been a nice, relaxing, and peaceful evening. I woke up refreshed and ready for the day we were most looking forward to - Key West! As previously mentioned, we booked this particular cruise mainly for the port call on Key West. Since the ship tends to arrive later in the morning, I had a few hours to just enjoy the ship and went out for my morning walk on Deck 4. This is when I discovered my morning walks would become my morning challenges. As I first began, I noticed several people going in the opposite direction of me (ummmm, can they not read the signs which clearly mark the direction for the walking/jogging track). I rounded the forward bend of the ship and came back up the port side, and whoops! The aft bend was roped off! Foiled! And aha! Now I know why so many were going in the opposite direction. They were just turning around and going back the other way. I did the same, and got a few stares from newcomers who probably had the same thoughts I did only moments before. Once I had my mile in, I decided to head up to Topsiders for a bit of breakfast.

Funnel (I can never take too many pictures of the funnels!)
IMG_6093.jpg

I wandered the ship a bit, and saw a few princesses down in the lobby before heading back towards our stateroom. Who should I run into in the hallway but Alice! I have a tendency to see her roaming the halls of the ship alone. She obliged for a self taken picture, which turned out rather blurry!

Soon we were pulling into Key West! I had done a bit of research before we sailed, and discovered we would be docking at Outer Mole, the Navy base pier. At first this was a bit off-putting, but we soon discovered the shuttles taking passengers to the main Key West dock ran continuously, and it did turn out to be a non-issue after all!

Ah! Key West
IMG_6101.jpg

And the reason we had to “park” at Outer Mole...the Majesty of the Seas staked claim first!

About four months prior to our cruise, we decided we would rent a convertible and drive up to Marathon, which would give us the opportunity to drive over the Seven Mile Bridge. Beautiful! We called Tropical Rentals (who we booked our convertible with, as they are the only rental company that rents cars right in downtown Key West - all other rent cars are at the airport - a nice, $35 taxi ride away), and they promptly picked us up at the main port area. Very efficient process!

We had a Sebring (all they rent), which I forgot to take a picture of! The views along the way to Marathon were just gorgeous! I so love driving along the Overseas Highway in the Keys. The water is incredible, and just nature itself is beautiful! Within an hour or so we were at the bridge - woo hoo! Our plan was just to cross and find a place to grab a bite for lunch. We immediately came upon Sunset Grille, and were quite pleased with its location, views, and food. Lunch consisted of a simple grilled cheese and fries, and I had to have a margarita while in the Keys (reminiscent of my Univ of Miami days!). We would have loved to stay awhile longer here, but alas the rental car company closed at 5:00, and we wanted to also catch their last shuttle to the main dock area which would be leaving at 4:00. Needless to say, we made it about 30 seconds to 4:00 and were able to grab the last shuttle back. After a quick stop in CVS to restock bottled water and pick up a few snacks, we were on our way back to the ship.

Loved this row of pastel colored houses!

Getting back early did give us a few minutes to rest up before dinner, which would be in Lumiere’s. Again, we were challenged with the menu before finally deciding on Tomato soup (which was actually pretty good!), mushroom ravioli (gag!) which I did try to eat, but just could not stomach it, before having a few awesome desserts which we split. Creme Brulee, oh my! And Grand Marnier Souffle, oh my oh my!

We rolled ourselves out after dinner and decided to walk it off a bit on Deck 4. Again, I so love the forward bend with the inner workings of the ship available for all to see!

Our evening stroll took us past the ships shops, and had to get a picture of this cute display

Ah, Cindy, you make me miss it so bad! I'm so over this moving mess. Let's do like our sea plane pilot: go on vacation and never go back home again. Lol! That 7 mile bridge looks like a fun drive. I think I could actually stay awake for 7 miles. The 26 mile Lake Pontchartrain Causeway used to always lull me to sleep. The lake water isn't near as pretty. That's worth staying awake for right there! I bet meals would be a challenge for vegetarians in the main dining rooms. If I hadn't had all that beef I think I might have left semi-hungry. Kudos to y'all for sticking with it. :)

I'll try to catch your updates as you post 'em. Moving blows. Totally eats up my Disney web time! Grrrr!!!

I read your report, and was so bummed for you missing Key West. The Wonder will be doing the itinerary, although from Miami. Not my first choice of ports, but I would not pass up a DCL cruise that called on Key West from there. :)

Oh, Pluto! That did not even cross my mind! Probably him! :)

Moving...ugh! The pits. No worries...I'm a little slow on posting updates right now...out of town at a conference (which also blows).

Yeah, it was a challenge to find interesting meals...Palo was faboo (as you will soon find out!)!

I love reading these cruise reports! Gets me more excited for the girls cruise next September! I'll tell ya, before reading these, I NEVER wanted to try a cruise. Ya'll have changed my mind!! :)

The water there is so beautiful! Doesn't seem like something you would see here in the USA. Sort of like it should be some tropical island or something like Castaway Cay! Gorgeous!

LOVE the pool at the restaurant. Such a neat idea! Can't wait to read more!! :)

Oh, you will love cruising!!!

Yeah, I never thought I would see water that color in the U.S. Was so amazed the first time we went snorkeling near Key Largo. And there are just so many of those cool, tiki hut restaurants in the Keys. Just love visiting down there!

Our Day at Sea started like all others - with me taking a walk on Deck 4, challenging as it might be with the whole closed aft section and all. Afterwards I headed up to Topsiders for my routine morning breakfast and just relaxed a bit while doing a bit of people watching. While there seemed to be many things on the Navigator I was truly interested in, this ended up being the day we did the least! The early part of the day was spent giving out gifts to other cruisers in our group, which was quite a relaxing task. There was no need to rush, and I enjoyed looking at others door decorations!

By the time I was finished with this and just basically walking around the ship, it was lunch time. At this point I wish I could remember what we had, but alas it was so unmonumental that I have no recollection of it whatsoever! Could have been the day advertised as an Italian buffet, but was in fact a seafood buffet (gag!). No worries though, as we intended on saving every last bit of stomach room for our dinner at Palo later that evening!

I did manage to find some time to sit in on the DVC presentation. We are definitely thinking of purchasing this some day, although it always seems the Florida resident rates we score make it a much less attractive investment for us. Sadly, I did not win the onboard credit, but I did score a cute reusable bag and nice note pad and cover.

Since dinner was at 6:00 and our Margarita & Tequila tasting was at 4:00, I needed to be sure I was showered and good to go for dinner before the tasting. The rest of my afternoon was pretty much spent just relaxing.

Now, I had been looking forward to the tasting for quite some time as I had yet to do this one. It was to be the highlight of our cruise outside of the ports. My first clue things would not be all they seemed is when I discovered the tasting would be held in Animator’s Palate. Not exactly the lounge atmosphere one hopes to enjoy while partaking of yummy frozen alcoholic beverages! We arrived a few minutes early, and boy was I glad we did. Since I was the only one participating, we found a seat at a table that was not fully set-up for use and had an empty spot with no tasting set-up next to it. As others arrived, it soon became apparent there would not be enough tasting set-ups for everyone. Odd! The three CMs working this were frantically determining who still needed set-ups, who needed tequila shots, who needed a place to sit at even! One was on a phone call with Guest Services, and figured out they overbooked this. Ugh! So the first 20-25 minutes of our tasting was spent with the three CMs taking care of these issues. This left us with 35 minutes to get the entire tasting in, since we needed to vacate AP promptly at 5:00 p.m. for the first dinner seating. One would think at this point they would have sped up the process just a bit, but noooooooooooo! A good 25-30 minutes was spent solely on tequila shots. I am not a fan of tequila (please add mine to the margaritas first!), and this was billed as Margarita & Tequila tasting (not the other way around). By the time we got to the margaritas, we were given two (yes, just two - not my idea of a tasting really) and were pretty much told, “Drink up!” So unimpressed with this, and very disappointed. (I did voice my dissatisfaction with the entire ordeal after we arrived home, as I hope others in the future have a better experience than we did.)

Since we missed our dining rotation in AP (due to Palo), this gave me a chance to take a few pictures

IMG_6237.jpg

IMG_6238.jpg

I did take a sip of each shot considering they were Patron (and I know a few people who would have had my head had I not taken a taste!)

Ready for dinner at Palo (unfortunately my hot pink strappy four-inch sandals - which I managed not to fall in! - are not showing!)

IMG_6256.jpg

What we hoped to be one of the highlights of our cruise, and was in fact THE highlight outside of the ports, was finally upon us - Palo! I so love dinner here. Earlier in the day I requested a table with a booth side to it and was assured our request would be accommodated. Well, it wasn’t. No biggie in the grand scheme of things, and actually it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Our server immediately came over to introduce himself, and it was Sasha! We looked at each other and knew right away this was Sasha - our regular dining server from our first Disney cruise on the Magic back in 2000! How awesome is that?! We started to discuss this with him, and after talking with each other for a few minutes he said, “You had a daughter with you!” He then asked about her and we were just thrilled to pieces we saw him again, as he was our favorite CM from that cruise (and boy did we ever let Disney know then and now what a gem he is!).

Sasha and me

IMG_6269.jpg

After a few moments of visiting, we finally got down to business and placed our orders! As usual, I ordered my glass of champagne here (a Taittinger this time around). First up for eats, of course, was the antipasto dish - with meat removed (as it was noted on our reservation we are vegetarians). The cheese served on this was out of this world, and we really enjoyed starting off dinner! (Oh, and we enjoyed all those yummy bread sticks as well!)

IMG_6263.jpg

Next up was my yummy appetizer, the mozzarella and plum tomato dish! I love this dish each and every time!

IMG_6270.jpg

Now, as I mentioned before, this would be our first time cruising as vegetarians and it did end up being somewhat of a challenge in the regular dining rooms. But not here! Palo did not disappoint, and there were a few selections that caught my eye before we both finally decided on the Potato Gnocchi with gorgonzola sauce. Wow, totally yumola!

IMG_6274.jpg

Sasha also brought out a dish of penne pasta with an incredible tomato sauce, that was not on the menu but the chef insisted we give it a go as well! So thoughtful, and so glad we had this as it was incredible also! There were thin slices of cheese on it that really gave it a final kick!

IMG_6273.jpg

Of course, no dinner at Palo is complete without dessert. I knew right off the bat I wanted the Chocolate Indulgence (my favorite), and we decided to split the Chocolate Souffle as well (which I still think is overrated - good, but overrated). Sasha must have thought we just did not have enough to eat at this point, as he also brought out a Panna Cotta as well (which I also love here).

IMG_6275.jpg

Had to get a close-up of the Indulgence - you can see the Palo inscription on the chocolate wraparound, and I love the thin, curly piece of chocolate on top!

IMG_6276.jpg

Dinner was capped off with a Schiopinnio shot - mmmmmmmmm

IMG_6277.jpg

After dinner, we were going to take a dip in the Quiet Cove pool, but opted against it (I believe it may have been a bit chilly out, but do not remember the exact reason why), so I wandered the ship a bit and took some pictures.

Once again I was awake bright and early and took my morning walk on the modified track of Deck 4 (meaning I walked in the proper direction, counter-clockwise, until I hit the aft bend portside and then turned around when I came upon the rope closing off the aft section). What a total pain! But I was not going to let this deter me from my morning mile walk! Soon enough I was back upstairs at Topsiders, enjoying my breakfast as I watched Nassau becoming clearer on the horizon. As lovely as this scene was, imagine my horror when a small boy tossed his cookies (or whatever he had for breakfast!) right next to my table. Ack! His poor mother had nothing to wipe this up with, so I immediately ran over with the two napkins I had, and helped her cover up the damage as best as we could. CMs surrounded the area immediately, and pretty much helped mom get everything under control. That was it for me for breakfast!

As we pulled closer to Nassau, I spotted the harbor pilot boat and quickly grabbed my camera to get a few shots.

IMG_6306.jpg

IMG_6307.jpg

At this point I decided to walk around the ship a bit and snap a few shots, knowing that the crowds were headed down to the gangway to await our arrival in Nassau. Little did I know there would be NO crowds...anywhere! I mean, have you ever seen the family pool empty?

IMG_6316.jpg

Well, now I have! And if that weren’t enough, the Quiet Cove pool was empty also!

IMG_6319.jpg

There are a few obligatory shots that must be taken as we arrive in Nassau, one being the lighthouse. I just love this!

IMG_6321.jpg

So would love to have this beach in my backyard!

IMG_6322.jpg

As we pulled into port, I could really get a sense of just how windy it was going to be. Hmmmm, maybe it was a good thing I decided to forgo the snorkeling trip. Shopping it is! If you look at the pictures below, you can see the palm trees holding there own against the wind.

So after taking several photos of this, that, and everything else in Nassau, we finally had a docking partner in port, the Carnival Imagination. She pulled in before we were given the all clear to debark the ship.

IMG_6357.jpg

Since my view of downtown Nassau was now effectively being blocked, I decided to meander a bit more and take more pictures!

As usual, the crew pool was empty.

So finally, we heard an announcement that we could get off the ship shortly, so we made our way down to the gangway on Deck 1. There were only a handful of people down there already. A few CMs were even going ashore! (I later asked Jennifer, our assistant server about this...the CMs rotate getting off the ship, or something like that. She had been off in Key West on the cruise just prior to ours.)

Once off the ship, we had our first business to take care of - getting our passports stamped! I do this every time we are in Nassau. If you are unfamiliar where to have this done, once you exit Festival Place (the yellow building you exit the pier from), go left (opposite of the crowds, which are all heading right). There is a chain link fence with military guards at the gate. Just let the guards know you want to get your passport stamp and they will direct you in. Once in the building, you will head right down the hall to the last door on the right. Everyone is always incredibly pleasant here, and this time was no different. The gentleman who stamped our passports asked if this was our first visit. When we told him no, it was about our 10th (at least!) he chuckled and welcomed us back, and thanked us for returning.

IMG_6392.jpg

Once that was taken care of, we just started walking up and down the streets looking for a few things for family back home. Oh, we also located a drug store to purchase stamps, as the post office window in Festival Place was closed (I guess due to it being Saturday). The woman who sold us the stamps was very helpful in determining what stamps we would need to send postcards back to the States. We crossed our fingers it would be enough!

The last order of business before heading back to the ship was buying rum cakes! No trip to Nassau is complete without a visit to the Tortuga Rum Factory! They had samples out as always, but considering I was buying a few bags full of cakes (let’s see, there’s Mom, sisters, Michelle, me, Tina...oy! We like our rum cakes!), we passed on the samples.

By now the Monarch of the Seas was also in port; she had pulled in while we were shopping. Cruisers from her were begin to fill the pier area, so I made a beeline over to the Magic for a few pictures before the crowds were in my way.

IMG_6395.jpg

IMG_6396.jpg

IMG_6402.jpg

With that taken care of, we headed back on board and grabbed a quick bite to eat. Lunch today consisted of cheese pizza, meatless tacos, fries, and whatever other junky food we could find! While grabbing our fast food to go, I snapped the obligatory shot of the Atlantis.

IMG_6418.jpg

Now, for those of you unfamiliar with Royal Caribbean, Monarch of the Seas is the oldest girl in their fleet and she will be leaving the RCI brand next spring. (She will be sailing under the Pullmantar brand, and under a new name.) I am so sad about this, as I have a soft spot for the Sovereign class ships. My first real cruise was on the Sovereign of the Seas, and we have taken many family cruises on both Sovereign and Monarch. While she might not have all the bells and whistles of the newer, high-tech ships, she is a classy lady. Not to mention, Monarch often lands on top of RCI’s customer service list - the staff is second to none (except maybe to Disney, but honestly, they are just as good!).

So with that, here she is...

We were soon making our way out of Nassau, and enjoyed the gorgeous scenery of leaving port.

And yes, one of the Magic’s funnels is a working funnel!

We rested up a bit knowing tonight would be a somewhat late night with the Pirates in the Caribbean Party and all. I really, truly did want to dress up all pirate-y and all...alas, that was not to be. Thankfully, about two weeks before the cruise the Disney outlet in St. Augustine had some awesome pirate tees in stock, and I scored one for $4.99. Go me!

One of the things I was looking forward to tonight was spending dinner in the regular dining room. It seems every cruise prior to this we have either eaten at Palo or in our room on this night. And not only would we be dining in the dining room, but Parrot Cay (which to me just lends itself to the whole Pirates in the Caribbean theme!). Once again we found ourselves challenged with dinner, but were able to still enjoy ourselves. First up for our appetizer was the Pineapple with Toasted Coconut covered Bananas. Yum out! This totally ROCKED! For our main entree we tried the vegetarian selection of barley cakes (I think that’s what they were), which were totally dry and not very tasty at all. No worries though because for dessert we had the ever incredible Rum Barbossa! Chocolate Rum cake, which absolutely ROCKS!

Now, as I mentioned before our head server was fabulous. He totally got people in our area involved in the little show that was put on in the dining room, which included a conga line and limbo line. It was a blast watching so many folks get up and join in on the fun, and the kids especially had a great time!

The party would soon be getting under way, so we took a breather in our room and let the party get started. We have seen it several times already, and much prefer arriving closer to when the fireworks are set to go off. (And we also like heading up to Deck 10, rather than Deck 9...the crowds are a little less, well, crowded!)

One of these days I will remember to change the settings on my camera to the proper fireworks setting. Ugh!

We decided to skip the buffet, as we had enough junk food throughout the course of the day to hold us over until morning! Instead, we headed back inside to our stateroom, where our bed was turned down for the evening, and we were greeted with tonight’s towel animal. Another lights out, and another good night’s sleep before we arrive at Castaway Cay.

Having absolutely no plans for our Castaway Cay day, I was in no hurry to wake up. (I should add here, it was my intention to do the Castaway Cay 5K. Unfortunately I was having horrible knee pain the past few days from my arthritis, which flares up whenever it feels like it.) After getting in my mile walk and grabbing a bit for breakfast, I wandered Deck 10 snapping pictures as we pulled into port, and also getting a few shots around the ship I previously missed.

Castaway Cay awaits our arrival

After the masses had departed the ship, we decided it would be a good time to debark ourselves and enjoy this little slice of paradise. I did have a few postcards to mail, and thankfully had already purchased Bahamian stamps in Nassau since the post office was indeed closed. There is a slot for mail there if your cards are stamped, so no worries mon!

Such a beauty she is!

Next stop would be Serenity Bay, so we hopped the tram and made our way over!

Well, we thought our next stop was going to be Serenity Bay. When we arrived at the tram stop to switch for the SB tram, we noticed the bike rentals were right here and decided it was a perfect day for a bike ride! (And you can’t beat the $6/person rental fee - to this day, the best deal on an “excursion”!) There were just a few people ahead of us renting, and the process was quick and efficient. Many bikes were available and we picked ones to our liking before heading on our way! I love the bike ride along the quiet path, out to the airstrip, and along the way to the lookout tower (which we decided against climbing today). Arriving at Serenity Bay, we asked at the bike rental counter here if we could just return our rentals at this location, or if we needed to take them back to where we picked them up. Again, no worries mon! We could leave them there! Another quick and efficient process!

By the time we made it over to the beach, most of the ideal spots were taken, but we did see a couple leaving and quickly snatched up their now vacated spots under a nice umbrella! It didn’t take me long to hunt down a CM bar server, and I ordered my morning Konk Kooler. “It’s 5 o’clock somewhere!”

IMG_6575.jpg

IMG_6580.jpg

A few sips later, and I was ready to hit the water! I so love it here at Serenity Bay. While the water may be a bit rocky in several places, it is just so crystal clear and serene - nothing like it! There were several fish swimming around, and I was careful not to step on coral or anything spiny! It was so incredibly peaceful out here, and I really felt I was in my happy place. Of course, one cannot become too complacent, otherwise the serene surroundings will undoubtably be disturbed. In my case, by a barracuda! Egads! I started walking quite quickly back to shore (not realizing how far out I had gone at this point), and worked my way as best I could around the rocks in fear I would slip and fall (klutz that I am!). From the shore I could hear, “What’s out there?!? Are you ok?!? What is it?!?” All I could muster was, “Barracuda! Barracuda!” What a sight it must have been! And no, I did not get a picture of it...of course a couple of men on shore had to see this themselves, so as I am frantically making my way back onto land they are all heading out past me. (Insert major eye roll here!) A few chased the now frightened fish away from shore and all had a good chuckle over a cool moment for sure.

Cute fish

Serenity!

Love how clear the water is, so much so that you can take pictures with regular cameras from above the water, not in!

IMG_6608.jpg

Just so beautiful

IMG_6611.jpg

No barracudas near me now!

IMG_6614.jpg

At some point we decided it was time to head back towards the main area of Castaway Cay, and figured we would just grab a bite to eat at Cookies rather than eating at Serenity Bay. We hopped a tram back, and did a little bit of shopping at the Bahamian craft stands. Nothing really stood out, and I left empty-handed yet once again.

Next stop would be lunch, where although it appears we would be challenged here as well for a bite, we both thought the buns being prepared for burgers looked great piled with cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes! We asked for a couple of those (and received a blank stare at first!), and piled a few more veggies on top from the fixin’s bar. There were also a few good salads to choose from, and corn on the cob was the perfect side to all of this! Fruit was plentiful (and good!), and we ended up having a rather pleasant lunch!

We wandered back towards the ship, snapping pictures along the way and doing a bit of shopping in the DCL shacks.

The family beach was sparsely populated. I know we were on a sailing not nearly full, but this is crazy!

I’m sad to say at this point I am not really sure what I did. Obviously I wandered about a bit taking pictures (because that is what I do!). And I was up on Deck 10 as we pulled out of port. There were a few other folks up there, but again the areas were pretty much deserted. I’m sure some of this had to do with people getting ready for dinner, or the show, or packing up since it was our last evening. Whatever the reasons were, I enjoyed the peacefulness as we sailed away.

I can never get too tired of this!

As depressing as it is, I could no longer put off packing up our belongings and getting ready for our last night on the Magic. One of the things I always bring with when traveling is a pop-up hamper. This makes packing a bit easier as I literally dump that thing into one of the empty suitcases! (Shame on me!). We were leaving with a few extra goodies, but I did have an extra bag to use which worked out perfectly. Our assigned luggage tags were Tink, and I was sure to have everything ready to go so when we came back to the room after dinner we could quickly change clothes and pack our dinner wear easily. (And yes, I did remember to keep out a change of clothes for the morning!)

Dinner this evening, which also happened to be Mother’s Day, was in Lumiere’s. Now, I swear the table numbers this evening were not in the same location as our first night in Lumiere’s. I began heading towards what I thought was the table we sat at that first night here, but could clearly see that was not our table number! No soon had we turned around, and Val was standing there ready to take us to our actual table that evening. Now, this is what I love about Disney service and our favorite CMs. While Val was not our server this time around, he remembered us and he remembered where we were sitting during this cruise. Love him to pieces, and I hope Disney knows how awesome he is (yes, I sang his praises in an email sent to DCL when we were back on shore).

This was the night when we realized we could have ordered something off-menu. Of course, it was too late even now to do that. Let me start with saying we had the potato leek soup for an appetizer. So not a fan of this here! It was more leeky than potatoey (are those even words? LOL), and pretty runny. I’m used to potato soup being a bit more thick and hearty. Granted, it was vegetarian, so that’s a plus! I think it was tonight again I ordered steamed veggies and a baked potato, but not certain. When our entrees were served, the table next to us (who also had Dervent as a server) were served stir-fried veggies. What? That was so not on the menu, and I would have loved it. Turns out the two girls at the table did not like anything on the menu so Dervent asked if they would like something along those lines. Ummmm, hello Dervent. You NEVER made another suggestion to us, knowing full well we did not care for several items on the menu. Instead we always made do with what was presented and worked around that. And then get this. One of the girls did not care for the stir-fried veggies, so Dervent says to her, “Let me get you some pasta and tomato sauce.” Are you kidding me? Seriously? Oy, I was miffed. (And I did let DCL know they really should offer a simple pasta dish each evening along with the two non-veggie dishes on that menu, which are chicken and steak I believe.) At this point, it was the last evening, I was finished with dinner, and I just did not care anymore.

The dining team came out to do their show for the last night, with the chefs showcasing Baked Alaska and the servers carrying the flags of all the countries. This is always a nice moment, especially to give these awesome CMs a well-deserved round of applause. (We cheered wildly for Val!)

Once that was taken care of, the ever important dessert was served! We split both Baked Alaska and Chocolate Decadence, which was decadent! I still have no clue what it is in the shot glass served with the cake, but that stuff is incredible!

It was time to pack our final things and head to the ‘Til We Meet Again gathering in the lobby. We arrived just before the start, and left as soon as it was over, so not many pictures of the characters this time. Instead we decided to take one more late evening walk up on Deck 10. Then it was lights out one last time, where we were greeted in our stateroom by our last towel animal of the cruise.

I totally missed this! And I LOVE cruise trip reports! Yours was no exception, Cindy! I loved looking at all your pictures. Palo is absolutely our favorite too. And we love Sasha!! He is so wonderful!

I'm glad you got to catch Key West before the ports change! Especially if you don't want to go out of Miami as much.

Thanks for writing! :)
