One Last Visit to Key West on the Disney Magic

You might wonder why I titled my trip report as such - well, as soon as we heard Disney would be repositioning the older ships to new ports (at least for the foreseeable future), and knowing the new ships are too big to call on Key West, we booked ourselves a nice, little 5-night cruise on the Magic. Considering she just so happens to be our favorite ship, this took a lot of arm twisting. :ROFLOL:

We planned this cruise about a year prior, with our actual sail date being May 4th. Those plans did not hold up (due to a date conflict); we ended up switching to the May 9th sailing about four months prior to the cruise. About a month after that, I found out I would be presenting at a huge conference in Orlando the week we returned, but we were tired of switching dates around and decided we would just hightail it back upon our return to the port. Whew!

So, let’s get underway!

Although we live only 2 1/2 hours from Port Canaveral, we always drive down the night before to make things easy as possible for getting up the morning of the cruise, and boarding the ship. Our spoiled “puppy” (she’s 15 going on 2) was dropped off at WDW’s Best Friends kennel, and we were on our way to the Residence Inn Cocoa Beach. Since we needed to leave from the port ASAP when we returned from the cruise, we decided against the Park and Cruise package, and I scored a decent state government rate instead (when adding that with the $90 port parking price tag, it came fairly close to the park and cruise rate, so it wasn’t too disturbing to pay that port parking fee - although it still makes me want to gag).

Klondike at Best Friends (she had an itchy eye, which is why it looks a bit dark around it)

After an uneventful evening and morning, we headed over to the port somewhere between 11 and 12. Check-in was a breeze, we were given boarding number 3 (due to our early scheduled arrival time of 11:00, even though it was past that), and we headed to the supervisor’s desk just to see what the going rate for an upgrade would be. As tempting as it was to book a one-bedroom suite again, we finally decided against it. All our Disney cruises prior to this have been in balcony staterooms (with the last in a one-bedroom suite), and we promised ourselves we were going to try out an inside stateroom just to see how we would like it. I figured that just meant more spending money for me as well!

Once onboard, our arrival announced by the wonderful CMs, we hightailed it straight for Parrot Cay (I much prefer this to Topsiders for embarkation day lunch). There was a short wait for a table, but nothing too terrible, and soon we were enjoying a nice lunch of salads, pastas, and cold strawberry soup! I went back up to the buffet for dessert and who should I happen to see but Val, our assistant server from our 2010 cruise on the Magic! We loved Val, and I was thrilled to see he was still with the Magic! He quickly remembered who I was, and came back to our table to chat us up a bit. He is now a server, and happened to have the same rotation we had for dinner; alas he would not be our server this cruise. Bright side though, we still saw him often!

I digress. Soon it was time for staterooms to be available. We made a quick stop at Guest Services (where we had a less than magical CM assist us) to make a reservation for me for the Margarita and Tequila tasting. Once that was taken care of, we were on our way up to Deck 7, and our stateroom for the next five nights - 7625! An interjection here - we loved our cabin! It was surprisingly roomy, and even with the single bath, we did not have issues getting ready in the evening. Granted, there were only two of us, but we still found it to be a very comfortable stateroom, and in a superb location! We were just beyond the aft stairs and lifts, exactly two decks below the drink station and Topsiders (and very conveniently located to the secret stairs that lead into Topsiders), and just steps from the secret aft deck on 7. Perfect!

I love the elevator banks on the Magic!

I must have had a drink before taking this picture!

I apologize for the disarray - this photo was taken a few days into the cruise, and we were amassing a nice collection of gifts from our gift exchange!

One of the things I love about Disney cruises over other lines - all staterooms, all the way down to us lowly standard inside staterooms, have a couch.

More than ample closet space...and we used every square inch!

Sadly our wonderful cruise was over. We decided to skip the dining room for breakfast, and instead I ran up to Topsiders to grab some grub for us before we left, which we ate in our stateroom. Based on previous last morning breakfasts in the dining room, I would venture to say Topsiders (or whatever buffet) is the way to go for this final morning. We enjoyed our final meal on board the ship, grabbed our belongings we were carrying off, and headed down to Deck 3.

There was no line to exit, so we were quickly off the ship and downstairs in the terminal where we were greeted by a porter who offered his assistance with our bags. The Tink area had quite a few bags still, but we were able to spot all of ours quite easily, and going through customs was a breeze.

I was going to run ahead and get the car, when our porter offered to walk over to the garage with us! How awesome! He came all the way up to the 3rd floor, where we were parked almost at the other end. We tipped him nicely for his extra effort, and were again quickly out of the lot and on our way to Orlando for my conference. It was a wonderful five days on the Magic, and I look forward to sailing her again (hopefully sooner rather than later!).

Some final thoughts and ramblings...

Stateroom
  • Inquire about stateroom upgrades at check-in. They are usually a pretty good deal. Even though we opted against it, holding to our determination to try an inside stateroom, it was still tempting.
  • If sailing on the Magic or Wonder, consider a room on Deck 7 aft. What a perfect location! The secret aft deck, the secret stairs to Deck 9, easy access to Topsiders and the drink station. Honestly, this location cannot be beat!
  • Rethink the need for an over the door shoe hanger for toiletries. Depending on how much (or how little) you have between your stateroom travelers, this may not be needed. We had a standard inside stateroom without the split bath (two people in our room), and found it was ample space without the shoe hanger.
  • Make use of every nook and cranny. With five checked bags plus two carry-ons (don’t ask!), we still managed to put everything either in drawers or in the closet and were able to story all bags under the bed except for the largest one, which fit perfectly in the closet as well.

Food
  • Hunt for the strawberry soup during the embarkation lunch! It is out of this world good, and the only day I always see it. It’s somewhere - trust me!
  • If you do not see anything to your liking on the menu, ask if something else can be substituted. Whether it be vegetables and/or sides from another dish on the menu, or even a simple pasta dish. The chef can typically do something for you (which we sadly found out too late in our cruise).
  • Go to Palo! Seriously...GO! We prefer dinner, and this cruise was no exception. It’s a wonderful evening between the service, food, and atmosphere. We considered bagging it this cruise, and I am sooooooo glad we did not, and decided to go. Probably our best experience yet!
  • Enjoy the treats in Cove Cafe. They are there to be enjoyed, whether you are purchasing a specialty coffee or not.

Ports
  • I say this in every one of my cruise trip reports, but believe it is worth repeating. Please keep in mind the folks in Nassau (and even some other ports) who are trying to get you to purchase something from them (goods or services) pretty much rely on this as their sole income. By no means are the majority of these folks wealthy, and just think how difficult it is for them to watch ships coming in each and every day, when they most likely will not have the means to cruise themselves. Be kind when turning them down. They will not take it personally.
  • While we are on Nassau, get your passport stamped there!
  • Buy stamps in Nassau to use on postcards being mailed from Castaway Cay, in the event the post office at CC is closed on your day there. They have a slot outside for mail.
  • Rent bikes on Castaway Cay. It’s a great way to see the island, and one of the best deals (or I should say steals) on a cruise at $6. And if you rent bikes and are heading to Serenity Bay, you can return your bike at the rental location there (and vice versa).
  • Enjoy a Konk Kooler at Castaway Cay. “It’s 5 o’clock somewhere!”

This and That
  • Secure an onboard booking for your next cruise! It’s nice to have a discount (currently 10%) in place in case a lower rate does not become available, and having an onboard credit is a great bonus! (I’m looking forward to our sailing on the Fantasy Eastern itinerary!)
  • If staying at the port the night before (which I highly recommend), do the math and determine if a hotel discounted rate plus port parking will work out better than a hotel’s Park and Cruise rate.
  • Take a stroll on Deck 4 and enjoy seeing the inner workings of the ship in the forward section.
  • If time permits, sit in on the DVC presentation. While we are still on the fence about its benefits for us, it still is quite informative and typically a fun atmosphere. In addition you may win a door prize, or even $300 OBC!
  • If you have sailed several times and have seen the shows, opt out of them and take this time to enjoy exploring the ship or even going for a swim! It’s relatively quiet while many folks are in the theatre or dining rooms.
  • Always have a camera handy - you never know who you are going to bump into, or where!

Thank you for following along!

I totally missed this! And I LOVE cruise trip reports! Yours was no exception, Cindy! I loved looking at all your pictures. Palo is absolutely our favorite too. And we love Sasha!! He is so wonderful!

I'm glad you got to catch Key West before the ports change! Especially if you don't want to go out of Miami as much.

Thanks for writing! :)

Thanks for joining in! We were so surprised (pleasantly!) to see Sasha. He was awesome in 2000, and even more so today!

Thank you for a great trip report. I have never cruised but would love to partake in the Disney CL someday. Your tips are appreciated!

The last order of business before heading back to the ship was buying rum cakes! No trip to Nassau is complete without a visit to the Tortuga Rum Factory! They had samples out as always, but considering I was buying a few bags full of cakes (let’s see, there’s Mom, sisters, Michelle, me, Tina...oy! We like our rum cakes!), we passed on the samples.

I still can't thank you enough for picking up those rum cakes for me. You are the sweetest ever. So, the official report on where they ended up is.......**sigh**.......I ate them. Yes. I ate all of them all by myself. Between my sweet tooth and the fact that rum is involved I couldn't not do it. In fact, I sat with a cup of coffee and ate one of them entirely in one sitting. Rum cakes are so yummyyyyyy. My guys who all turn their noses up just don't know what they're missing. LOL! So thank you! And my thundering thighs thank you, too.

Your pic with Sasha, that's our waiter we had in the background! He was so great. I can't remember his name just now. I feel so bad we didn't make it back for dinner. Wish we had.

Loved reading your report, Cindy. Wasn't our cruise the best??? I miss it so much. The move is over but looking at these little apartment walls makes me crave the Keys and the salt air all over again. Thanks so much for writing your report. Definitely brings back grand memories! So, when are we cruising again?????

Too funny about the rum cakes! I still have one left (out of I believe 9 or so). DH likes them, but not as much as me! Mom took two of them (she came to visit the week after we arrived home) - not sure if they made it all the way back to her house or if they were devoured before then. No problem at all picking them up for you - we always leave Tortuga Rum as our last stop as I typically have several bags to carry back from there.

I cannot believe you can pick out your waiter in that picture! Good eye! Dinner was incredible. We really wanted to try the brunch, but wanted to keep Palo dinner for our sea day and having brunch that day as well would have been too much. Since the Fantasy Eastern will be our next sailing, it will be easier to move things around a bit with more days to work with.

Yeah, I agree...we had a great cruise! There's a meet going on for the weekend getaway I am taking in October with one of my BFFs...unfortunately that group is not chatty at all. Definitely no camaraderie and I am totally missing our gathering from May. The cruise we have booked for the 4-night in Sept 2013 (which is the same as your girls getaway) is still in place. Once Becky (who I am sailing with in Oct) decides if she wants to do a girls getaway again after we get onboard, then I will make some decisions. If she does indeed want to do another getaway (next time with a few more people, including her adult daughters) I'm going to push for the one you all are sailing on, and will keep my booking in tact and just change one of the names on it. Will then rebook onboard in October for our Fantasy Eastern. If Becky decides not to do another getaway in 2013 (she may want to wait until 2014), then I will just move that booking. So, to answer your question, other than the getaway this October, I have no clue when we will be cruising again! LOL

So glad your move is finally behind you! Are you settled in? How is Chandler doing?

I know! The cruise group for the 3-day Dream this September is ~dead~. I soooo miss our chatty group.

I hope it works out that you can stay onboard with the girls cruise. If you find that you'll be going let me know and I'll add you to the front page so you're in with the group. If you want, of course! You're totally invited, tho. I may have found ya on the other side but you're here and we're friends so you totally belong with us! K? If Becky doesn't want to go maybe you can find some other gals to jump in with! Would love to see ya again!

Definitely getting settled. Still need to order the new living room furniture. We sold the old stuff to our little Coast Guard tenants who didn't have anything. I don't feel any urgency, tho. It's hard to get that nested feeling in an apartment after spending 4 years in a house we really loved. Tracey keeps asking when I'm gonna fill the bookcases. My response is always, "What's the point? The crap has to be packed again anyway. Leave it in the boxes." See??? My heart just isn't into it. LOL!

Chandler is doing great! He's a little apprehensive with the upcoming doctor's visit (9/20). We did take him to the new doc here at Kelsey-Seybold. They did another ultrasound last month and the nodules are still there. We've been referred to Texas Children's for endocrinology so I truly feel we're in great hands. He doesn't feel bad in any way, he's growing continually, he's healthy, eats good, sleeps good, works hard...it's hard to imagine there's anything that could be wrong. I try not to let my imagination go wild. When the doctor's say it's time to freak out then I'll do my full-fledged flip-out. Until then, I just want to make it official that he's fine. Thanks for still thinking of him, tho. I appreciate that, Cindy! :)

Good to hear about Chandler! I'm sure being close to Texas Children's has got to be a relief...and with Chandler feeling good, it just makes it all the better. I'm guessing if they were concerned about anything, they would have scheduled the visit sooner than 9/20, so I would take that as another good sign. :)

Understandable about the move. I'm not the most joyful person when I have no clue how long I will be somewhere or doing something. I loathe not having a set long-term plan in place!

Thanks for the invite on the girls cruise. We'll see what we can drum up in regards to ours. Becky's oldest daughter is expecting her first baby (the first grandchild for Becky) in March. Her second oldest is getting married in August, 2013. The third oldest will be smack dab in the middle of her BSN program at Indiana University. The youngest (and seventh in line) will be running headstrong into the wonderful elementary school years. On top of all that, Becky and her husband decided to build a new house...they are breaking ground this September, so I imagine move-in will happen next year as well. I'm thinking another getaway will be in order for her at some point just for sanity's sake!
